Businesswoman develops aromatherapy for dogs Chicago Sun-Times
Halloween brings more to neighborhoods than costumed ghouls and goblins. With the constant ding-dong of the doorbell, family dogs often respond with agitation, stress or anxiety. A West Dundee businesswoman has developed an aromatherapeutic blend that she says is designed just for canine calming.
“The symptoms of stress that dogs tend to show are things like scratching, drooling, chewing and panting,” said Vickie Rae Thorne, who has been working with aromatherapy for almost 20 years. “The way canine calm works is it can take the edge off.”
It was a car accident that first led Thorne to seek pain relief. She found aromatherapy beneficial. Then, 12 years ago, when a dog kennel owner approached her about ideas to help calm the canines, Thorne considered ideas. She also founded Earth Heart Inc., which sells aromatherapeutic products.
“Since dogs are scent oriented, I thought it would work,” said Thorne. “With aromatherapy, there is a physiological effect if it is placed on the skin or inhaled.”

How many types of compesses are there in aromatherapy?
I am currently studying aromatherapy, one question on my essay is "How many types of compress are there?" But the only ones i can find are hot, cold and heating. Is this it or am I missing something? Thankyou.
A compress is a very basic form of treatment which entails the folding of a piece of material, bandage or small towel, into a pad by wetting it and applying it to the areas to be treated.
HOT : Hot compresses are used to treat old injuries, muscle pain, rheumatic pain, menstrual cramps, boils, and toothache.
COLD: Cold compresses are used for new sprains, bruising, swelling and inflammation, fever and headaches.
I think your question is as simple as you think, you could go on to explain how to make a hot and cold compress as well as what oils you would use for your choice of application.
Cheers.
What is the difference between edible cooking oils and the carrier oils used in aromatherapy?
I am very interested in experimenting with the carrier oils used in aromatherapy. However, where I come from (Singapore), aromatherapy is not such a big thing and thus their products are quite exorbitantly priced. I was wondering if I could substitute edible oils for the carrier oils (e.g. sunflower oil, sesame oil, olive oil etc.) Has anyone tried before?
Theroretically yes. But most cooking oils are processed to give them a longer shelf life - this is not so good for aromatherapy. That's partly why carrier oils sold for aromatherapy can seem more expensive.
If looking in the cooking oils look for oils which say they are "cold pressed" and/or "virgin" which means the first pressing. Sunflower oil is often processed, so I would be wary of that. Cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil would fit the bill, but can have a strong smell and some aromatherapists dislike it for that reason. If using sesame oil make sure it is not the toasted version often used in cooking. You might want to experiement with mixtures of different oils as they all behave differently and have different aromas.
What is a good company to purchase pure essential oils for aromatherapy?
I want to get into aromatherapy, but do not know what company I can trust to purchase pure essential oils from. I want real quality oils at a inexpensive price if possible. Also, what are good starter oils and what tools do I need? Any input would be very helpful! Thanks!
Wyndmere Natuturals is a good reputable company to buy from. They have individual oils and synergistic blends for different issues.

Lavender, tea tree, chamomile, rosemary, clove, geranium, ylang ylang, neroli, lemon, orange, thyme, sandalwood, juniper, cinnamon, rose and jasmin. The last two are very expensive.
You also need a base oil, olive, sunflower, jojoba, apricot kernal, sweet almond oil.

What aromatherapy oil smells the best to wear as a perfume?
&& Where can i get a list of all the aromatherapy oils & their uses ( not the lists were you have to click on the word because that takes to much time) && describe the smells of your favorite ones C=
thank you
godbless
Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from nature’s herbs and flowers. The aroma is inhaled, or applied to the skin, and each of the oils (or combination thereof) addresses a specific disorder. It appears that the body is able to utilize the healing properties of the oils through the olfactory system of the body, and so initiate the healing process. Aromatherapy practitioners would also have an understanding of the psychological and emotional factors of illness.
This website has some great information and articles about Aromatherapy.

Whats the best aromatherapy essential oil to use for handmade soap?
I was planning on making a small batch. Wondering what other soapers have liked in the way of aromatherapy essential oils (as oppossed to perfume fragrance) oil.
I know a lot of them aren't suitable for handmade soap because of the termperature or expense. I was thinking of orange, patchouli or cedar.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all - be well
Tink
Lavender or sage. Love the orange thought also.
The best perfume for a soap is none. Personally, I want my Chanel No. 5 to smell like Chanel No. 5, not Chanel No. 5 with a whiff of the cheap nasty perfume in the soap I used ten minutes ago.
How to keep aromatherapy pillow scent from fading?
So I learned the basic method for making aromatherapy pillows (rice and essential oils in cloth bag) but I've discovered that the scent is fading after just two or three heat-ups. Is there any way to prevent this? I eventually want to sell these--but obviously it's not smart or good business to sell stuff that won't work after just a few days.
I'm really not sure about how to prevent this since the only downfall of essentail oils (at least in my book) is that the aroma fades.
I've never tried any of these, so I don't know how they'd work, but here are my suggestions:
Add some of the whole herb to the pillows. Add the essential oils to the herb first, and let it sit in a closed container for a few days and then add the rice. I'm not sure how many more heat-ups this would last for, or if there would be some problem with the herbs (mold? although, it's dry so that probably wouldn't be a problem) in the pillow, but if there were herbs inside, this would help "fix" the oils, and also when a person is using the pillow, the herbs would get slightly crushed, releasing their own scent. I use lavender (whole herb, without e.o.s) in mesh bags in my drawers and a little squeeze of the bags helps refresh the scent. The ones I'm using now are about two years old, and they still smell nice, but I'm not using them with heat.
Add orris root powder. Again, you'd add the oils to the powder and let it sit, then add the rice. This is used in potpouri as a fixitive, so it might work for your pillows. It has a slight flowery smell, but you could make it work with your oil blends. You could even try the whole herb, plus the orris root powder with the oils before adding the rice.
Sell your pillows with a little bottle of refresher oil. You can find small vials online. This would work well, but I don't think it would be cost effective for you. I just wanted to add it in as something to think about.
I hope one of those works for you. It makes me really happy to hear about people making natural products and actually caring whether or not they work!
How do you use aromatherapy essential oils?
I see them in shops, read them online etc, but I've never really understood how to use them. Why must you dilute the oils, and with what?
Also, what sort of burner is the best - ceramic or metal ones?
Anyone expert on aromatherapy, or have step by step guides on them - I have yet to find a comprehensive website that isn't trying to market their oils. I just need to know how to use them properly.
Thank you!
The essential oils are very potent and to use them neat on your skin could cause damage. The usual dilution is 6 drops of essential oil to 10 mls of carrier oil. Oils have different properties and should be used for different conditions.
I will have a look around for some decent sites and put them in later....;
What is the brand for Aromatherapy oils?
I buy aromatherapy oils and have bought lots of different brands in the past but they do differ and was wondering which ones you can recommend.
Thanks.
I have used absolute, neals yard and found a good oil from julia lawless. I do aromatherapy massage and get through lot of bottles and always on the look out for good quality oils.
Young Living is the most pure essential oils out there, I highly reccomend them. Everything else is either not distilled in the correct way, not as pure as they say, or aren't the best variety of plant used. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some decent brands out there but Young Living is top of the line. They're 100% therapuetic grade and they don't get any better than this. If you would like more details let me know or just visit their website - www.youngliving.com.au
Aromatherapy Schools
Aromatherapy Schools
The British Versus The French School Of Aromatherapy
You may be surprised to learn that in the world of essential oils there are two aromatherapy schools at war, the British and the French. Both schools of thought have very different views about the use of essential oils in our daily lives.
In the United States, we have for a great majority sided with the British aromatherapy school. We on the other hand, adhere to the French school.
So you might wonder what are the differences?
We want to answer this question for you.
The British Aromatherapy School
The British School of Aromatherapy emphasizes essential oil massage with essential oils that are first diluted in carrier oils in 2 to 5% concentrations and discourages the use of essential oils:
neat – undiluted on the skin
or taken orally.
The British school was developed by aromatherapists from the fragrance industry whose interests were:
in relaxation,
massage,
and emotional aspects.
Essentially, the British are more interested in “aroma” rather than “therapy.”
The British rely on scientific research on animals using oils that are often perfume or food grade and usually applying only certain compounds isolated from essential oils rather than the whole oil. This has led to a host of invalid applications of scientific data to human use of oils.
