Nguyen, who also owns a Japanese steak house in Pigeon Forge and two more in Virginia, said he wants the business to reflect family values.

“Everyone who works for me is my family,” he said.

Nguyen, who has a background in engineering, said he decided to open the business after the factory he and his family members worked for in New Jersey was moved overseas, because he had family members who were trained in the business and he wanted them to be able to do something they enjoyed.

“When we do something we like, the customers will follow,” he said.

Customer service is Nguyen’s key to success in the restaurant business and he expects the same to be true of his newest business

What should we name our full service salon and spa?

A friend and I are planning To open a full service salon and spa.
Both of us have different ethnic backgrounds that we are very proud of.
We are also tired of color lines that continuelly curse the beauty business.
Both of us specialize in color/highlights, locs and natural hair.
We have something in mind but we wonder what you may think of that sums us all up.

Design a full service salon/spa?

What would the style be like? Relaxing muted colors or vibrant (what "theme" would you be going for)? Or have the salon divided into seperate areas for the younger hip crowd and older, professional crowd?

Would you play music overhead or not? If so, what kind?

What type of refreshments would you offer guests who come in?

Would you be located in a freestanding building or a strip mall?

Feel free to include any other details.
What would you name it?

I'm 31 and the only time I'd want hip, vibrant, upbeat stuff at a salon is if I was going out and getting my hair or makeup done for the night. And I never do that. :-)

I like to be pampered and relax while doing so. Even when I was much younger.

Ideally, I'd like something like grapes to eat...something light and not salty. Water with a wedge of lemon or lime and tea would be sufficient for drinks.

I like spas either free standing or within a professional building. I hate spas/salons in strip malls with cell phone shops, etc. If the salon had to be with other businesses, I'd look for a place with an internal hallway entrance instead of the door right off the street. It's quieter and more private.

For music, I like piano, guitar and woodwinds for relaxing. SIRIUS or the Dish Network music channels has a Spa channel that I like.

How much does it cost to open up a Day Spa or Full Service Salon?

depends.. but at least $100K.

It appears that the question period has expired. If you have received an answer that meets your needs, please choose one of those as a 'best answer.' If you haven't received a good answer for your question, you may want to consider the following,

1) Re-post your question. Newer questions get more activity on Yahoo! Answers than old ones.
2) If you do re-post your question, consider why it wasn't answered the first time. Could it be more specific? Could it be worded better? Were there grammatical or spelling errors? Was it in the best category?

If it doesn't seem likely that re-posting your question will help you, then here's a listing of my favorite 'answer sites'. Maybe one of them will help you.

I think the metrosexual male is into a good facial, pedicure, and a body massage. It is extremely inviting to involve a beginning special package of this sort.

Women love the usual, facial and body massages, pedicures, manicures, waxing... try to put in the bikini waxing as well, as more and more women are exploring into this region.

GoodLuck. :)

Want to know how to open a spa/boutique/salon?

I am in the process of trying to write a business plan for my spa/salon/boutique, but I am having some trouble writing it. And also I need some help putting it all together as for as getting my supplies. I am going to have a full service salon with a boutique. Possibly a hair supply store so I need some help putting it together as well as where to purchase the items for my business (clothes, hair products, etc.) Is there grants available for minority/women business owners and how can I apply for them. Are there some place I can go that will help me with writing my business plan and get my credit on board. I live in GA.

You can read the article "How to Start a Hair and Salon Business" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol130/hairsalon.htm The article provides a solid introduction to the business, discussing points such as services you can offer, startup requirements, and success tips

For in-depth information, I suggest reading the following books (either borrow from your library or buy from your favorite bookstore)

- Start Your Own Hair Salon and Day Spa by Eileen Figure Sandlin
- 101 Media and Marketing Tips for Salon Owners... by Nanette Miner
- Creating an Excellent Salon: A Guide to Business Practice for NVQ Level 3 and Higher Qualifications
- Milady's Standard System of Salon Skills: Hairdressing
Beyond Beauty: Cosmetology Business Information and Resources
- Salonovations' Day Spa Operations
- Successful Salon Management

You can go to SCORE http://www.score.org for help in writing a business plan. They are typically retired businesspeople who are volunteering their time, so their service is free.

As for grants, it is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html...

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

What are the steps that I need to take, and what things do I need to consider, to open my own salon?

I would like to start with opening a small nail salon that is elegantly decorated with original artwork, sculpture, paintings and drawings that are for sale. Eventually, I would like to expand by adding full salon and or spa services which would include but not be limited to tanning beds, massage, laser hair removal etc.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, & Nolo. All 3 are great resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the sources box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well -- see posted links.

Try reading up on the subject. I put relevant links in the sources box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

What day spa would you recommend in Tulsa, OK?

I am looking for a full service days spa (not a salon), where I can really relax for a few hours. I need massage, facial and a spa pedicure.

Try the new Spa Lux at 91&Memorial. It is a gorgeous spa. They won an award from the Day Spa Magazine for the style. And, you'll probably have the same type of experience like if you are at some ocean resort. It's not a salon. It's a real day spa.
