Franklin man opens hair salons in MetroWest Milford Daily News

Spending 18 years of his life working in financial services, Franklin resident Cal VanDeGiesen never envisioned his next career move would involve scissors and salon chairs.

But in late 2007, VanDeGiesen, 57, said he could tell the economy was taking a turn for the worse, and decided to close his financial firm.

“A lot of my customers were banks and I didn’t think they’d make it,” said VanDeGiesen. “I was right.”

After closing his business, VanDeGiesen said he considered retiring, but within the first few months he was bored. He said he and his wife, Ann Marie, decided to look into purchasing a franchise together, and met with a consultant for ideas.

“They did a profile on us and said we should consider salons,” said VanDeGiesen. “After I picked up my jaw from the ground I decided to look into it.”

In October 2009, he and his wife opened Great Clips, a salon at 290 Turnpike Road (Rte. 9) in Westborough.

What hair salon is best recommended for ladies hair cuts?

And how much they charge?
I can't really trust any hair salon because of the mess they did to my friend that's why i prefer to go to a hair stylist whom I can trust on cutting my hair exactly how I want it.

First let me say, "you get what you pay for" If your paying anything below $22 for a haircut, one out of ten, you won't be satisfied.

In order to get a true personalized haircut you will need to allow the stylist to blow-out your hair, this way she/he can see the way your hair falls and be able to tweak it in the areas needed.

I agree with your 2nd response, look for local independent salons.

I would call them and ask them the following questions:

 Do you offer tier pricing (different level of experienced stylists)?
 Does your staff receive weekly or monthly in-salon training?
 What cutting system do you use? (the one that comes back with an answer fantastic) is the one you have the best odds on getting what you wanted.

my preferences - Tony & Guy and Vidal Sassoon Cutting Systems(not the shampoo)

Now you got the salon, the next is make an appointment to get your hair styled (just styled) if you feel you connected with her/him reschedule for them. (p.s. if you know what style you want, bring a picture. Saying it will not be as clear, hairstylist use different terminology then someone not in the beauty industry.

I know that’s all of work to get a good hair cut but you will see it’s worth it.

Let me know how it goes.

lol

regis hairstylist

i go here and always come out with a smile

I wouldn't go to any chain salon - chances are you are getting someone right out of beauty school.

Ask around and see if there are any good local salons. If you see someone who has good hair, ask them who their stylist is.

How do find a good hair salon when you move to another city?

I have moved to another city and I would like to find a good hair salon. How do I know if I found a good one. What are some things I should look for in the stylist(s) and within the salon that lets me know that my hair will be properly taken care of?

(1) Ask people about their reputation as a salon.
(2) Are you looking for salons that do funky cuts & color, or are you more conservative?
(3) Have a consultation. Take pictures of the hair cut or color that you want & see if the stylist & you are on the same page.
(4) I think price kind of helps me know what kind of salon they are. If they have cheap cuts then they probably have stylist that are more new to the business. They may not be able to do fresh, new styles like a trendy, more expensive salon might.
(5) A middle-of-the-road place I go to in Kansas City is called Beauty Brands. Cuts starting at around $40+ and colors about $60+.
(6) I would still try to find someone that has been in the business a long time, and/or one that has been at a particular salon for a long time. This says a lot for me.

Well, first of all, I would ask some of the women you've met since you moved there who they reccommend. Next, when you visit a Salon, look to see what type of products they use. Make sure they use professional hair care products. Next, talk to your stylist and get a feel for them. See if they are willing to listen to you and work with you for a hairstyle that is you and not what THEY want it to be.

good luck!

Just go around and watch people coming out of salons. If you like their hair it's a good one.

Ask somebody there, be friendly. they sure know everything there!

CALL LOCAL BEAUTY SCHOOL AND THEY CAN DIRECT YOU

The best way ..Is to ask other women , espically if they have the same type or style of hair that you do.. Good Luck!

First of all, word of mouth is the best advertising. Ask around. Secondly, if you notice a really good hair style on someone, ask them where they go.You will know when you find a good one when as soon as you walk in, the stylist is focased on you and you only. You have her undivided attention. You don't want one that is cutting your hair, talking to someone else, and oops, there goes your ear. When you do pick a stylist, notice her hair, and her appearance. That says alot. Would you want somebody to do your hair when they just have a basic ponytail, and look awful. Another thing to consider is her manners. If she is gossipy about other clients, imagine what she is saying about you when you leave. I do not see the difference in price, it is just the name. A $15 cut, and a $100 cut. Both stylists went to school, there is no special school, that is called butter fingers. I notice that alot, and had to redo them expensive hair cuts, and colours. Find somebody who you can connect to, and have a bond. And do not get your hair done, if she or he is having a bad day, you could get the brunt end of things.

ask people whose hair u like where they go.ask for their stylists names. you can never tell what will happen to your hairby lookin at a stylist or a salon..you need to see what they are producin...look at their clients..!!

What should I do to my hair at the hair salon ?

I will be going to the hair salon on Sunday with my cousin. She will be getting her hair permed but my hair is naturally curly thick and long and it's soft so it's easy to straighten. I don't want to perm it I just wanna figure out what kind of hairstyle should I go for at the salon.

If you can please provide links to pictures of hairstyles.

Just get it cut in layers. If your hair is already curly, you wouldn't get a perm.

How long does it takes to learn in training hair salon before you get to be hairdresser?

I see training hair salon almost everywhere: It offers cheaper price to customer than regular hair salon.

When you just learning how to cut from zero, do you directly learning from these salon, or they teach you first on some other place?

How long you're gonna stay in training salon before you apply job somewhere?

If they gonna teach you first in other place, how long it would take?

Beauty colleges take about a year. They start with the instructor showing you on wigs, how to cut hair. Then you cut each other's hair or family members hair. The instructor is there over your shoulder all the time. From there you go to customers. They know you are a student and the instructor is there to fix any mistakes. It is a great way for a student to learn, but nerve wracking! After that year you can take more instruction, or go to the shows to see the new stuff. It is a really good career if you pay attention and do what your customer wants done. Hope that helps. Nana

I use beauty schools to have my hair cut, colored, etc. You get the experience, I get a good price, and I have never left UNHAPPY! I believe it takes about 12 to 18 months.

How do you find a good hair salon to get your hair cut without trying them first?

Just wondering. How do you find a good hair salon to get a good cut without actually trying lots of different ones and maybe running into a bad one first.

Thanks

Tatum

Notice other women's hairstyles. Then approach them, complementing them. Ask where and who cuts their hair. I have done this many times, especially after moving to a new area. Women WILL respond, and I have found some of the best, and least expensive, stylists in the US this way. Having lived all over the country, finding a good stylist is just as important as finding a good doctor, dentist, mechanic and plumber! This has always worked for me!

ask your friends where they go anyone with a good hair do ask em where they had it done

My advice to people is always this: When you see someone who has hair that you envy ask them where they have their hair done. When you hear the same salon or stylist's name several times........that's the one!
Also, if you call a salon to book an appointment and they can get you in THAT day....there's a reason! You should want to book with someone who has at least a 2 week wait.
Good luck!

Well honestly that is like so easy, you go into the salon and look around and if it is full you know that they do good to hair and if it is empty you know they suck when i say full i mean loads of people waiting even when there are loads of hair stylists around then you know that they do a good job that is simply it

When it comes to getting your hair done, word of mouth is everything. However, if that is not possible there is a simple rule that I have always lived by when it comes to my hair.

"Never let a person do your hair if their hair looks like sh*t."

Walk into a salon, if they ask if you need help, just tell them you would like to look at there hair books, then start surveying the room. Listen to the conversations, pay attention to techniques and eventually you will know it that facility or stylist can help you. Finally, as questions! Find out what a persons level of experience is.

How do I find a hair salon that will match a hairstyle to my facial shape?

I need a new hairstyle, and I have no idea what will look good on me. I'm looking for a salon in Jacksonville, FL, that will be able to look at my face and recommend the best hairstyle for me. I want something like the makeovers you see on TV, but just for the hairstyle. My hair is very long, waist-length, and all one length except that my bangs are chin length, so the stylist will have a "blank canvas" so to speak.

There is a sight on the internet that will show you how to figure out your face shape. It also shows you the right hair style for your face shape. I'm sorry I can't remember the site. Just play around with search. Also you should go to a stylist with long hair. This way she most likely won't go scissor happy.

What color should ask for at the hair salon?

At the end of the summer, My mom promised me she would take me to the hair salon and the nail salon. I have auburn hair already but i want the color and style as Ashlee Simpson's new red hair. What color should I ask for? Also at the nail salon i want acrylics but a cool color not like a french manicure really, so what should i ask for?

for your hair color, i would definitely bring a picture of what you want. its alot easier for your stylist to see what you want than listen to you describe it. for your nails i would go with either a light, almost sheer pink ( it will look nice if you got a nice summer tan), or you can go with a fall color like deep red, or burgundy.

What's a franchised hair salon with a good reputation i can find near me?

I'm asian and trying to get my hair layered with a new hairstyle but i'm not sure where to go.
Would a barbershop/hair salon owned or run by asians be a better idea because my hairstyle would be similar to the ones they style.
Where's a good place to go to?
are greatclips, supercuts, arizona hair co,or fantastic sams any good?

Jimbo, My old roomate owns a salon in Arizona but I can't remember the name of it. Here's a list of salons that might help. http://www.topratedhairsalons.com/Arizona-Hair-Salons.html
