Service Review: Massages at Mitchells Salon & Day Spa Cincinnati.com (blog)
The second massage I got was a bamboo massage. This was the one I was afraid of. I had heard of them before, but hadn’t ever ventured out of my comfort zone to get one. But I booked it with my FAVORITE massage therapist EVER (Elana J at the Kenwood Mitchell’s Salon & Spa location). She had helped me last year when I had a bad case of lock jaw. I was apparently grinding my teeth in my sleep, and she helped to loosen my jaw muscles so I could function again (if you know how talkative I am, you know that me having lock jaw was a nightmare!).So, like I said, I felt comfortable with Elana J, and knew she would take care of me. I had some serious knots after the office move and hadn’t been drinking much water. So, my muscles were what she called “crunchy.” I know that sounds gross, but that’s apparently what happens when we don’t eat/drink properly AND we put stress on our muscles.
Having the bamboo rods gave Elana J leverage to work through the crunchy knots (again, gross, I know). The bamboo helped to flush out the muscles, too. Elana J said the bamboo is used to put pressure on trigger points that cleanse and flush out your lymphatic system. That promotes fresh blood flow, which is full of nutrients and oxygen, to help repair and rejuvenate your muscles. This one, I have to say was my favorite. I felt like the bamboo worked through those big knots, and felt the effects of the “flushing” immediately.

What is the difference between a salon and a day spa?
Opening salon/day spa and need to know what constitutes a salon vs. day spa?services provided? I am going to have tanning/hair/mani./pedi.
Salon is for hair and nails... maybe waxing?
A day Spa is for massage and facials that usually require a licensed masseur and esthitician on premises. Not just some random hairdresser moonlighting...
What kind of strategies would you use to market a hair salon & day spa?
If you were given the opportunity to market a hair salon & day spa who has a good reputation in your area, what would you do? Coupons, advertisement, free haircuts or visits to the day spa?
If you already have a good reputation, I wouldn't offer a discount. I feel that discounts and coupons can tend to make places look cheap or desperate. But there are many fun things you can do to attract more clientele, such as:
Create some fun packages/parties:
1. Girls Night In - plan/advertise a ladies night when you will serve wine/cheese, etc to all guests...encourage woman to bring friends and enjoy!
2. Charity night. Team up with a local charity and plan a "charity night" when you will donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity. Make sure that you send out a press release to all media outlets to promote this. Also, you may want to ask the charity to promote it.
3. Fund raising. Seek out local clubs which may be looking for fund raising ideas and offer them a gift certificate fund raiser.
4. Articles. Write an article pertaining to health and beauty. Make sure the last paragraph is "about the author" to ensure that you get your salon's name out there.
I am full of ideas...contact me if you would like more! My website is in the source list. I would be happy to help.
Good luck!
#2 Offer a service or product to make the spa different - Something that NOBODY else in the area offers.
#3 Price the services affordably but NOT too cheap. Determining the target market of a spa, the clientel obviously do not expect to get anything cheap. They will see it as"you get what you pay for"
Is it better to open a new day spa/salon or to purchase an existing spa?
What are the pros and cons to both sides?
As a rule, and exisitng business is less risky to acquire as opposed to a new business. This is because the clientele is already in place and the location has already proven itself. It's nice to think "If I build it they will come", but unless you have a great way to communicate (better and more compeling than your competitiors) that you even exist, you'll have no customers on opening day. And what if your location turns out to be a mistake (next to a cement truck factory, for instance)?
The problem with an existing location is it may carry the stigma of the previous owners. So if you are acquiring the going concern of a successful business that you can make more successful, great, but if not, maybe not so great. You don't want the spa that closed down because of a hepatitis outbreak or the one where some guy died in the hottub.
To purchase and exicting spa, you would have little cost to decorat it how you like it, unless you plan on adding walls and stuff like that, but for the most part, it would be cheaper. One downfall I could see is that the equipment is used, and therefor could break soon after purchase.
The clientele could be a good or bad thing. Good because people will know where you are loacated, just because of the old spa, old habits are hard to break, but could be bad, because you are a new owner, so the regulars might go somewhere else, just because your not the old owner.
What should I call my new mens day spa/salon?
It is located in a city area, and I would like a one word name that is fresh and modern.
How about:
"Guy"
"Racer"
"Male"
"Club"
"Alpha"
"Chief"
"Stud"
Hope these help.
amadeus
Menly

seems to me a lot of men would resist the "day spa" concept so you have to make it seem masculine to go and have their nails done or facials or whatever. A sports theme would make it more acceptable, just like it's OK for men to pat other men on the rear in an athletic context.
Just for Men
Mack n' Me
Men Only spa
Men to the Max spa and salon
Salon for Men
Groovy Guys
Queer Eye for the Spa Guys
Mascu-Lane
Picasso
Mr
Hombre
Senor
Spa-dres
Menders
G'eye
M'Ail
Man-hatten
What can I call my new Men's day spa/ salon?

how about "modern"or "new man"? I always wonder too what I would call my own spa but i am not in that position yet. well, that's all I could think of.. sorry but good luck!
Day Spa and Salon Equipment Leasing?
I am needing to lease equipment for a day spa and salon, but most of the ones I've seen on the web indicate you already need to be in business. I want to know that I can secure financing for this BEFORE I sign the lease. If anyone knows where this can be accomplished, please let me know as I want to get moving on this.
If you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a day spa and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

and read some of the articles especially the ones about a business plan and starting a business.
Option 2, get a equity line of credit from your bank. Also. some bank will do equipment lease too such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo Bank.
Basically, you will need to have a business location. A lot of the companies will give you an estimate before you start.
Day Spa and Salon Business for Oklahoma?
Can someone tell me a website to go to or what all forms are required to open a small business of a day spa and salon in the State of Oklahoma?
Here is where you go to register your business. http://www.sos.state.ok.us/business/business_filing.htm

My fiancee' gave me $150 for a "day spa/salon" for my birthday. I have never gone to one of these places.
I can even have laser hair removal done if I choose to do so. Anyone ever go to one of these places? what should I get done? I'm having trouble deciding...anyone have any tips?
$150 won't come even close to paying for laser hair removal. That amount isn't much at any better salon, so you may end up only getting a massage.
What industry group does salon/day spa fall under?
Opening salon, need to find out what industry and market its in.
The service industry
How do salon and day spa managers get paid? How much?
I have worked at the same salon now for 6 years and might be taking on a manager position. I currently get paid commison of 55% on services and 20% on retail. I have 88 Hrs of paid vacation time and 8 days of non paid sick/personal time. I get $12 an hr for vacation/meetings or I get paid that if were not busy enough to make commission. How should I figure what I want to get paid and how?
Hi: I just finished a course on spa finance and learned that day spa managers make on average between $30 - 50,000 a year with a bonus on the gross revenue on average 15% plus benefits. It definitely varies depending on where you live though, a bigger city will pay more.
If I were you, I'd call up some other local salons that are comparable in size to yours and ask what a manager earns. . . just say you're doing a research project. . . which you are! Good luck, Candace
