How to write shell extension for displaying images in custom file types?

I wrote a new kind of image file, it's not a serialized image, but an actual binary layout. It's not a wrapper around an existing image type either, like PNG or BMP, so Windows doesn't know how to display it. How would I go about writing a shell extension (preferably in C#, but C++ is ok) to create a thumbnail to show the image contained in the file?

What causes pain and reduced extension of the wrist?

There is no swelling, redness or trauma. Pain occurs when lifting things up, or holding things in a certain way. The pain is remitting and relapsing. Extension is considerably reduced compared to the other wrist. The sufferer has a desk-based job.

Sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome or something like that - maybe a repetitive strain injury. Get it checked out by Company health officer or see your Doctor.

Masterbaiting too much underneath the desk. I would suggest taking it easy and using the other wrist.

It could be a number of things, and requires professional diagnosis. However, at the simplest it could be RSI, at the worst rheumatoid arthritis. If it is the hand which uses the mouse at a computer, then it probably is RSI. This can be helped by strapping the wrist when using the computer, but I cannot stress enough that it needs a doctor to tell exactly what is wrong.

The correct medical term for it is: Tenosynivitis - and yes you need medical treatment for it - because it could become permanently damaged.

Headphone extension so I can listen to music on the computer?

My computer's hard drive is on the floor and many times I want to listen to music on the computer. However, the headphone cord isn't long enough. Is there a type of headphone that has a longer cord or a way to connect using an extension cord?
Names of headphone brands are appreciated. Thanks!

You can get "3.5mm Mini Plug extension cord" for a few buck in any local RadioShack, electronicsstore or on the net.
Here is one for $3.

http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-3-5mm-Mini-Audio-Cable/dp/B000BSN90O

I had the same problem...went to a RadioShak store and got an extension made just for this situation. It had a plug in hole at one end and a plugger-in thing at the other, so you can attach it to your existing headphone cord and not have to lie on the floor to listen to tunes!

i agree with the person above me,
also, you can get headphones with a long cord, which radio shack carries, also. :]

...also don't forget that wireless headphones exist too. They look like a thin pyramid which is a radio transmitter and are matched to headphones with a radio receiver, but no cord. You could try that too and be free to move around.

Can you use an extension cord for a refrigerator?

I need to know if it is safe to use an extension cord on a refrigerator? Not a regular extension cord but a cord made for appliances.

Yes you can use a cord made for appliances as long as it is heavy enough. I would look for at least a 12 guage wire size if not a 10 guage. These are a fairly large wire size but the cost will be cheap as opposed to what can happen if you use a smaller cable.
The 12 ga should be good for 20 amps while the 10 ga should handle 30 amps.
Some may say you can use a 14 guage that is good for 15 amps but the price difference is not that much for a little peace of mind. Make sure you get one that has only one female plug on the end that way you will not be tempted to plug something else in with it.

Hi as long as you get one that is grounded & made for large appliances, I do not see why not.

Yes you can without any problems as long as it's an extension cord designed to carry enough amps.

Another idea is to make sure it is not too long or curled up.

Yes you can use an appliance cord for your fridge, just make sure it has a ground and the proper amperage capabilities.

Can i wire lgiht sockets to an extension cord?

I was gathering information on how to build a reptile cage, and one of the obsticals would be lights/heat. Would i be able to wire a light socket or 2 to my cage using an extension cord as a sourse of power. I am planning on cutting the extension cord and then after wiring in the light sockets, planning on connecting the positive and negative ends to the extension cords and securing it with electrical tape. Would this be a bad idea? I cant find any information on how to wire 2 light sockets using a plug in type of method. Before you all think im crazy, i have a heat lamp for my reptile alright and it basically looks like a socket, with a metal dome over it and a cord running into the electrical socket. There doesnt seem to be any device but the socket regulating the flow of electricity so i thought i could do the same.
Well the thing is its going to be a custom cage. i cant have the huge domes sticking outside the cage. i have found light sockets that are safe for the cage im going to build. My only problem is it doesnt come with a way to just plug into an outlet. I would just like to know how i can wire it to use it to plug into a wall or something. The sockets do not come with plugs to were i can plug into a wall or surge protector. Its not the couple of bucks savings part that im concerned with, its the whole DIY. I have seen alot of reptile dealers and petstores with similar set ups, the thing is when i ask the floor people dont know the set up

The heat lamp example you use is great as long as you realize they are using materials properly sized and rated for the electrical current draw and high temperature that heat lamps can generate. The wrong type and an incorrectly sized cord can melt and burn or be a shock hazard. Additionally, you need to be careful about how the lamps are mounted to make sure they don't catch fire. Electrical tape all by itself for connections would not be wise. As a minimum you would want to use twist-on wire nuts, but better would be to buy ceramic light sockets at the hardware store that have screw terminals. You also need to make sure the lamps are adequately protected/covered so your reptiles don't climb into them and get fried.

Your idea may save some money over buying a light fixture made for reptile cages, but if it kills your reptiles, kills you or burns down your house then the savings aren't worth it.

You might want to talk to a pet shop or reptile dealer and see if they have any used equipment that you can buy cheap or even for free and then clean it up for your use. If you are near a large city then check out the classifieds for used equipment.

If you still want to build your own stuff then this site has a set of e-books for building reptile cages and lots of accessories for about $28, http://www.reptile-cage-plans.com/index.html

I have a box turtle all of her lighting/heating fixtures are plugged into a surge surpressor. This is the safest way.

i agree with susan... and if you don't want a surge protector three-way extension cords are available that you can use. i don't understand what's different about plugging into a socket or the end of a cord?

Home Depot sells these nifty little male-plug to lamp socket adapters. I would think a few small brown extension cords and handful of those adapters and you got it made.

Why would you put yourself, your home and family, and your pets at risk just to save a few bucks? Don't mess with it. Go purchase what you need to maintain a healthy environment for your animals.

Can you. Yes. Should you. No. Light fixtures and all other electrical equipment is tested by a listing agency such as UL to make sure they won't electrocute you or burn your house down. If your home made fixtures burn your house down do you think your insurance will cover it? Look for ready made fixtures that will fit your needs. Do a search.

How long does an extension have to be up before planning permission is no longer required?

I have 2 extensions on my house. One extension had planning permission but the much smaller one did not - the previous owners put it up. I am now selling up and am worried if this will be an issue with the new buyers. I think it has been up for around 6 years.

It won't come up unless you bring it up. So don't bring it up. It obviously wasn't an issue when you bought the house and won't be an issue when you sell.

Technically it will be in violation as long as it stands. If anyone should ask, say it was done before I bought the house, so I don't know the history of it.

How to make your own extension cords?

We need extension cords here and there around our home, but they always come in specific lengths that are almost always way longer than what we need. How easy is it to make extension cords yourself. Can I buy the parts and custom make the exact lengths I need? How easy is it?

You can buy the parts and make up your own extension cords. But be aware that extension cords are a leading cause of home fires. The electric code thus states that "extension cords are not to be used in place of permanent building wiring." What that means is, they are fine to run a drill or a trouble light, but not to be used permanently or for long periods of time to power things that should actually be plugged into a receptacle in the wall. If you need a receptacle somewhere, have one installed. That is much cheaper than a fire.

Ask a handyman at your local hardware store.

It would be safer if you had an electrician come out and put new outlets in the areas that you need them.

Otherwise, you can buy cord by the foot and different plugs to tie in at the home improvement store. Make sure you get the correct gauge for what you are planning on using it for.

It is not a safe idea at all to make your own extension cords unless you want to risk becoming a crispy critter....I suggest you check out a home depot or something and see if they have a good selection or possible to have them special order the size you would like.

It is usually cheaper to buy an extension cord and shorten it or even make 2 out of one. You can cut it in half or any length you want. Buy the replacement plug to put on the end that has a outlet socket but no plug. They may also have replacement outlet sockets...but more than likely you will have to buy the whole plug box and electric outlet...which is big and ugly. Usually if I need a short extension..I go to the 'Dollar Only ' store and but their electric extensions...then go to the hardware store and buy the replacement plug. Measure back from outlet and cut off the plug part. Replace the plug on this shorter wire. If the plug part of the wire is over 3 feet long....keep it around. You can always use it to replace a bad wire on one of your lamps.

It is very easy. What I've done is buy long lengths of extension cords 100' with male and female ends, and cut them and add new ends. Then I have a 100', 75', 25', and two 50' lengths. Also have several short 15'.

But that is for construction. If you need them for household purposes, then you need the receptacles properly spaced. There is a reason that code requires receptacles every 12' I'm no electrician, but I think that is right, basically. I know there's a bit more to it than just that. Anyway, the code is so people don't run unneeded extension cords, a fire hazard. If that is the purpose, then you need to get a licensed electrician to place the extra receptacles where you need them. Otherwise you are playing with fire, literally.

Listen to John - he is absolutely right in every way!

How do I price an extension to my house?

I'm thinking of adding an extension to my house. Before I do I need to get a guesstimate of the cost. Does anyone know the price per square foot I need to work on for a block and render extension?

The best figure i can give you to work from is £1200 to £1500 per square meter. This covers digging out and pouring new foundations, oversite, raising walls, roof on, and plastering. Electrics and plumbing are extra, depending on taste.
It is known as the square foot super.

Where you live greatly varies the cost. Most reputable contractors will come out and give you a written estimate at no charge. Which will give you a much better idea of the cost. If there is a delay in starting the project remember material cost can go up in that time. It's always better to figure a larger amount than the estimate as there are almost always surprises. Make sure you use a reputable contractor, check references and licenses.

Eermm why dont you ring builders who offer free quotes?

Depends on geographical location and site access.
And of course complexity; single/double storey, and degree of 'finish' required.

Contact a local builder.

Hey Superman,
Call some architects and general contractors. Explain to them that you need some ideas for your addition, and would they be willing to give you a bid. Most will at least tell you what to expect to pay per square foot in your area. You may just find the person you want to do the work, and get some input for your ideas as well.

Depends on what materials you want your extension built
from, stone brick, wood, thatch and many other materials
the cost can vary greatly.Best get a free estimate from
various reputable builders.

depends on what you put into it ..such as is it a pitched roof?..heating ..wiring .any sanitary ware etc ..you will pay minimum of £60 per square foot .up to a max of £100 per square foot ..plus vat drawings ..building control fees ..it does add up !

Does an extension impact how quickly you receive a tax refund?

I filed a 6 month extension for my 2007 taxes, and then 2 weeks later on April 30, I filed my 2007 tax return. It's been 6 weeks, and no status from IRS website, so I called up and they said that it hasn't even been proceesed yet because I filed an extension. I've never heard of an extension impacting a refund...is this correct? any advice on how to get my refund processed quicker?

It depends on how busy they are. I routinely get an extension every year and file near the October deadline. Any minuscule refunds I have gotten were paid in three weeks or so. Your situation probably has more to do with you being in the logjam of last-minute filers than anything to do with filing for an extension.

Is the Unemployment Extension only for those whose Unemployment benefits have already been used up?

I still collect Unemployment benefits, as my balance has not been totally used up. Am I also going to get a 13-week extension added to my current balance?

yes you will
