Sudanese Women Offer Stories of Resilience Women's eNews

Women have such low status in Sudanese society that I could have filled a book with heartbreaking examples of discrimination. But there comes a point when even the most internationalist and sisterly reader wonders why millions of women in Sudan continue to submit to this treatment.

Many of us understand, on an intellectual level, that from the moment they are born many African girls are programmed to think they are worthless. Many of them are fed less than their brothers and they are kept home from school to work in the fields or assist their mothers with the chores.

In parts of Africa there is a 1-in-7 chance of dying in childbirth; the maternal mortality risk in a developed country like Ireland is one in 44,000. Traditional practices and village-level customs, such as forcing the widows of men who have died of AIDS to marry their brother-in-laws, often add to the spread of HIV and make a mockery of international conventions on the rights of women that may have been signed by the Sudanese government.

Does anyone know any websites that display pictures of african hair braiding styles, preferably flat twists?

I have long hair of my own, however I was interested in going to an African hair braiding shop to get flat twists or goddess braids. I'm wanting something a little different than the normal wrap that I wear because of how long my hair is? Does anyone know any websites with african hair braiding hairstyles?

FOR ANY OF YOU who had african hair braiding like corn rows or what ever?

does it hurt and does it have dandruff unless you use a oil or something to it. Also does it rip your hair like when you take it out what are the RESULTS??

because my mom asked me if i should get it done but i haven't chosen if i should get it or no.

it shouldn't hurt.
if they are pulling to tight then it will.

it damages your hair if they pull it way to much,
and when you take it out.. well it looks wavy? lol

You don't have to oil it but it keeps your scalp soft.
and not flaky

u should get them! it helps ur hair grow more.

ha yes they hurt!
while there being done
i don't get dandruff
and nah it doesn't rip your hair out

It doesn't hurt. And you still take a shower and stuff and I never got dandruff. I think you should. It's awesome then you can leave it in for a couple days and then ur hair is all wavy!!!!!:)

yes it does hurt...well it all depends on your pain tolerence. AS far as your hair breaking off....no it actually helps your hair to grow more but when u take them out yes your hair will b wavy and u will have maybe a few stranges that will come out.(dont worry its just dead hair)

What website can i find african american braiding hair style?

I am trying to get an idea of how i want my hair braided, i am about to have a baby in a few weeks, and to keep the stresses down about my hair, i am trying to braid, and keep it pretty while i am trying to recover;)

you gonna need someone who is experienced doing that. A salon, is going to charge 40 on up depending on how much hair you got to braid.

I told somebody else the same thing.Go to Google,go to images type in African American Braiding Hair Styles. It will show you pics of different ways.

where do you live? i can give you general areas to go to if yorue in nyc area.

What's another name for tree braids? Are there any African hair braiding shops in Chicago that do them?

Tree braids are often called “Invisible Braids” because the actual braid is not readily visible to the eye.

Cornrows?? Idk I have no idea!

i have no clue!
yes, there are a lot of braiding shops around here. Askia African Hair Braiding is on Madison in Oak Park. they're pretty good.

Is there anywhere that I can take african american hair braiding classes in Washington DC?

are you licensed if not then your f'ed you could take classes at a supply house but if your not licensed you cant get in and if you are then you can or you could go and learn in a salon apply to be a shampoo girl if your not licensed...

Don't think so. Salons won't teach you. And most people learn from family, not a teacher. You kinda just watch and learn. Ask an black girl friend of yours to teach you.(Not saying that that's the only race that can braid.) I can tell by your avatar you must like the style.

[african hair braiding] should i straighten my hair before braiding it? please help =]?

i used to have a perm and 3 yrs ago i cut it all off...i ussually straighten my hair w a flat iron before getting it braided cuz it would be manageable, but what i've realized is that right as after the first wash my hair shows through the braids because it gets back to the curly kinky style...so i was wondering if i should leave it kinky and get it braided without straightening it...anybody out there who does or gets african hair braiding done...should i leave my hair as is or straigten it...btw i'm getting senegalese twists tommorrow ....thanks in advance =]
my hair is shoulder length and past shoulder length when straightened

don't straighten your hair first. Get it braided in its natural state because when you put water on it, its going to revert back anyway! So dont even waste the time, your hair will last much longer.

NO! It will break your hair.
BTW, my girlfriend is black

no i dont think you should straiten it if you leave it at your natural straight but of course wash it before you start you hair will be wet and will be easier to braid and and probley would last longer

you shouldnt straighten your hair if its going to show through the braids, but yea don't straighten it then if your hairs naturally curly it'll blend in w/the braids.

you should blow dry it out and then corn roll it with some grease

Getting African hair braiding done is a time consuming process, and it helps if your hair is slightly texturized. Otherwise the process of hiding braiding clients hair adds at least an hour to the braiding time. For Senegalese twists in particular, hiding non-permed hair, or hair that will eventually look natural is a little harder to do, depending on several factors:

Length of your own hair:
If your own hair is very short, most good braiders braid to the end of your hair, then start the Senegalese twists. This process achieves the desired style, and helps to retain that beautify head of twists even after several washes months into the future.

If getting regular braids: (for those who are)
It is important to me as a braider to hide clients hair, whether using synthetic or human hair for braids. Be aware however, that if your hair is not permed, to stay away from Invisible braids, Micro minis, and Medium micros. Invisibles require braiding and leave the rest of your natural hair showing, and for any type of Micro braid style, request the braid to go past your natural hair length. Single braids commonly require braiding well past client hair- no issue with this type of style.

Please note that most other hair braiders make it a prerequisite to braiding unrelaxed hair because it wastes time they could use on another client within the shop working hours and reduces their total daily revenue intake. If you were braiding at Kaales African Hair braiding, for example, you would not need to worry about straightening your hair first. As a Master braider- over 11 years experience working with kinky hair, permed hair, and hair loss clients- I can make you look like a million dollars with a full head of hair or not. We are available by appointment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
