Environmentalists investigate toxic beauty The Uptowner

Street and Amsterdam Avenue scan passersby for receptive-looking faces.  One tentatively walks up to a young woman playing with her phone.

“Excuse me, miss,” he says. “I’m with the organization WE ACT for Environmental Justice and I was wondering if you have a minute to answer some questions about your beauty regimen?” He hands her a two-page questionnaire.

The environmental activist group is surveying women of color uptown about their use of hair products and cosmetics that could endanger their health.

“We noticed that groups conducting surveys around this have focused on middle-class white women,” says Ogonnaya Dotson-Newman, campaign director for WE ACT in Harlem. “But there is a whole area of hair products that you wouldn’t know about unless you live in certain urban areas.”

The survey, which targets African, African-American and Hispanic women, asks how often they visit hair salons, what treatments they get and what hair products they use at the salon and at home. It also asks if they’re aware of the risks of certain chemicals and concerned about exposing themselves and their families to them.

The Truth ABOUT Hair Relaxers

Like I said before, this is not a damn Public Service Announcement and this is not me force feeding you anything. I searched for facts because I ...

Hair relaxers???

I dont mean to sound weird with this but can white people use relaxers on their hair or do they have to get special chemical straightners? Well put it this way, is there a way for me to get straight hair without straighting it every day?(I have naturally curly poofy hair)

i believe you can....i saw a talk show once and they were comparing types of hair straightneers.....they used a relaxer on a white girls hair and she said it lasted about 3months

they have chemical strighteners like a perm...but it strightens yur hair instead!!!

yes there are products that make your hair straight for awhile

No, You don't need a hair relaxer. Hair relaxers are meant for people whose "new growth" or roots are kinky or nappy. Your hair is obviously not like that. I suggest you use a really good blow dryer after you wash your hair and flat iron. Just keep that style for a week, then wash your hair.

Any race can get a relaxer, white girls can get relaxers, and black girls can get perms, it doens't matter.

Will black hair relaxers work on a white person's curly hair?

I have curly, very frizzy hair. I am white and would like to know if black hair relaxers will work to tame my hair.

Yea jus make sure u use 1 of the little girl ones... the chemicals arent as strong as the adult ones but still stronger than the white girl ones :-)

Best hair relaxers you would recommend for curly hair?

I'm 100% Persian and have really thin curly hair. I'm sick of straightening it so are there any really good hair relaxers you could recommend? I heard that Olive Oil Hair Relaxer is one of the best... Any truth to this?

Or you could wear it naturally...

Here are some basic tips for curly hair that you might find helpful:
*Try to find a stylist who knows how to work with curly hair. You can find ratings here: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlsalons
*Don't shampoo every day.
*Comb conditioner through hair in the shower.
*Never use a brush, only a comb, or better yet fingers, when wet.
*Apply styling products to dripping wet hair
*Use styling products suited for your hair type. Don’t know yours? http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types
*Avoid terrycloth towels; use microfiber or tshirts instead.
*Air dry or use a diffuser with your blowdryer.
*Don't touch your hair while it’s drying.

For specific products for your hair type you might want to explore the forums at:
http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/
There you can find others with the same hair type and try out some of their favorite products. So that’s really useful.

Lastly, it has made my hair so much better since I started the curly girl method! I used to almost never wear it down (it was a frizz/poof ball), but now I have pretty, shiny curls. ~:) It’s pretty radical—no sulfates (shampoo) or silicones—but it’s so great for curly hair. Give it a shot and check it out:

Hello

I,ve relaxed hair with ORGANIC OLIVE OIL RELXER (NORMAL). I also have thin curly hair so I took normal and it works not bad. It softly relaxed my new grown hair, BUT ends are still curly :( Maybe I should have proceeded it for longer time? Before this I havent relaxed my hair for one year . Now I've used Organic twice.

So in the end - this relaxer is good for first time. It doesint damage your hair

Sorry for my spelling - english is not my national language.

Hope I've helped

What hair relaxers are not tested on animals?

This is a long shot question and I'm not sure if anyone can answer it, but I figured I'd ask anyway. I'm looking for a lye, chemical relaxer for african american hair that is of low strength or for sensitive scalps and one from a company that no longer tests on animals. Anybody know of one?

I'm not sure I used to get relaxers and I used Mizhani? because its very sensitive to the scalp a very mild relaxer and a great straightener.

I don't sorry, but I'm putting this question an interesting star. I want to know as well. Thanks for asking.

How well do at-home hair relaxers work?

I have naturally wavy hair that's pretty fine [i have around 3 layers], && I dyed it a few months ago at-home, also. With the help of a straightening balm && a tourmaline straightener at 365 degrees, my hair usually stays straight all day, unless it's particularly humid outside - then my natural waves like to take over the ends of my hair.

I'm thinking about using a no-lye at-home relaxer on my hair [I trust myself more than I do a salon] && I'm wondering how well it will work?

I've only seen one person personally that has had her thick ringlet-curly hair relaxed && it still turned out to be a little less wavy than mine is naturally.

Will it keep my hair straight no matter what, even in humidity, or is it a lost cause?

Thanks. :]

OK. You have colored your own hair and now you want to relax it yourself too? Back away from the chemicals! It is worth it to go to a professional if you want to keep the hair on your head. It will last for months and go to someone who has a good reputation. Or get the Maxiglide that gives wonderful results and not all the damage. The products that go with it are really great. It is not permanent but it will last a week. Hang in there, be patient and beautiful hair is worth it!! Good luck any way you go.

They work just fine so long as you know what you are doing. I would go with a non-lye relaxer. I recommend Dudley's. If however you are not sure what you are doing you may fry your hair and even worse, your scalp and require medical attention.

What exactly do hair relaxers do?

My hair is super wavy, and takes forever to straighten. But if I just leave it, it's a poofy mess. I've tried tons of products but nothing works. I don't want to get a really damaging perm, but I do want something that will make my hair more managable and straighter. What do hair relaxers do? How much do they usually cost? How long do they last? Are they damaging? Thanks.

I'm a guy who has naturally really wavy hair, and really wanted straight hair so I got it relaxed.
Uhh well they make your hair straight, permanently. Until the new hair grows in that needs to be retouched. The cost depends on whether you're getting it done professionally or not... usually if you do it at the hair place, it depends on the amount of hair you have.
I got a take home kit from my hair cut lady for 10 dollars. :]
I wouldn't say damaging, they give your hair a different texture though. Nothing severe.

Hope this helps

It really helps to see a photo of your hair. But relaxers are an aid to the flat iron. They make flat iron work a lot easier and less time in the bathroom fixing your hair. They cost 70.00 and up. It all depends on the health of your hair. You will need a touch up every few months. Chemicals to the hair aren't damageing unless you take care with the right professional products. You will need a shampoo that is used for permed hair and conditioner.

Tip your hair dresser 19 yrs. exp.

they do exactly what it says, it relaxes the curls in your hair so that it looks straighter or less curly/wavy and definately makes the hair more manageable. as any other product for hair that alters the texture/color w/e it is damaging but as long as you take care of your hair and use the appropriate products it will stay looking healthy.

Hair relaxers use a chemical, usually lye ,to straighten the cuticle, or inner core of your hair and make it lie flat. They last as long as your hair grows, and once it grows out, in about 6-8 weeks, you'll need a retouch, (to apply relaxer only to the roots of your hair of new growth.) I don't know what i would've done without a relaxer! If you don't take care of your hair properly ,then yes, your hair can be damaged. But usually damage is mininal. Keep your hair conditioned and trimmed and you'll be fine. Just know, once you do a relaxer, the only way to start fresh with your natural hair, is to cut all of the relaxed hair off. Revlon fabulaxer, Soft & beautiful and Dark & Lovely are some names that i have used and they work great.

Are the hair relaxers used in salons safe?

I have an appointment for a hair relaxer treatment. And the consultant at the salon said it was mild and it would not cause damage to my hair. Is it safe? I already have some hair loss. So I am worried.

they are safe to use on HEALTHY hair. if your hair is not in good shape you should wait till it is. and it you have hair loss already(you didnt say why) i would say its a bad idea. get your hair healty and then get it done.

there are some for diff hair types i think she noticed ur hair and picked one out for ur hair type

u have nothing to wry bout

If it is done right it will be fine. do not scratch your head before though.

How much do at home hair relaxers usually cost?

k so i dont have kinky hair or anything like that but i do have curly hair that is extremely unmanageable. towards teh end of my hair it is less curly and at the roots i have veryyyyyyyy little curls. i aslo have my hair in layers and the longest layer is about one or two inches past my shoulders. i thought a relaxer could possibly try to fix my issues and i have had it done before. the results were amazing but at the salon, it was extremely expensive, so i was wondering, if i just do it myself at home, how much would the kit or solution possibly cost???

Depending where you go and the brand, relaxer kits can run from approximately $3.99-8.00. Make sure you follow directions carefully....neutralize and condition your hair properly to avoid over processing. If you have virgin hair, its best you consult your stylist for best results.

I think our hair is similar, I have naturally wavy/curly hair and can wear it that way even with a relaxer just by wetting my hair and adding styling foam. At home relaxers do o.k. for me, but dont seem to last very long.

Good luck!!

Do hair relaxers make your hair totally straight?

My hair is wavy, if I get a relaxer will my hair be completely straight?

Yes...you may need to touch up your edges with a flat iron every once in a while to keep the sleek look.

Have any reccomendations for inexpensive hair relaxers?

I have curly but no matter what frizzy hair. I usually straighten it but it takes about half an hour to do. I dont really have that much time with school and stuff. Blow drying usually just adds to the frizz no matter what. Do you have any reccomendations for an inexpensive hair relaxer that i can use to straighten my hair without a blow dryer. Thanks!!!
