Hair salons and barbershops: A growing industry CNN

Capital Heights, Maryland (CNN) -- If you're looking for an industry that's thriving even during these tough economic times, look to the hair industry. It may be the closest thing to recession-proof.

According to Census data, the number of barbershops in Maryland rose nearly 11% between 2007 -- when the recession hit -- and 2009, while the number of beauty salons in the state jumped more than 17%. Nationwide, there were 18.6% more barber shops and 14.4% more beauty salons in 2009 than in 2007.

"Barbering is definitely on the upswing. We see it in our schools. The enrollment is up," said Derek Davis, a vice president of the National Association of Barber Boards of America. "We've seen an increased number of people taking the exam to get licensing."

Tarsa Scott, a real estate agent turned stylist at Fabulocs, a natural hair salon in suburban Maryland, chalked up the sector's strength to one thing: the desire to look and feel good.

"Most people -- especially women -- even when there are bad times, we want to feel good," said Scott, who got an office job after the housing market collapsed, but turned to hair styling to supplement her income. "We're not going to sacrifice feeling beautiful just because we're in a bad situation."

Hair Stylist?

I'm only 15 but I know that when I get older I want to be a hair stylist. I can cut hair I can style and dye hair but I don't know how to pursue this dream. What kind of small jobs (if any) can/should I get to help with this? also what are good colleges for hair styling to go to please help I really want to have this as a career I just don't know how to get started. thanks for the help :)

You go to beauty school.

Start applying at local salons. You start out sweeping floors, but eventually, you move up. Ask the really good stylists you know what schools they went to.

You have to go to a cosmetology school.OR..you can be an apprentice for a year or 2 depending what state you live.

Depending on your state, there isn't much you can do to prepare. Requirements vary by state, but minimum age is 17 - 18 years old, and a GED or high school diploma are required as well. Just watch closely when you go the salon to get your hair done. Some states allow salon assistants, some still even allow you to be an apprentice stylist and forego school altogether (but the time it takes to get your license is somewhere around 3 - 4 years, rather than the 1 to 2 years to get licensed by going to a school).
Good luck. You will love it when you get there. :-)

I don't know what the other state rules are.. but i do know California... so i will tell you what you need here

first off you need to be 16 years or older

you need at least a 10th grade education

some of the high schools in the area have an after school part time program called ROP and you can go to beauty college for free.. except you have to buy the supplies you need.. sissors combs and things like that

after age 18 you can go through some of the local jr. collages for free beauty schooling
it will require you to attend full time

both of these options will equal 1600 hours (about a year of school)

go to your own school and ask the counselors what you need to do for your career choice. I am sure they would be happy to help you find your path

Good Luck

start off as a shampoo girl and ask around to what beuty colleges the stylists went to. get your info, finish highschool, apply at the college you want to attend to get your license, apply for a job, and maybe someday you'll get your own salon.

What should I ask my hair stylist to get an asian /anime hair?

BTW I am a guy and I'm planning on getting an asian/anime hair cut but what should I ask my hair stylist to do for me. I've heard to ask for thin and layer, but I don't exactly know what that means. Can someone tell me what is the most important thing to tell my stylist for an asian haircut?

just tell them you want a very layers and very texturized but bring a picture of an example of that haircut so the stylist have an idea of what they are working with

It's definently layering but bring in a picture of what you want also, that can help your hair stylist.

You might want to bring a picture with you to show your hairstylist
You might have to make ajustmentsbecause (obiously) human hair wont work exactly like anime hair. Anyway, good luck! =]

xx

How would i describe to my stylist how to cut my hair with layers and side bangs?

I have long hair and i want layers put in and side bangs 2. How would i describe this 2 the stylist

No pics!! Cuz whenever i bring in pics the hair stylists cut it really ugly!
so when i want side swept bangs i just say i want bangs to here (point at my nose)?

tell her your question
i need bangs to the tip of my nose they have to go to the side and i need short or long layers

best answers please`

just like you said here.

with words.... why, doesn't she speak english?

just tell her exactly what u told us.... that you want layers and side swept bangs. if u want, u can tell her how short you want the layers and ur bangs to b. or which way you want them to be swept.

see, my experiences are opposite of yours. whenever i dont bring in a pic they butcher my hair, but the one time i brought in one they did a great job!

tell them you want layers and side bangs.

If im on the same page as you about the style you want Im pretty sure Jennifer Aniston had a cut like the one you want. Id goggle her hair styles.

why dont you tell her like you just said it? keep an eye on what she's doing and and guide her with, "Oh i want that this short' or "layered" or however you want it. Stylists are usually great at following directions and asking questions, although they should be considering what they're doing. If this one stylist doesn't suit your needs get a new one or talk to her or his/her supervisor.

if showing pics to your stylist gets you a bad haircut, i'd say change your stylist. what are you doing with that "professional"?
the best way to show the style you want is to show them what you want.
try some others hair saloons, i think that's the best way to go.
remember that a great hair stylist would manage to do a fine haircut either with or without a picture.

Do you have layers in it now? If not, tell the stylist that you want to start out with a few longer layers, to see what they are going to look like. Then you can always take them shorter afterwards if you'd like. And always have a longer starting point for the bangs too, because once it's cut you can't put it back on!!!

How much tip I should give to my hair stylist and others?

My Hairstylist usually charge form $40 to $70, then another person in the salon whom massage and wash my hair. How much tip I should give to each of them? if they charge $70, is $10 enough for the hair stylist and then $5 enough for the person who wash my hair? what about if they $40?
Well, if you are representing an organization for important meetings. A Cheap haircut will get you no where. Same reason why you have to wear suit for some occasions.
and please treat your husband well, do give him more motherly allowances.

I am just amazed there are men who pay $70 for a haircut. I only pay 12$ with great results. I can't imagine my husband paying over 10$. of course, he's no girly-man.

Can anyone suggest a hair stylist in the Virginia Beach area who specializes in very curly hair?

I straighten my hair with a flat iron daily and need to find a stylist who can give me a great short haircut that is easy to maintain . Anywhere in the Hampton Roads area is ok.
No, not a college student, I live in Chesapeake. My hair is extremely course and wiry, it takes years to grow and has never grown more than an inch or two below my chin. I am 32 and have yet to find a stylist who can help me.

I assume you're a college student near HU I know of a few places. What is your texture?

What Does it mean when my hair stylist says she is cleaning up the layers?

Very simple question. What does it mean when a hair stylist says she is going to clean up my layers?

trim them. make them look like they're there if they've grown out some. make them look "better"

To make them look better

Cutting them just a little to get the split ends off. It gives your layers a fresher look.

Do I have to go to the hair stylist again to get side-swept bangs?

I got my hair cut at a professional hair style place about a month ago. My hair is layered, shoulder-length, is rather thick, and I part it at the side and use a flat iron to make it straight.

I've decided I want side-swept bangs, so do I have to wait until next time I go to the hair stylist, and tell him that I want side-swept bangs? Or can I do it myself without cutting?

I just watched a video on how to do it.... and I'd say definitely go to the hair stylist to get it done.
Looks complicated!

How much does a hair stylist make in philadelphia?

I am trying to find a good school. I've heard of empire does anyone know if its any good? Or any other schools you know about in the philadelphia area would be great help. Is anyone currently working as a hair stylist with any tips for me?

All feedback is greatly appreciated THANKS

Stylist salaries differ throughout the country. Also, they differ based upon the type of salon you decide to work for. You can choose a salon in which you get paid a commission or you can rent a space in which you pay for your station with a weekly/monthly rent and your salary is based upon how many clients & services you perform. In general, if you are just getting out of Beauty School, you may want to choose a salon in which you get paid a commission, so you can build your clientele. Once you have a solid client base, you can move over to a booth rental situation. Also, many graduates work as apprentices in top salons and work their way up to a chair, as you learn from top stylists and top salons.

When interviewing schools in your area, it is important to know what their graduation rate is? And most imporant, what percent of their students pass the state board licensing exam on their first try? Schools with a higher graduation and exam pass percentages will be your better schools. In addition, schools that have solid haircolor programs are great, as you will make so much more money by performing haircolor services than you ever will by just cutting & styling. Look for a school that has a partnership and specialty training program with industry leaders, such as Clairol Professional.

There are some websites you can check out, see below. Check out ads for stylists to gage salaries. Most of the time the salary is really based on you, your client base, the types of services you perform and how many hours you work. Best wishes with your career in the salon industry.

Where can I find a good Japanese hair stylist in Portland, OR?

I am planning to go to Portland, OR to visit sometime soon and I want to have my hair straigt and trim little bit. So I want to find a good hair stylist to fix my hair. I have too many bad experiences in Kentucky.

Why do you want a particular culuther?

Is it ok to switch hair stylist within the same salon?

I have a salon like where I use some non-hair cutting services. I got my hair cut and colored by a stylist there a while ago. I wasn't too happy with the color job, but I've heard great things about other stylists at the salon. Is it ok to switch to one of them?

yeah cuz some of them work better in with different hair essentials
