Brazilian Hair Treatment Comes Under FDA Fire New York Times (blog)

A popular hair-straightening product called Brazilian Blowout, which has received scrutiny in recent months after tests found it contains significant amounts of the harmful chemical formaldehyde, has come under new government pressure. The United States Food and Drug Administration has stepped into the fray by warning the company that its product contains a “poisonous or deleterious substance” and that it was falsely labeled as formaldehyde-free.

In a letter last month to Brazilan Blowout officials , the agency said that tests showed that up to 10 percent of the straightening formula is a liquid form of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has been linked to myeloid leukemia and rare cancers of the nose and upper mouth in embalmers and was officially added to the list of known carcinogens in June.

Officials from Brazilian Blowout, based in North Hollywood, Calif., have denied the straightener contains or emits more than trace levels of formaldehyde.

Hundreds of beauty salons offer the Brazilian Blowout treatment, which is remarkably popular despite a price that can run up to $500.

Hair straightening?

I have really really curly slightly frizzy hair. It's hopeless in humid weather. I live in Florida, so you can only imagine what it's looked like lately.
Anyway, I have a really nice straightening iron that works really well on good days, but when it's humid my hair just curls up and poofs out. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how I can get it to stay straight even when it's humid outside?

Use Matrix Sleek Look Smoothening cream before you straighten
It protects hair up to 450 degrees and keeps your hair from frizzing, afterwards use the silkening spray. Works wonders

Don't get your hair chemically straightend!!!!

Get it chemically straightened at a salon.

I always wanted curls!!

frizzease

paul mitchel supper skinny serum - smoothing condtion
this product comes in a thin clear / see through bottle
the top is a light green pump
i have only seen it come in two sixes one is very small much like a travel size bottle of shampoo and the other is about as tall as a regular bottle of shampoo but it is thinner / not as wide as shampoo bottles

i swear this stuff is the BEST stuff out there - i love it ! and it smells really good :P

you can use it on wet or dry hair for whatever style you need if you have really long hair like i do ( almost to my butt ) i would use about two quater sizes amount - same thing for really thick hair
use your best judgement on that

i can not say that it would keep your hair completely straight in this situation but it would really control it

i hope i helped

as for the first answer dont get it chemically straightened. when your roots start growning in you'll look like a freak. only get it chemically relaxed so that its easier to manage and when your roots grow in you wont look so weird. unless you get it touched up very very often. which means big bucks.

if you find out about the humid part i'd appreciate it if you contacted me. i have the same problem. thanks and good luck!

I have the same prob except i live in New York, there is not a whole lot you can do although they do make a product called Biosilk and that helps the frizz stay down.

Do not wear it straignt on humid days.

Try the products that people are suggesting and invest in an expensive straightener that is ceramic.

BE WARNED: I have the same hair type and I use my straightener all the time. Lately my hair has been breaking off really close to my scalp. Even though I use mine on low heat and I don't leave it on my hair for very long, this still is happening. I hope it doesn't happen for you.

I really like curly hair i used a straightner and it damaged my hair if u use straightners they wont let your hair grow advice leave it curly babe

yeah dosent it suck?? every one is like " i want curley hair like yours" and i am always like "i wish i had strait hair" so i think the best thing you can do is to for one dont straighten it every day and the other is put like hair spray and this garnier stuff for frizzy hair and it works really good i love it. but dont chemically straighten it because for one you will kill your hair and two when your hair grows it will be curley at the top and that will look funny. and its humid in texas too. the heat it burns!!!!!! good luck

use the ceramic flat iron.

Got2B, glossy... its great. apply it after you straight your hair...

Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum is amazing. Also CHI Silk Infusion-IT IS BY FAR THE BEST, TRY IT AND YOU WILL BE SOOOOO AMAZED AT WHAT IT DOES FOR CURLY HAIR! Also, before you blow dry or straighten your hair, use one of the above mixed with Frizzeaze by John Frieda. Mix 'em together and your hair will be unstoppable!!! lol

How to improve wavy hair and straighten it

What are good hair straightening sprays/shampoo to use on layered hair?

I recently got a haircut that is layered and found that after washing my hair it becomes really wavy/curly. I don't want to spend every morning straightening my hair with an iron, so is there a hair straightening spray/gel I can put on that will straighten and keep hair straightened?

Also looking for any good shampoos that will also straighten hair.

I really liked the Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Shampoo and conditioner and styling products. my hair still poofs out if i was hmy hair at night and sleep on it wet, and i have to straighten it in the morning, but if i let it air dry with produckt in it or blow it dry, it comes our really straight and shiny and smells great!

Here are some great products you can use. It is not a good idea to straighten your hair everyday.

Dear friend, Hair falling is a global problem.

Apply some fresh Aloevera on your hair and leave it for 30 minutes before your bath. Use it daily untill you stop hair falling. This is a great solution to hair falling and I found some new hair also in the places where i lost the hair before years.

Tips to maintain a shining healthy hair:
1. Use a conditioner less shampoo and use to rinse your hair every day.
2. keep it always clean. that is very much important. Wash hair every time you sweat.
3. Always stimulate the skin beneath your hair while you take bath.
4. Don't use so many chemicals and beauty products on your hair. Use herbal products.

What is the best hair straightening serum?

I have really, really curly hair that is alot of trouble to straighten with an iron every day. Is there any straightening serum out there that you just put into your hair to straighten extremely curly hair?

Are you looking to straighten it permanently? Get a hair relaxer, or even a perm kit and comb it straight instead of curling it.

There is a serum that comes with the Chi straight iron. This stuff is the most amazing thing I have ever put in my hair! It makes it sleek, smooth, straight, AHHH Its amazing! Look into Chi products

You can buy shampoos and conditoners to halp straighten hair and you can also buy creams and stuff just go to somewhere like boots or superdrug they have quite alot of good stuff.

schwarzkopf

I have very curly hair and its extremely long and thick as well I have used bio silk since i was little to straighten it. It protects ur hair agianst the iron as well!

I have the same problem & it gets old having to straighten the mess out of you hair on a daily basis but in my experience, hair serums just make your hair look oily & greesy. It's hard to really get it spread evenly & with good consistancy. BUT I've started using Garnier fruitese shampoo & conditioner & I love it. Try to blue & it really helps to tame my hair. However, if you are desparate for a serum, go to your hairdresser & get CHI hair serum. It works well, especially on your dead ends (because of ironing it every day) & it smells wonderful.

What is the difference between a Japanese hair straightening system and a relaxer?

i am thinking about using the japanese hair straightening system for my hair but i had a bad experience with a relaxer so i would like to know the difference.Anybody that has used it please tell me how u like it.And i really really really want to know wut hair type this specific straightening system is good for.

Thanks to everyone that answers =]

ok, if you have a relaxer in any part of your hair you can not use a jap straightening system. A relaxer is sodium hydroxide, Jap is ammiona thio. When the two are mixed they cause a chemical reaction that will burn the hair causing extreme damange.. Now to answer your question.

The jap system also know as chi striaghtening, ionic, bioionic. optismooth etc.is normally done on non african american hair as the texture and curl pattern is to strong in that type to allow this type to work as the chemical isnt strong enough, This is actually the same chem used as the first part of a jerri curl.

A relaxer is usually a lye based product which is stronger and removes the curl from stronger hair and from a stronger curl pattern.

Japanese hair straightening last alot longer and is gentler to your hair. My sister in law had it done months ago (look to spend about 4 hours there and $400. though!) but her hair is still silky smooth and looks great! She used to have wild frizz and uneven curl and now she has no issues at all. She is half mexican and italian but her hair was just outta control. Whereas before she had the hassles of straightening irons and blow dryers and products, now she can even let it air dry and it still looks shiny and healthy and frizz free

Other ways of permanently straightening hair other than Japanese straightening, and just using a straightener?

My hair is already kinda pin straight, but it gets messed up and tangled really easily. I want to get my hair as straight as if i was going to do jap hair straightening. I was going to get my hair Jap straightened, but its really risky, with all those chemicals. Also, straighteners don't do anything to my hair other than make it a lil warmer, since my hair is already straight.

brush it....

Get a body perm. It's a perm with mega big rollers. BIG a$$ rollers. It was a way of straighting hair before the Japanese systems.

So you have naturally straight hair and you want it even straighter??? That makes no sense. Every one hair gets messy.

there is something called Brasilian Keratin straightening

just dont striaghten it then whats the point...unless theres still a kink, then use herbal essences dangerously straight and that should help.

Japanese hair straightening system- how does it work?

I am interested in getting this done because my hair has spiral curls but I am mixed so when I straighten it, it's beatuiful but it takes too much time and straightening it is causing it too much damage. I prefer to wear my hair straight, so if I get the Japanese Hair straightening system I wanted to know if I decide not to get it "touched up" and I want my ahir to go back to curly, do I have to let it grow out? Or, is there a reversal process? How does the Japenese hair straightening system work and does anyone recommend or not recommend it, and why?

I had this done...it was GREAT....for all of 4 months. It only cut my styling time down to 20 minutes instead of 40. Blah..the point was to wash and go with straight hair..that was NOT the case it looked dry and damaged if I combed it out straight without styling with a blower( which I also was trying to reduce)I looked like frizz mop!. My hair was great when left wet with leave in conditioner...wavy and nice...or if I blowed it and falt ironed it.....and then the growth began.
My roots looked way too curly as opposed to the rest of the hair and I learned that lot of places don't quite give you a discount if its a touch up of the roots...they charge a simliar price or almost half.
4 months after my hair began to fall out....and break....causing me to cut 4 inches off and begin repairing the rest. damaged damaged damaged.
It looks great in the begining but that was made for people with WAVY hair not curly. You will regret it. Spend time on frequent trimming and conditioners to repair heat styled hair...do NOT do it. You will regret it. Trust me it will look better and bouncier with just a blow dry..don't do the chemicals.

It's garbage don't waste your money.

What is the charge for doing a permanent hair straightening in bangalore in Indian Rupees?

What is the charge for doing a permanent hair straightening in bangalore in Indian Rupees?
Is it good for hair and do i need to take any extra care after straightening? I'd really love to do it :)

I don’t know which city she stays in to say 10-15k to straighten your hair, there is a beauty parlor near residency road-brigade road signal, it is in the same line of shops of "Indiana Fast Food" next to St. Patrick’s Church Residency Road gate, I cant get the name, but they are famous and good at straightening and also they would charge you depending on your hair and the amount of work has to be done, of course they will not tell you that, it should not be more than 4k max.

Of course it's not good for hair!!
It would cost anywhere in the range of 10000-15000 rupees generally, but can be quite significantly more or less depending on the parlour, so go to a couple of parlours and find out for yourself. Also, ur hair will become VERY dry, so oiling, conditioning and avoiding blow-drying would be essential...

What's the difference between hair straightening irons?

There's so many different types in stores. What should I look for when I buy a hair straightening iron?

one with tourmaline

How can I treat my hair after the Japanese hair straightening procedure?

I recently had the Japanese hair straightening procedure done on my hair on Monday, but it' still not quite straight. It gets frizzy around my face and is wavy in the back and sides. My hair before the procedure was very frizzy and curly. I washed it for the first time last night. Am I able to use a straightening iron or should I go in for touch-ups? Are there any leave-in conditioners, etc. that you would reccommend?

Yes! Definately use Sunsilk "Straighten Up" products. They all come in purple bottles and are at Walmart, Target, etc.

They have shampoo, conditioner, leave in, etc.

Hope I helped! Good luck it works great!

Can you get japanese hair straightening on hair that has been dyed?

If not, how long do you have to wait after the dye job until you can get the japanese hair straightening?

i think you should wait till the dye gets a lil warn out. then do the hair straightening.
because i dyed my hair && then did the straightening thing too. and it burnt off a whole CHUNK of my hair, cuhz of the chemicals, and it took for ever to grow back out. so i suggest you wait.
