Column: Donating hair, lock by locks Daily Eastern News

A few weeks ago, I went to get my hair cut.
I wanted about two inches off. I can't stand it when my hair gets really long because it's hard to manage.

It gets tangled easily, it's hard to wash in the shower and it takes a lot longer to comb when I wake up in the morning.

But when I got my hair cut that day, something made me change my view of long hair.

There was an 11-year-old girl there who was also getting her hair cut.

She had beautiful, long, dark hair that reached almost down to her hips. She was getting about 10 inches off.

Her mother, father and baby sister were all there watching; her mother seemed particularly proud of her daughter, snapping photos of the process.

This little girl was cutting the 10 inches off of to donate to Locks of Love and I thought, "Wow. What a generous thing for this little girl to do."

Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that takes 10-inch donations of hair or more and turns

Sometimes it's useful to braid on additional hair and then use the lock extension technique when dealing with shorter hair and creating ...

What's the best way to maintain my twists while waiting for my hair to lock?

I recently got my hair twisted in hopes that it will lock up. I have African textured hair, so there was no backcoming or negligance of any kind. My hair was comb-twisted and treated with all the necessary natural products. How can I maintain my hair in the process of it locking?

my boyfriend retwisted his a couple nights a week before bed

How do you mount a lock of hair into a locket?

I want to keep a short lock of my baby's hair in a necklace-style locket. The locket has nothing inside of it. How do I keep the hair in the locket so that it doesn't fall out when you open the door?

put tape on it..or laminate the hair and then cut it out to fit right in locket, if you want the loose hair, im afraid the locket isnt the answer, use something else.

I like the thread idea..here is a step more, cut a small piece of thick paper (construction paper or card stock) that would fit inside the locket like a photo would, then put a dab of super glue on the center of the paper, and press in the knot of the thread. Then when its dry, you can place it the locket as you would a picture!

Maybe you could tie a piece of thread around it to hold it together? Hmm.. if that doesn't work, maybe you can put a lock of his/her hair in a keepsake box or photo album and put a picture in the locket? Good luck!

hmmm... im sure jewelry stores could help.
www/.KaysJewelry.com!
or Kevinjewelry.com
and it is kinda impossible to keep the hair in place, just dont open the locket.

I am getting a haircut tommorow. I am getting layers. Is it true lock of love wont exept layered hair?

I want to give my hair to Locks of Love. Is it true they won't exept hair that is layerd?

ALL of the hair you donate has to be atleast 10 inches, so if you get it layered and part of it is like 9 inches and some of it is 11, it wont work

if you really want to donate to locks of love, tell them to put your hair in a ponytail and cut off 10 inches. with your remaining hair, layer and style as you please.

well if you have very long hair right now, they will put it in a ponytail and chop it off bluntly. after they have the hair that they need for locks of love, they put it in a bag. after that you can have your hair styled however you want.

i believe you need about 12 to 13 inches in order to donate so they will tie it back snip then layer. i did this once but ended up getting 16 inches cut off just in case.

i donated my hair 2 locks of luv and i had a whole bunch of layers. they still let me! i dont think u will have a problem

What steps would I have to take to begin to lock my hair?

IHave very poccessed hair (a lifetime of relaxing and currently started dying it) but I want to lock now. I know that I may need to cut my hair down to my new growth, but what other steps should I be taking?

Ignore those other people who are obviously not of your race.

Cut off all old growth. Do not apply any processing hair products. Do not comb or brush your hair for a while (like never in 3 or 4 months). Finger comb it to stay in place and frame your face.

Have it twisted in 3 to 4 months when the hair is long enough to twist. Your beautician will recommend hair products you can use to keep the hair locked and she will advice you on daily treatments and washing your scalp.

I love dreads they look good on everyone who does it.

a key or combination lock will work. just don't foreget the code

maybe if you wash it for once

when you cut it all off and let it grow from the root once it has grown at least an inch or two then part you hair by the size of the lock that you want it to b then twist it not like you are twisting pony tails though but like you are twisting the tie from a bread bag then just keep twisting until you have twist it to the tip very tight you might wont to use some beeswax to help it stick and look shine after about a month twist it some more so that the scalp can show every month you will have to twist it until it stays and it will lock now to get red of the locks you will ave to cut your hair off again and let it grow back like you want
hope this helps good luck

You can obviously tell when ignorant people, who know nothing about the topic, try to speak intelligently. Anyway, you will have to cut off all of the processed hair. It will break off and cause split ends if you don't. I would find a natural stylist. You could go to a regular one, but I don't think that they will be as experienced. I found the first link for you, and I hope that it helps. The second link is where I order all of my products. You can try Sally's, but you will probably end up like me (out of money and disappointed).
Look at some local African stores and beauty supply stores for the products on the site, and ask if they can order them. The second link also has a lot of information about the transition, which I did not know. Wash at least once a week. Moisturize every day. 100% shea butter is the best that I have found. Best wishes to you on your endeavor. You will love your hair, and not spending four hours in a stylists chair. Take care.

How should I braid lock my hair?

I know the basics: section, braid, twist as the new growth comes out, but how large should my sections be? I was told I can't have small ones because of the texture of my hair; they'll break. Please! I've seen people with hair waaay nappier than mine with small locks and their hair is fine. I need to hear from African American women that have locks. My hair is thick, 100% natural, and coarse, but not too nappy at all. Any advice on the size I should have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
By the way, I'm not interested in Sisterlocks.
For the record, Ms. R is not tryin to please other people by how I look. My question isn't about trying to "fit in" or get people to talk to me...lmbo! It's about the PROPER way to create a particular hairstyle in order to prevent damage! Again, I'm asking for opinions from Black women who can relate and understand what Black hair goes through and its limitations. Please, no offense to those that aren't Black, but really, how can you know what I'm talking about unless you have Black hair or is trained, regardless of race, in how to work with Black hair. Again, Black women who have experience with wearing or creating braidlocks, please contact me here or by email. Thanks again!

Actually, even if you're not Black, BUT KNOW HOW to do braidlocks, you can contact me, too :-)

How about do your hair how ever you would like. Sound good? Because it sounds good to me. I think people need to stop relying on other people to tell you how to dress and look. Lets be independent okay people?! Alot of people today are so dependent on others that it's sickening! It's sickening that people can't even decide what to look like.

Want my opinion? Of course you did otherwise you wouldn't have posted this question. My opinion is that you need to stop stressing about the way you look. If that is the only way you can get people to talk to you or something then that is very sad!

it can be small just make sure it's not tiny

my hair is about 3 to 4 inches and i want to make it like t-pain or lil wayne dread lock, how can i start?

i like you to tell me how to make my hair a dread lock like that of t-pain and lil wayne. my friends always tell me i will look more better in dread lock that in afro. how do i make my hair to grow fast or will it be ok if i start it from the 3 or 4 inches long?

The best way to start Locs is by getting gel twists like this:

http://www.thenaturalhairexpert.com/images/Picture%20combtwist.jpg

First you wash and condition your hair. Make sure its towel dried but still a little moist.

Then using a loc and twist gel (like Jamaican Mango and Lime) or creamy leave in conditioner (like Cantu leave in conditioner) take a parted section of hair and apply your gel or conditioner. Then take a rat tail comb and comb through the strand of hair, and then use the comb to twist the hair (this takes practice). Spin the comb in your fingers while slowly going to the tips of the hair.

To maintain this you will have to re-twist your hair occasionally. The more you re-twist you hair and the longer you leave the twists in the closer you are to your locs.

no just be patient and wait a couple more inches

Don't comb your hair just let it grow out....
I think that's how you start the "Dreadlock" process....
anyways I would need to see a picture of
you to see if Dreadlocks would look good
on you though.

How long will it take my hair to lock up?

I have short dreads and only had them for about two months and they are starting to grow a little but the maintence on them are a little hard right now because i have to twist them everyday and i was wondering how long will it take them to lock up!!!! Help me please!!!!!!!!!

It depends on your hair...look here for some advice http://www.dreadlocks.com/

What does it mean when you give a lock of your hair to someone??

I gave a lock of my hair to my boyfriend after I got my hair cut and he loves my long hair so I thought I would give him some of it..I know giving someone a lock of your hair has some meaning to it..what do you think? I sure it can mean more then one thing..but I wanna know what people have to say about it.

It was a sign of love. The hair would often be placed in a locket and worn around the neck. Others would seal it between two pieces of paper or in an envelope. Men would sometimes carry it in an envelope in the wallet, money belt, or a pocket. Often the lock of hair would be kept on the person. Sometimes the hair would be placed in a frame with a picture of the loved one who gave it, or a photo of both or in the recipient's Bible. My mother saved my first lock of hair and it's still in an envelope in the trunk with all her treasures.

What is the meaning of a shred/a lock of white hair on a guy's head?

this guy that I like has a lock of white colored hair on his head. And the rest of his hair is normal...brownish lightish blonde.

If it is natural, it is probably caused by a lack of pigmentation in that part of the skin on his scalp that affects the hair follicles. Sometimes this happens when the fetus if being formed.

Sometimes it happens if an injury to the scalp occurs and affects the pigment of the follicles.
