Roller derby: This is serious Philadelphia Inquirer
Patty Curran put it bluntly: The 44-year-old from the Jersey Shore, a tiny woman with a thin, muscled build and black hair in braids, wants to roller derby with the Philly Roller Girls. No matter what it takes.
"I'd do anything to make this league. Literally," she said, no trace of a smile on her lips. "This is huge."
To prepare for the big event, Curran had spent two years playing with a smaller league in central Jersey under the name "Redneck Roller," a shout-out to her Florida roots. She more recently added weightlifting and speed-skating drills to her workouts.
She's the mother of four, grandmother of one, but no one would know that to see her rock around the rink on old-fashioned four-wheeled skates. She bodychecks as hard as anyone, yet she has a near-perfect French manicure. Her 7-year-old son wore a "My Mom skates faster than your Mom" T-shirt.
Curran looked at the current team of Roller Girls with awe and respect.

Some of the blog buddies asked about my nails, so I thought I'd show how I give myself a French manicure. By no means am I a professional ...

French Manicure?
I can never get the white tips straight when I do an at-home french manicure. Any suggestions?
Try masking tape! Seriously, let the top coat dry well so it doesn't get tacky, but masking tape will peel off easily and you'll get that straight line! Don't forget the coat over that one :)
Wait till paint dries, then remove the tape.
And there .
;]
Apply polish as normal, and remove the tape while it's still wet so you don't leave a little ridge. Then when the ends are dry finish with your top coat.
Never fails.
How do people do French Manicure at home?
How do people do french manicure at home and i mean the ones with the white tips, I want to know because i dont want to always pay to do my nails and when i try using white nailpolish on my nail tips they always smedge or somthing. Is there any ways i can do french manicure without skrewing it up at, other than geting them done?
Getting a Perfect 10
If you're never quite happy with your at-home manicure, don't blame your skills with the brush. The condition of your nails and cuticles makes all the difference. The most common manicure mistakes to avoid are:
Mistake 1:
Filing nails in the wrong direction. Sawing back and forth with your emery board and going too deep into the corners can split and weaken nails. The fix: Holding a fine emery board at a slight angle to the nail, file from left corner to center for a few strokes, then from right corner to center. Smooth with a fine metal file.
Mistake 2:
Neglecting cuticles. Rough, ragged cuticles can lead to painful hangnails. The fix: Brush cuticles with a rich oil after your morning shower and before bed. Let oil soak in for a minute or two, then rub into cuticle. "Oil penetrates better than hand cream," says Viner.
Mistake 3:
Cutting cuticles. Nipping away at your cuticles invites the risk of infection. (Your cuticles act as a barrier against bacteria.) The fix: In the shower, gently push back cuticles with a washcloth (the steamy water helps soften them).
Mistake 4:
Skipping base coat. Polish on bare nails can dry out the nail plate; and without a base coat, dark shades can stain nails or leave them yellow. The fix: Brush a moisturizing base coat on clean, dry nails; let the base coat dry for a few seconds before applying polish.
Mistake 5:
Leaving polish on too long. This, as well as too many layers of polish, dehydrates nails. And once polish begins to chip, it can peel away a superficial layer of the nail, too. The fix: Remove polish after five days; wash hands to rinse away remover, which can also be drying.
Do-It-Yourself Nails
8 tips for a flawless manicure.
Tip 1:
Check your polish. Old polish can become clumpy and thick, causing uneven application and bubbles. If your polish has become thick, add a few drops of polish thinner to the bottle and shake well. (Note: Don't use nail polish remover to do this!) Or treat yourself to a new bottle.
Tip 2:
Start with clean nails. If yours have traces of lotion or cuticle oil on them, polish won't stick evenly and will chip more readily. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or nail polish remover to clean the surface of nails before you paint.
Tip 3:
Begin with a base coat. A base coat smoothes out nail ridges, and allows polish to go on more evenly. A base coat also protects nails from becoming stained when you wear dark polish.
Tip 4:
Watch your brush. As you remove your brush from the bottle, carefully wipe one side of the brush along the bottle's neck. This removes excess, bubble-producing nailcolor.
Tip 5:
Apply in minimal sweeps. Apply color from cuticles to tips in three swipes: One in the middle, and one on either side of the nail. You may need to use more strokes, but keep in mind that the fewer sweeps of color, the more even the result.
Tip 6:
Clean up as you go. It's inevitable that you'll wind up with some polish on the skin around your nails. Use a wooden nail stick to quickly swipe away the excess as you go.
Tip 7:
Finish it off with a top coat. A top coat seals the polish onto your nails and gives a high-shine finish (which can camouflage streaks or small bubbles).
Tip 8:
Allow ample drying time. Set aside at least an hour of hands-off time for nails to dry. And remember that while they may feel dry to the touch after that time, nails can still be tacky and more prone to nicking for a few hours afterward.
Hope this helps, for further info go to
Good luck
they come with little stickers that mark the shape and limit to paint the white part and when it's dry you remove it and paint on top the pink part or whatever.
good luck (:
Does an airbrushed french manicure last longer than hand painted?
I've gotten a hand painted french manicure before but it always chips on the first or second day. Will it last longer if I get it airbrushed on, or is it exactly the same? I disagree with people who say that a french manicure lasts just as long as a solid color. I have no idea why, but the white portion is very fragile. How can I get a long lasting french manicure, without keeping the tackier looking permanent french I have right now?
airbrush definantly last longer!
How can I do a good french manicure by myself and make it look good?
I have done french manicures on myself all the time. But everytime I do it, the white tip is always uneven and sloppy. How can I get a professional looking manicure without going to the salon?
At beauty stores they have french manicure stickers that you put on your nail before you put the white on. It is foolproof.
how much does a french manicure with a design on the ring fingers cost?
i have never gotten my nails done before. and im going for the first time tomorrow. i want to know how much money to bring with me. & whats the diff. between a manicure and a french manicure?
$50
A French manicure usually refers to a polish style......pink and white polish
A manicure is a procedure ....such as filing nails, soaking nails.....ect....
as for the money.....you should call and ask as all Salons have different prices
What is the procedure of getting a French manicure and pedicure at a salon?
What is the procedure of getting a French manicure? For a pedicure? Tell me all the steps? Can you get a design on top of the French mani/pedi? Can the people just paint on the top of your nails or what can they do? Thank you so much for answering. Bye.
alright u obviously know nothing about a french manicure! but its ok...
for a pedicure they clean ur toes/feet blah blah blah
then they paint the white tip part first w/ a very thin brush then they paint over your whole nail w/ a nude color. then they put the top coat
for a manicure if you aren't getting tips (fake nails that are only on the top of ur nail) then they do the same thing as a pedicure
if u r getting tips then they glue these fake nails to the top of ur nails then cute them down to look natural then they paint your them white and paint the rest of your nail nude
most places will allow you to get a design on top
How can I achieve a easy french manicure look without spending alot of money?
I usually use white nail polish and then a peach color top coat but it takes alot of time and usually chips like, 5 minutes after I paint my nails. I don't want to get acrillycs because I have natural long healthy nails. How can I make my nails look better and/or do the french manicure thing without spending a ton time or money?
You could just go pay to have your nails painted. It's usually like 10 dollars. And for some reason, the way they paint it lasts much longer than what I can ever paint. Lol! The airbrush technique seems to last pretty long and is usually a dollar or so more to get done. There are those kits you can buy in Wal-Mart as mentioned by someone above but once again that's very time consuming. The best way to paint them is to do a base (clear) coat, then the white tips and then the pink/peach for the top of the nail and go over the whole nail with a top coat or two. Make sure you let each layer dry adequately. It will usually last you about a week or so.

I like to just file and buff my natural nails so they're shiny.
and when your done with the manicure part. let your nails dry for about 5-10 minutes and then put a topcoat on over it. it'll keep them from chipping and make them look shiny.
hopefully i have helped!
but it shouldnt take you that long to do the french nails yourself. You should go across the nail only once to get the true looking affect, and then down and up with the peach/pink colour starting from the middle of the finger.
Hope that helped
what i did was to paint on the peach base, then pink tip, and a clear top coat. with a top coat, it will chip less easily.
What color nail polish besides, a french manicure, goes with a blue dress.?
I am wearing a blue dress to my friends sweet 16 and it is dark-ish blue. I was wondering what color nailpolish i should wear? My friend suggested white, i dont want to use a light pink or anything like a french manicure, any suggestions?
I actually like the look of a champagne-y color with any blue. Most people think that you should wear silver, but it can look too matchy-matchy in my opinion. A light shimmery beige will look amazing with your dress, and you can still wear whatever color accessories you want.
How Can I make my French Manicure last for a while?
I just got a french manicure on my natural nails today. I was wondering if anybody knows of anyways to make them last for a pretty good while. Or how long they typically last. Thanks guys!
Gosh...my french manicure on my toes has lasted a surprisingly long time...over a week now. But I think that's mainly because it's been a little cold and I've had to wear socks all the time.
On the other hand, my nails started chipping the second day :( I think that wouldn't have happened if I didn't do so many things that used my hands.
So my suggestion for you would be to not do any kind of activity that involves anything possibly chipping away your nail polish...ie: typing (use the back end of a pen instead! lol), dishes w/o gloves, scrubbing, etc.
What is the difference between regular manicure and french manicure?
I noticed different prices when I went to the nail salon the other day, Regular manicure - $15, French Manicure add $17.. what is a regular manicure? I'm new to the whole going to get the nails done thing, so I'm not sure what the difference is..
Also - what does it mean when they say you need your nails 'filled' in 2-4 weeks?
Regular Manicure and French Manicure is the same. The only differences is French Manicure you will have French Polish. Which is white tips and a coat of beige or light pink or clear over. Making it look like natural clean nails. Regular Manicure you have a choice of nail polish colours or nothing.
If your having acrylic, you will need to come bak 2-4 weeks. They apply a tip on your nails to extend the length, using acrylic powder and put a coat over to create a natural looking long nail. During 2-4 weeks time. Your nails will be growing and will be pushing this out, which cause a lil gap close to your cuticles, which will look not that nice, so you have to come back to get that section filled.
Trend Alert: Reverse French Manicure

Ever since I stumbled upon the above picture in an editorial, I cannot stop thinking about nail designs. Quite honestly, the last time I was possessed to don nail art was for my high school prom, which at the time seemed like the coolest thing in the world. French manicures are classic and all, but leave it to John Galliano to take what we know and turn it upside down. Christian Dior’s FW ‘07 featured a unique take on the two-tone look against various pastel colors.

Harking back to the Burlesque era, Dita Von Teese has been fashioning these spicy nails for quite some time now. It works best on long skinny acrylic nails, as that’s how it was done in the time period, but it looks fine on shorter nails as well. If you want to try it yourself, Glamour Magazine’s DIY instructions are easy to follow. Tell us how it works out!
