An Esthetician with a Customer-centric Focus SkinInc.com

The love of skin care has been present in Megan Burton since she began getting facials at 15. After graduating from high school and trying out college to appease her parents, Burton finally convinced them that her true career path was in skin care. “I was going to do the full cosmetology program, but my teacher talked me into specializing in one field and that’s when I got started in skin care,” she explains. Burton graduated from Class Act in Joplin, Missouri, in 1998, and immediately made the decision to move to Kansas City, Missouri, where she started working at an Aveda spa. “That was the best thing I ever did because it provided me with an opportunity to become more educated and taught me to make skin care a whole-body experience, and I continue do this with my clients,” she says.

After putting in four years at the spa, Burton decided to move back to her hometown of Springfield, Missouri, where she married her high school sweetheart. “We wanted to be close to family,” explains Burton, who loves her Kansas City clientele so much that she still returns regularly for three-day stints, where she completes between 28–30 facials during that time while sharing a room at Aspen Salon and Spa with another skin care professional. Along with this, Burton also works as the lead esthetician at Long Acupuncture & Skin Rituals Spa in Springfield, which opened in 2009. “It’s a very relaxing atmosphere and a very successful business. I am booked three to four weeks out,” she says. The spa works with the Edge Systems HydraFacial machine, offers PCA Skin peels and its main product and back bar line is Éminence Organic Skin Care.

How To Become an Esthetician

Estheticians (sometimes spelled Aestheticians) are licensed Skin Care Specialists who treat the facial skin to maintain and improve its appearance ...

Esthetician?

I am going to be starting school in Jan (going back) for Esthetics (skin care) and I was just curious if there is anyone here that is and Esthetician and what your view on you job is and things of that sort.

ive been a licensed esthetician for 2 years now in the milwaukee area...to be honest with you here its hard to find a good job for this field..there are so many estheticians here..and so many doctors offices and the medical side they all want people with experience..im currently working for aveda..but i am curenly looking.. he job is fun but i wish i wouldve looked at the big picture.. i prob wont be doing this for my career.. look into destination spas ..my best advice ask around ..call spas..also in every state the hours are different..so if you moved you would have to take the whole course over again..which i didnt know..and also you would have to take the boards over..hope this helped

How can I become a paramedical esthetician in Kentucky?

I know it takes a 1000 hour course to become a esthetician but how do I become a paramedical esthetician? Thanks.

go to http://www.naccas.org/schools/new/accred... to find accrediated schools. Call them and see if they offer esthetics. If you want to do medical esthetics, then you will need alot of training post graduation. Advanced courses in microdermabrasion, chemical peels, skin analysis, business skills. Sites that offer advanced training is:
www.victoriarayner.com
www.medical-esthetics.com
www.theinstituteofadvancedmedicalesthe...
www.gracemedicalequipment.com/edu.htm
http://www.imajschool.org/
http://www.nationallaserinstitute.com
http://www.laser-school.com/
salary varies depending on the setting and what procedures you do.. I would also look into laser training.. i listen ones i believe to be the best and most cutting edge. Laser training is fairly expensive, but it makes you highly marketable... And if you are getting paid on comission -you charge lot more for laser tx- sometimes your employer will pay portion or all of laser training for you.
I would also look into perm make up and electrolysis...
For perm make up go to micropigmentation.org and go under the training section to find certified instructors. I would only do perm make up training under them..they are like the "american society of plastic surgery" for micropig.

Where can you find esthetician supplies online?

I have a new spa and we are adding an esthetician very soon. Need information on supplies needed and where to find them.

Supplies needed will be based on the services you plan to offer and the qualifications of the aesthetician. I would contact a school that has the program and inquire about the equipment they use.

How do you become a medical esthetician?

I have my esthetician license in CA and want ot become employed at a Medical Spa but I am finding it very difficult to get hired because i dont have the medical backround. What extra education do i need? Is it worth it?

Take a medical terminology course and make sure you get a microdermabrasion certificate...these are pretty much mandatory for a Physician's office or medspa. Also, what I have learned is don't randomly fax your resume to prospective employers...show up in person, dressed professionally. As you know, physical attractiveness and good skin are very important in this industry. It's very easy to toss a resume in the trash, but if they see you and like how you look and present yourself, you have a better chance of getting a job. Good Luck!

talk to a counselor at your community college.

Best way to start out as a newly graduated esthetician?

I just got my esthetics license and I would like to know if anyone has any advice on the best way to start out as an esthetician. I am worried about renting from a salon with no clientele, would I be able to pay my rent. If anyone has advice on the best way to start out as a new esthetician with few clients please let me know. Thanks.

Try starting out somewhere like American Laser Center or Sleek Medspa depending on where you live. Both of these companies have a high turnover rate because the estheticians are always very busy and work very hard. If you find a spa that has multiple locations usually they will have a large clientele and do not require you to bring in clients. A large company is good to start out even though it is not a good place to stay long term (very sales oriented). From there you can find a job almost anywhere because big companies try to have to most up and coming treatments, you will be ahead of the game.

Good Luck and I hope you love the industry when you get out there.

How many days a week does an esthetician work?

I just wanted to know how many days a week an esthetician works and how many hours?

Well I work at a spa, and the estheticians I work with are paid on a commission base. So they kinda get to make their own schedule. Some work like 40 hours a week like a regular job and some only come in like 2 days a week. So it can be up to you depending on the company you work for.

what is the tool that an esthetician uses to do the extractions with?

I went for a facial, and I don't know why I didn't ask, but what are the tools they use for extractions? Can I buy them? I did buy a round blackhead remover, but I can't imagine that would be the same thing. What the esthetician used felt like a needle and it worked great, unlike that cheap thing I bought.

It is called "skincare tool" by tweezerman, and it really does feel like a needle, but it is really just this tool. Buy one, and use the loop side. After you get used to it you'll start to feel the same feeling your esthetician has.

Go to Tweezerman.com, that is where I got mine. It's the best one I have ever used! It's only about $10.

Is being an esthetician a good way to support yourself through college?

I'm studying for my bachelor's, but esthetician training takes 5-6 months in my state, so I thought I'd try doing that while supporting my way through college.

Yeah it is. Keep in mind, that is 5-6 months of full time study so you won't time or energy most likely to study the other courses you will be taking. Not to mention, the times of day the classes are held may not be compatible with each other.

How long dose it take to receive esthetician License after you sent in the paper work?

I graduated from an esthetician school in December 2008. I sent in my papers to the Board of barber and cosmetology examiners. And I was wondering if anyone know how long it takes to receive your license in Minnesota in the mail?

Good luck with that. I graduated the same month and year as you and I have still not received my temporary license. Ridiculous when you pay for the license and they still dont send it to you. I'm in NJ btw - in my state they have 120 days to contact me for the State Board.

Do you have to be an Esthetician to perform laser hair removal?

I am looking into laser hair removal(so cal) And I was told that you have to be a licesned Esthetician to do this.

In some states you can be an esthetician and perform laser hair removal. but in California you have to be a R.N to run a laser. I work at a medi-spa and they are all nurses. if you want to learn electrolysis you can do that with your esthetics's license.
