Gout is On the Rise; Massage Can Help Massage Magazine
They experience a gout flare-up." And a leading resource for gout treatments, gout-treatment.net , notes, "Massage and aromatherapy are just two elements of alternative treatment available for gout, and if you are a sufferer, even one who believes firmly in traditional medicine, they are worth considering."
Greater frequency of obesity and hypertension may be associated with the jump in prevalence rates, according to the research.
"We found that the prevalences of gout and hyperuricemia [serum urate level greater than 7.0 mg/dL in men and 5.7 mg/dL in women] continue to be substantial in the U.S. adult population," said Hyon Choi, M.D., professor of medicine in the Section of Rheumatology and the Clinical Epidemiology Unit at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts and senior investigator of the study. "Improvements in managing modifiable risk factors, such as obesity and hypertension, could help prevent further escalation of gout and hyperuricemia among Americans."

Are there any laws/regulations governing the practice of aromatherapy massage in Spain?
What specific qualifications are needed (if any) to practice aromatherapy massage in Spain?
Im currently studying a BSC Degree in Complementary Therapies, specialising in Aromatherapy. Would this be sufficient to set up my own small salon/business and practice aromatherapy?
i think you need a personal massage license which you can get from the government
Can anyone suggest some good books to help with aromatherapy massage?
I am starting college in September and will be doing a course in aromatherapy massage. Could anyone suggest some good overall books that I could buy to help me? Or suggestions on what I could buy to help me with the course.
Thanks
Here are links to the ones I own: (I am studying aromatherapy massage myself but it's just a 10 week taster course; which can lead on to the diploma)

Both are very very good. The second one concentrates on the uses of the oils and how to treat various ailments, it doesn't go into detail about massage technique.
And here is a list someone created of good aromatherapy books for students of any level

I hope you enjoy your course, which qualification is it? I'm thinking of doing the VTCT Diploma.
Also lot's of websites do student aromatherapy starter sets, it would be worth speaking to your tutor beforehand and finding out which oils you will be covering so you know which to buy. They only last around 6 months once you open them so it's best not to go overboard; the tutor should have all the oils there to use if you haven't got them all. Woods and simply supplements are good.
Also buy some small bowls and baby wipes to use on the course. Have fun, if you're anything like me you'll really enjoy it!
Feel free to email me if you want to ask me anything else.

what is a raindrop aromatherapy massage?
I am pretty familiar with different massage techniques, but not sure what this one is. Is it just a regular massage with aroma therapy? I don't think that is anything special. but if there is something different about this treatment I'd love to know, so I can schedule and appointment.
Raindrop therapy is a massage using essential oils. Essential oils are absorbed into the blood stream immediately and are extremely beneficial. The oils are applied along the spine and on the bottoms of the feet. It is wonderfully relaxing and very healing. Try it.
How would you treat a new client using aromatherapy and massage?
The client uses oils at home but they tend to be irritating to her skin. She may also be pregnant.
On advising the client of the contraindications she has since carried out a test and is not pregnant.
Any suggestions as to how i would compose a consultation and treatment plan for her.??
Never, EVER use any essential oils (EO) on pregnant women, not even the so-called "safe" ones like lavender etc. and warn your client against their use at home and until the child is 6 or 7 years old.
Sorry, but that's the way it is.
The long-term effects of EO's has not yet been fully researched. EO's are extremely powerful and act on the hormone system and the nerve system. Some are clearly neurotoxic and abortive, but even the "safe" ones can have long-term adverse effects on the baby.
What is difficult to understand for most people is that when a person develops MS or another neurological disease at the age of 20 or 30, no one thinks of asking if the mother used EO's during the pregnancy or around the baby/child. No one would ever think of linking the two - and yet ... new research is pointing that way, therefore we must exercise all caution until we are sure.
Keep off EO around children (not even burned in a room in the same house) until the age of 6 or 7 when the hormone and nerve systems are better developed and can no longer be damaged.
EO's are very powerful. Cats are very sensitive to them and can die of exposure to some EO's.
EO's in the same room as homeopathic remedies contaminate them and destroy their effect. They are so volatile that they penetrate inside the tube of homeopathics and you might as well throw away the contaminated remedies as they become unsafe.
It's good that this particular client developed a skin irritation to EO's. She may well be saving her baby from neurological damage before it's even born.
You will become one of the best-liked and most successful aromatherapists if you warn pregnant women and women with babies and young children and are able to explain the dangers to them.
Wishing you and your clients all the best!
Question about Personal Care practice (massage, aromatherapy, Reiki, HT, etc)?
As a personal care business (massage, aromatherapy, etc) do you need to have a Fictitious Name registered with the state, occupational license, etc? If I am only taking cash for the exchange of services and I travel to their homes it doesn't seem like I would need to have those things, but I am not sure. Does anyone know? Please advise, I am building a practice and I want to have my ducks in a row so to speak.
Thank you in advance!
To some degree it depends on the state, but in general the answer is no.
I've done business under my own name since 2004. Actually, my name plus "LMT" at the end of it.
Getting a Business Registration has it's advantages. It can make you look like a bigger business, which is a draw for some people. It also lets you open business accounts (a mixed bag - they're more expensive than personal bank accounts). Finally, you can buy products wholesale.
You can do business under your own name for a few years and spend the money to register with the state later.
EDIT - as for being careful, it's always a good idea. Having insurance helps. AMTA, ABMP, and the IMA all provide insurance with their memberships (about $200-265/yr). I like AMTA but I have friends in all three organizations.
Do I need a massage licence in order to practice aromatherapy in ontario?
i want to become a certified aromatologist or aromatherapist but am concerned without a cerificate in massage therapy i wont be able to practice aromatherapy. Is this true or does the cert in aromatherapy cover all? thanks
Hello Bsidebaby,
I would definitely check with your province before you start practicing. You could find yourself in major trouble if you do not double check.
The Power of Alternative Medicines! http://www.doingverywell.com
If you want to do massage and do aromatherapy, you will most likely need a license.
In aesthetic aromatherapy massage would you use any tapotement movement ?
No only in a swedish massage do you use tapotement movement A aromatherapy massage is suppose to be gentle effleurage movements. If you do any hard or fast movements it damages the essential oils and the client does not benefits from the aromatherapy.
Hope that helps you out!

Anyone into aromatherapy massage or someone whose taken such a massage?
Hi. I would like someone who is either a practicing aromatherapist or someone whose taken an aromatherapy massage (full body) to give me some tips.
At the place I live, I don't have aromatherapists. I don't have anybody who'll do it for me. So I am planning to go for a self-massage. I've figured out the composition of my massage oil too.
This is what I want to know:
1) After massaging the entire body with the essential oil blend (in the carrier oil), how long should I let the oils stay on my body before I take a bath?
2) For testing if an essential oil is suitable for my skin, do I put a drop of the pure oil on my skin to see if it irritates or should I mix it in a few drops of base oil and put it on my skin to test?
3) Is there anything that can go wrong by giving a self-massage? Anything in particular that you would want me to make sure?
Your help is appreciated in advance. Thanks a lot.
Giving yourself a massage isn't quite the same as going to get a massage. You won't feel as relaxed.
When testing the oils for suitability for your skin, I would test them with the carrier oil. It's not really necessary for a shower after your massage unless you choose to take one.
An aromatherapist won't be the one to give you a massage as that's not in their scope of practice unless they are also a massage therapist. What you need to look for is a massage therapist who will use aromatherapy. You don't have any spas near you?
My suggestion to you would be to call a couple of local massage therapists and see if maybe they wouldn't mind using your oil blend instead of their usual lubricant for the massage. I've had clients do that before and as long as I know what's in it, I'm usually OK with that.
The AMTA has a locator service that can help you find a qualified therapist near you.
