Massage makes for happier, healthier, calmer babies Billings Gazette

Soothing massages aren't just for work-weary, stressed-out adults anymore.

Move over Mom and Dad. Make way for Baby.

Hundreds of local parents are getting their infants massages — just for the health of it.

Premature infants who receive massage generally recover faster from health problems, according to "Massage Today" magazine. This is because infant massage can reduce pain in premature babies, decrease stress levels and help them heal faster. It can also help underweight infants gain weight faster by speeding up their gut mobility and making them hungrier.

Research also shows that babies who receive massages sleep better, have a stronger immune system, have fewer digestive problems and are less likely to get sick.

So, once a month, a quiet, after-hours suite of rooms at St. Vincent Healthcare serves as a massage parlor for as many as eight infants who come to get their tummies rubbed, their legs stretched and their muscles toned. It's probably the only one-hour massage session in town where feeding, diapering and crying are welcome.

whut high school courses would help benefit massage therapy ?

Start taking online college courses in business or take an apprenticeship with a bodyworker. Be sure this is a field you want to go into and research your school choices very well.

Well science courses such as:
-Biology
-Chemistry
-Physics
-Anatomy and Physiology

and doing well in all of them.

health because you learn where the pressure points are, volleyball, and cooking and take some spelling what is spell what not whut

Massage School isn't for high school grads. The average age of massage therapist is 45. Most people choose massage as a second career or to supplement their income.

Take science and business classes. Go to college for the same and then if you still want to be a massage therapist go to massage school later.

how cam massage therapy benefit obsessive compulsive disorder?

Massage therapy helps to reduce the physical rigidity of the muscles that OCD suffers tend to have due to their anxiety. When the muscles are relaxed, it helps to reduce people's anxiety levels. The lower one's anxiety, the lower their urgency for compulsions.

It helps to relax you, in hopes of making your obsession less important.

It will help you feel yourself more and help resolve the underlying feelings.

actually yoga will help you better!

In Chinese medicine, OCD is a disorder of the Earth Element. The Earth Element relates to feeling nourished and nurtured. Massage is very nurturing.

Would massage therapy benefit students with behavior problems?

Massage therapy would benefit anyone. The main thing is that you must find a massage therapist willing to work with people without self-control, and they should never be alone with the student.

Depends what you're going to massage.

I think that it would relax them but it is not going to deal with there emotional need.

Yes, massage therapy can clean your inner body making yo feel more relax and less tense....

There's a propability that it will benefit students with behavior problems...

If they have behavioural problems, they most likely won't be able to sit still or concentrate on a massage, if they don't listen or behave in general how will they be a willing participant.

I'm sure it would. It may calm and relax them and if they have a lower attention span it may give them more patience

i think massage therapy would benefit the teachers who have children with behavior problems

As a professional massage therapist, I must say I highly doubt it. I have never heard of this. Behavior problems most of the time have to do with chemical imbalances in the body. Massage would help them relax in the moment but would not be any kind of a cure or multiple sessions would not help. It could help a bit with stress management.

Is massage therapy a covered benefit with insurance plans in Texas?

I am a licensed massage therapist in washington and am considering a move to Austin Texas. I do a lot of insurance benefit massage and am wondering if any major medical benefit plans cover it there.

Nope only WA and FL. Some individual companies may cover it and MVA's should be covered, but not personal health ins.

You'll get to have a totally cash practice!! which is much better than dealing with the low paying insurance companies here in WA.

Massage Therapy: Health benefit or Pamper treatment?

I'm a massage therapist and I'm wanting to know: "If you choose to get a massage, would you get one because it would be a health benefit or a pamper treatment?"

i think it depends on the purpose. If you are having pains or are just very stressed out and tense: health benefit. it can, not only relax your body but ease your mind. However, what is wrong with a little self-pampering every now and then?

A little of column A, a little of column B

Yes.

For me, a massage is both pampering myself as well as providing health benefits.

Why either/or when it can be both/and?

:-)

i don't get them but i feel it's more of a pamper treatment - it feels good.
honestly i would probably get one if i thought it would help me with issues.
ie my left shoulder blade being too high.
but i'm probably not normal.

Mostly a pamper treatment, but I seem to get alot of stiff necks, so it would have some health benefits also. Can I have an appointment?

Hey! I get them for both reasons. And because I have a good friend who gives them to me for free ;)

I'm a Therapist too. My people get them for both reasons, mostly health benefits!!

when i finish up my massage schooling, i am hoping to do both.

i think it is a mix of each. some get it for stress while others get it to help a problem.

Both. I get massages sometimes just because it is nice and other times because I have back and neck pain that need relief. Allsos because I am a Reiki / energy healer and teacher and I think that one in a profession of giving needs to receive regularly to keep balance in life.

I am also a massage therapist, and personally I do it for health reasons. I always use this topic as an ice breaker for my clients, "So what brings you in for your massage today" , that way you know what their motive is.

Different situations require different types of massage. Pain and injuries require a more therapeutic massage. When you are under stress, grieving or emotional distress, so called 'pampering' may be needed - although I really hate the word pampering as it implies that people are helpless and needy at least to me anyways.

Relaxation massage is not pampering - it is a necessity.
Spa massage is not pampering - it is a necessity.
They are needed for different reasons at different times.

Ask your patients and adjust your rates accordingly. Medical massage costs more than pleasure or pampering, unless you are at a spa where the pampering is premium.

I need an articule on how massage therapy benefits clinical depression?

studies/trials are helpful

I hate it when one person dominates a question with cut an paste answers.

Depression

Field, T., Morrow, C., Valdeon, C., Larson, S., Kuhn, C., & Schanberg, S.(1992). Massage reduces depression and anxiety in child and adolescent psychiatric patients. Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 31, 125-131.

METHOD: A 30-minute back massage was given daily for a 5-day period to 52 hospitalized depressed and adjustment disorder children and adolescents. RESULTS: Compared with a control group who viewed relaxing videotapes, the massaged subjects were less depressed and anxious and had lower saliva cortisol levels after the massage. In addition, nurses rated the subjects as being less anxious and more cooperative on the last day of the study, and nighttime sleep increased over this period. Finally, urinary cortisol and norepinephrine levels decreased, but only for the depressed subjects.

Field, T., Grizzle, N., Scafidi, F., & Schanberg, S. (1996). Massage and relaxation therapies' effects on depressed adolescent mothers. Adolescence, 31, 903-911.

METHOD: Thirty-two depressed adolescent mothers received ten 30-minute sessions of massage therapy or relaxation therapy over a five-week period. Subjects were randomly assigned to each group. RESULTS: Although both groups reported lower anxiety following their first and last therapy sessions, only the massage therapy group showed behavioral and stress hormone changes including a decrease in anxious behavior, pulse, and salivary cortisol levels. A decrease in urine cortisol levels suggested lower stress following the five-week period for the massage therapy group.

Glover, V., Onozawa, K., & Hodgkinson, A. (2002). Benefits of infant massage for mothers with postnatal depression. Semin Neonatol. 7, 495-500.

METHOD: Infant massage by the mother has been popular in many cultures, especially in India, and is growing in popularity in the West. Mothers with postnatal depression often have problems interacting with their infants. RESULTS: A small controlled study has shown that attending a massage class can help such mothers relate better to their babies. The mechanisms by which this is achieved are not clear but may include learning to understand their babies' cues and the release of oxytocin.

Onozawa, K., Glover, V., Adams, D., Modi, N., & Kumar, R.C. (2001). Infant massage improves mother-infant interaction for mothers with postnatal depression. Journal of Affective Disorders, 63(1-3).

METHOD: Thirty-four primiparous depressed mothers at 4 weeks postpartum were randomly assigned either to an infant massage class and a support group (massage group) or to a support group (control group). Each group attended five weekly sessions. RESULTS: The depression scores fell in both groups. However, improvement of mother-infant interactions was seen only in the massage group.

Has anyone had actual benefits from massage therapy that last and they can describe for any particular problem

I have an arthritic condition of the vertebra in the neck and now lower back and massage therapy has been recommended by a doctor, but it is very expensive and what is the point anyway? The effects would only be short term if at all, right?

Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time.

The massage will help because it relaxes the tight muscles which will be contributing to the pain you're having. Additionally regular massage will increase the blood supply to the area which will help to carry away the toxins that build up in inflamed areas of the body, keep the muscles soft and supple, and also will have the extra benefits of reducing your levels of stress, your blood pressure which is heightened to varying degrees when you're in pain, and will help you sleep better. I swear by massage but I also know that it can be expensive if you go to someone who charges a lot.

You don't say where you live - have you thought about approaching holistic massage schools (not the beauty ones) to see if their students would like a 'body' to work on - they will be supervised all the time and you will also be looked after by the course tutor so you will be well looked after. Your condition will give them experience and insight into different conditions and ways of massaging, and you won't have to be shelling out for expensive massages week in week out. However I would suggest that you commence treatments with whoever has been recommended to you first, so that they can assess you properly and then start you on the road to a better quality of life.

Good luck - and wishing you well.

why not try aromatherapy massage not only does this give you the benefits of a massage the oils that are prescribed will be specifically for you and your particular ailment, most beauty colleges run very inexpensive treatments by students who are under training and full supervision just ring your local college and they should be able to put you in contact with the appropiate person,my local college used to charge 6 pounds for a full massage including full and detailed consultation

What should I do for career? occupational or massage therapy?

I have a degree in occupational therapy but haven't done that in 6 years. I currently am learning massage therapy and seem to like that. I never did like Occupational Therapy because I could not see how it would benefit people, and feel that it really is rather worthless. I do see that massage therapy greatly helps people physically and relieves stress. The problem is that Occupational Therapy may have more job stability because insurance and medicare pay the bills, and would be easier physically. (more stressful mentally, because of the paperwork.) So, the question is, should I go back and try to do Occupational Therapy for the money and benefits, and less physical stress (working for a company), but feel mental anguish, or should I try and do massage therapy, and possibly tire out physically, but then have the ability to work on my own. Also I am that young anymore, but do not have any retirement pension, and little money saved up. What to do? Please help.

It is really a person decision, but my advice? Stick with OT. I have two more months in my program and then clinicals and I am done. YAY! Why do you find it worthless? What population do you work with? I would find massage therapy monotonous and boring, but with OT you can do anything and it DOES help people if it is done correctly. Maybe you would be interested in hand therapy or something more technical???

What are the benefits of massage on a 9 year old with Down Syndrome?

My son has an opportunity to get 4 free one hour massage therapy sessions from a local 3rd Year College student. He hasn't had baby massage and doesn't seem to enjoy any type of touch....other than sleeping close. As a small child, he enjoyed being held and rocked to sleep. I've heard of benefits of Chiropractic therapy in children but what about massage?

He's 9. If he wants to, give it a try. Stay with him, maybe sit up by his head and hold his hands, reassuring him that you're there for him. If he gets upset and anxious and wants to stop, let him.

Do you ever get massages? It probably will help if you get them and enjoy them. If you're tense about it he will be too.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy

Many people consider massage a luxury, and not something that could be considered a treatment for some medical conditions. However, there are a lot of benefits to this sort of therapy. It is definitely something that would be helpful for most people to do from time to time.

One of the benefits of massage therapy is that it is very relaxing. It can help to reduce stress levels and calm down people that are upset or feeling aggressive. It can also help people that are having trouble sleeping. You can get a massage in a darkened room with nicely scented warm massage oil to really help you relax. Soothing music can also be played. The whole experience contributes to the feeling of relaxation.

Sore muscles can also be helped through massage therapy. Be sure to tell the therapist about any muscles that are sore that you would like worked on so they con concentrate on the areas that need help the most.

When tight muscles are massaged it can help to loosen them up, thus relieving many other types of pain such as headaches.

This type of treatment can also improve your immune system. Studies have shown that after having a massage people have higher white blood cell counts. This means that it can also help people recover from surgery and other illnesses.

Babies many times benefit from massages, and there are lots of resources you can use in order to learn how to give them a simple massage to relax them and help them to feel better when they are fussy. Their digestive process can also be aided through this therapy.

Although it is beneficial in many cases, there are some situations that make it unsafe for you to undergo this treatment. You will want to check with your doctor before you schedule any massage appointments just to make sure that there is no reason you shouldn’t do this.

Heart conditions and problems with blood vessels make it unsafe for you to get a massage. Those who are pregnant should only get this treatment from someone who is qualified to do pregnancy massage since massaging some areas during certain times during the pregnancy can be dangerous. You also don’t want to get a massage in any areas where you have skin conditions.
