More black women embrace the beauty of natural hair The Tennessean

Hair is more than hair for Starla Officer. It’s a statement of who she is.

Ten years ago, Officer, now 33, decided to stop using relaxers on her hair and go natural.

After trying transitional styles for 10 months, she went for the Big Chop, often known as the B.C., and started sporting a T.W.A. — a teeny weeny afro. She so adopted the natural hair movement that when her stylist moved, Officer bought the salon. The business eventually closed, but she remains a staunch advocate of natural hair for African-American women and wears hers in locs — a style where the hair “locks” together as it grows.

“I consider hair to be not only personal grooming and maintenance, but personal self,” she said. “It’s also a statement of your identity.”

More African-American women are opting to go natural, with styles ranging from afros of varying lengths to braids to locs to hair straightened with heat rather than sodium hydroxide and other chemicals.

For the previous generation of African-American professional women, relaxed hair was a version of the white soccer mom’s blunt cut.

african braids??

shall i do african braids??i really like it but im afraid that i ll get bord of them guick.....im blond will long hair...everybody says it shoots me....i have an apoitment on friday...

I think your hair probably would not hold up with the african type braids as african hair is normally corser and thicker and blond hair is usually thinner and there are less blond hairs normally on a head than even on a brunnette head of hair. You would probably end up with many split ends and your hair would be damaged later. I bet your blond hair is pretty now.

what kind individuals or cornrows. if individuals please no.

bad idea since caucasian people wash their hair daily the braids would look like crap in a matter of days and you'll be disappointed because braiding takes several hours

The braiding shall take forever and the braids shall be fuzzy in a couple of days.

blonde with braids? sounds ridiculous, besides they could take out a lot of your

idk
blond hair is sweet anyway :)

lol
african braids? never heard it called that before. Well it's up to you sweetie. If that's what you like then get it done but it might not stay in very long. So i suggest instead of making an appointment just get one of your friends to braid your hair really quick. And no..black people aren't the only ones that can braid hair...lol

Does anyone know where to find an African braiding shop in Chicago that braids small and do good work?

looking for a good African braiding shop in Chicago, IL that does good small micro-braids

Personally, I would check Yelp Chicago. They have reviews and listings of shops that do braids. You can search by neighborhood, which makes it so much easier.

search on google, gives you lots of great options!

is there a way to make my hair grow thick enough for african braids?

i have quite thin hair(the hairs themselves, i have a reasonably amount of it though), i really want african braids, but i think that it wouldn't go into enough braids, and it would look kinda stupid on me, is there a way to make my hair grow thicker so that african braids would look good on it?
and its not only that i want reasonably thick braids, i want there to be enough, like i dont want like just ten braids or whatever

Maybe try some of the thickening shampoos and conditioners.

I have thin hair too, I'm African American and have natural hair. Even with my hair texture, my braids turn out skinny.

I've used weave twice to make my braids thicker. They turned out much thicker, but I don't like the way my hair feels when the weave is removed.

Good Luck!

Do any of you ladies know a good hair Salon or a person in Ottawa that do african hair? Exceptional braids?

Whats the difference between micro braids and african braids?

micro braids tend to be very thin and combined almost look like a perm and are straight from the scalp-there are usually a million or zillion of them and they are often referred to as zillions

african braids are thick and lay on the scalp-there are usually no more than 20 braids-they are often referred to as dookie braids

both styles require that packaged hair be used-it is rare for a woman or man to have either of these styles without using additional fake or human hair

i hope this helps you understand

African braids how long should u keep the extentions in?

My friend wants to know cuz she kept them in for 5 months once and it didn't end well. I thought i might ask so i could tell her. she's black by the way.

2 months after that u gon need a perm

for 1 month or 2

she should keep it in for 1-3 months it growes and doent drop out

5 months is way too long it will start to dread and get your hair in knots.....

you should keep them in for 2-3 months no longer

one month, no longer than two. The most important part is taking the braids out correctly so that her hair doesn't come out with them.

For healthy hair she needs to keep them in for only 1-2 months

tell her to check out this website, it has a lot of good information on braids

http://www.growafrohairlong.com/precautions.html

5 to 8 weeks.

It can depend on the type of braid also (micro, kinky, box...etc) but 5 months is usually too long no matter what.

OMG 5months!? As soon as I read that my mouth dropped! lol....Thats really bad... tell her that if she uses synthetic hair she can keep them in for the latest 3months as long as she takes good care of her hair (spraying hair with curl spray, oiling scalp, conditioning...) if she uses the fake hair or whatever I say leave in for about 2 months as long as she takes care of that too.... Also she must remember that skinnier braids need more attention than big braids. She shouldn't have a perm before the braids them and should wait atleast 3days before getting one after she takes her braids down. Hope that helped ! xo

How to dye African braids?

I have African braids with synthetic hair. I was told not to wash my hair because the braids might slip out. I'm using a medicated braid spray to control the itchiness, but now I want to dye my hair to cover the grey. Does anyone know how I can complete the dyeing process when I can't shampoo the dye color out?

please dont' dye because you may not get all the dye out from in between the braid. their is a color hair spray that you can buy and you just spray it in and then when you are ready you can wash it out. or their is a hair pencil and if you don't wanna use that use a eye brow pencil. And because your hair is synthetic and not human yes you can wash it as much as you want. I hope that I have helped you.

There are hair sprays and hair pencils for temporary hair color try one!

um i dunno

There's a great site that sells extension and braid products they also give you advice, I've not heard that before that you cannot wash your hair, I have had braids and extensions for over 15 years and wash them 3 time a week the site is Afrocare.com give it a try .

There is no dye like that. You are going to have to wash your hair. They lied to you also your braids are going fall out anyway from sleeping so why not dye it. I would not recommend to dye it when you have braids in your hair. Wait two weeks after you take your braids out.

how to start individual African braids?

anyone know any websites/video to help me?

How can I find out the cost fo getting African type braids with extention in my hair? In Maylaysa.?

Would like to be able to compare price range in U.K with price in Malaysia as holidaying there shortly, and believe much cheaper overseas.

u can go to a hair salon where they do cornrows (thats wat there called) and ask them.....

Will I get a job if I have african braids in?

Hey I am just wondering if I apply for a job I wouldn't get hired because of my hair. I have heard in many cases where women haven't gotten hired because they refused to change there hair.

If you look nice and neat I don't see a problem.
