After 45 years, salon to do its last 'do Fort Worth Star Telegram

' ' & -->

FORT WORTH -- It was 45 years ago when a young widow and mother scraped together the money to open a small beauty shop along Montgomery Street called Curl & Swirl. Times were different. Vidal Sassoon's revolutionary concept of "wash and wear" was foreign to the women who frequented the shop for weekly hair appointments. Ruth West cut, set and colored hair, gossiped with clients and traded snapshots of children, then grandchildren, and these days, great-grandchildren. Today, West, now 80, will set her final hairdo. Curl & Swirl will close its doors. "This is my family," West said. "But I guess it's time for me to retire. Honestly, I'll probably go crazy." Much has changed since 1966, but not at Curl & Swirl. Inside the small brick building, pink and blue floral curtains still hang from windows, clients still sit on eggplant-colored chairs while they wait their turn, and wood paneling still covers the walls. Old-fashioned cone-shaped dryers still line one wall. Regulars know better than to ask West for a blow-dry. To her, the blare of a blow-dryer is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Styles have come and gone. The beehive. The pageboy. The French roll. Prices have changed, but not by much. A haircut is $9; a hair set is $10. Tinting is $35, and permanents start at $45. Over the years, the average age of customers has steadily climbed -- the oldest is 102 -- and the once-long list of clients has dwindled. "Most of my clients have passed on," said Jo Elaine Evans, 67, who works with West and is also retiring today. "You see a lot of that working here." Arthritis pain shoots through the hands of West and Evans, who have worked side by side since they day the shop opened. "In all these years, the two of us have never even had a fuss," Evans said. "Can you believe that?" Child after child spent days here, learning to crawl and walk and talk amid the hair spray and shampoo stations. In 1966, child care was not prevalent, and the stylists brought their children to work. A bassinet and high chair were permanent fixtures. "One of us would be setting hair," Evans said, "while the other was changing a diaper." West's granddaughter, Randi Whitis, recalled playing on a quilt on the brown linoleum floor, learning about curlers and permanents. When she heard her grandmother was closing the shop, Whitis immediately brought her 8-month-old son. The ladies promptly rolled his short hair in curlers before his father could protest. "This was my second home," Whitis said. "I grew up here." Customers returned week after week, stopping by after work, and later, finding rides when they could no longer drive. Rosalyn Woodfin, who comes in weekly for a shampoo and set, sat straight in the chair as West brushed curls out of her short hair. "I wasn't even gray when I started coming here," said Woodfin, 85. "Ruth knows just how to do my hair." Jean Brandt, 91, stopped by to get her hair done the day before she was scheduled to fly to China to visit her grandson and new great-grandchild, who live there. "I love the conversation and stories you hear," Brandt said. Before leaving, the two women hugged. "Oh, I'm going to miss you," Brandt told her, as the two friends said goodbye.

Hair Tinting????

I got my hair highlighted the other day and I wanted light brown highlights with a little blonde here and there ( because I naturally have dark brown hair, and I didnt want to go too extreme). I find out that the hair dresser used two different blondes in my hair, and when the foil came out, it looked soo blonde contrasting against my already natural dark brown hair. Anyway...they added some 4 minute tint in it while it was being washed to make it darker. Right not it is really light brown and I love it, however, my question is... Will that darkening tint be temporary? How long will it last, if at all? And will the real blonde start showing?!?!?!? I hope not!!

The tint might have been permenant because you got it done at a salon. But if you notice fading, I would buy a special hair conditioner for brown hair. Sunsilk and pantine make these products.

You just leave it in your hair for up to 5 min. in the shower, and rinse out. This is temporary color enhancment. You do it every 3 or 4 days.

good luck. :)

What is the difference between hair tinting and regular hair dying?

dying completely changes the color of your hair. tinting sort of "accents" your natural color with another one. not to be confused with highlighting, which puts streaks of another color throughout your hair

they are the same thing, just different names.

'tinting' was the original name for it, this has since been updated to all types of colour changes to simply 'colouring' your hair.

Tinting is a temporary thing.
Dye is more permanent.
Similar but not same.

tinting is an older term for what most call "dying". the proper term now would be coloring. Your not "dying" your hair because the products used by professionals today leave the hair just as healthy as your hair was to start with. Another term you may have heard is highlighting, or foiling. Some say streaking as well. They are all the same. Its a way to accent the hair with pieces of a different shade. Foiling is just a way to achieve highlights. Its using pieces of foil to create bigger and smaller pieces of accented hair. You can also use foiling to only highlight parts of the hair. Its alittle nicer than the cap method because you can chose where to accent your color. Cap method is a plastic cap placed over your hair and then small holes are poked through and pieces of hair are pulled through at random. This is great for short hair and if you don't care where your highlights end up.

When you dye your hair you are changing the color completely When your hair is tinted it is basically highlighted or streaked.

tinting is like.. making ur hair slightly lighter/or darker.. dying completely changes ur hair clr

What color dye is best for tinting dark hair?

I have very dark hair, and I want to tint (not dye -- I don't want to have to use bleach on my hair) it a blue color sometime soon. Would a lighter blue or a darker blue show up better in my hair?

use dark and it will come out light since you have dark hair trust me i have dark too and light dyes dont really show in my hair so defenatly the dark dye.

will tinting your hair have the same effect as a permanent hair dye? ?

well i have dyed my hair before several times, and it takes a while for it not to feel fried... and now i just want to tint it- probably red. does hair tint have the same effect?
if so is there a certain conditioner that will help with the straw-like feel?

Tinting your hair should not dry it out as much as permanent hair color but I wouldn't recommend using tint because you cannot color over tinted hair. You have to wait for it to completely grow out. You can't use permanent hair color over Henna, progressive dyes, or tints and you're not really supposed to use it over semi-permanent color either because of breakage and discoloration but I have done that one before. If you don't want the damaging effects of permanent hair color you can use a semi-permanent which will last you up to about 28 shampoos, or you can use a permanent with low or no ammonia. Ammonia is a big key to why your hair dries out. Also, try a reconditioning treatment for your dry hair and scalp: towel dry your hair and use a conditioner with no alcohol and if possible keratin in it, and especially concentrate on your ends! Wrap a hot towel over your head and sit for about 15 minutes. Then rinse with lukewarm water. You should feel a difference! =)

P.S. Red is the Hardest hair color to keep bc the color red has the largest molecules which makes it really hard for your hair to absorb and hold. So if all and all you decide to use tint, red will fade FAST.

hair tinting product best for dark hair?

Recently, I've been wanting to tint my hair; not dye. I want it to stay black, but have a tinted blue in the sunlight. So nothing bold or neon. But I don't know what brands are best for this on dark/black hair.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

There is a semi-permanent color out there called Jazzin, available at most beauty supply stores. It's sold in a bright pink bottle. They have an "indigo". Use that if you want a really really noticeable blue tint. Use the blue-black they have,( I forget the actual name, its their darkest color), if you want a tiny hint of blue. i Your hair will not turn blue since its only semi-permanent (they act as overlays). Any semi-permanent color can achieve this, but Jazzin gives your hair a nice gloss as well.

Try Pantene Midnight Expressions.

is there something like hair tinting shampoo that gradually dyes your hair darker?

and not brilliant brunette because i have light brown hair and i want dark brown and that doesnt really get the results i want

I've been wondering the EXACT same thing! I don't want a dye, but I want to deepen the color and add vibrance and shine.

You can try, but the results will only last a day or two. You should try the SimpleSexyHair color shampoo in the dark brown shade, it will deposit dark brown dye everytime you use it. Otherwise, you can try a color gloss that lasts about 8 shampoos or so, Sally Beauty sells the Clairol Pro color gloss.

What does tinting your hair mean?

Ok,I heard about tinting, but it is the same as dyeing your hair? or is highlighting?

thanxs!

Tinting your hair means to make your hair darker or lighter. Really its just dying/coloring your hair to a different color.

its darkening!!

tinting is "hair stylist" lingo for "coloring" or yes dyeing...

tinting is the British way of thinking and talking and that is the mother home of hair.
if you want the best in hair.....go to England they are light years ahead of us.

tinting black hair with special effects?

i have dyed black hair and would like to tint my hair to a reddish color. i have special effects atomic pink hair dye and when i used it on my blonde hair, it turned a reddish pink color. if i used this dye on my now black hair, would it give a nice tint to my hair? or would it be a waste of time and product?

What is the difference between hair color and hair tint?

I have previously lightened my hair a little bit and I have given it highlights. I am going to grow my hair out so that it is all my natural tone- brown.

Once my hair is back to its natural brown color, I want to add interest by giving it a little bit of a reddish tint. Should I look for mild hair color, or a tint? What is a "tint" anyway? I'm basically looking for a product that will give my hair a reddish tone but won't turn it completely red.

tint- lighter and darker

color- red, black, brown, blond, grey etc.....

How can I get hair tint out quicker?

I tinted my hair golden blonde, from white blonde and I hate it. IT's not permanent but i want to get the tint out as quick as possible. Any suggestions?

Use Color Fix. Products like Color Fix, Color Oops, and Haircolor Remover Kit can be purchased at most drugstores. Color Fix and Color Oops will remove hair dye, restoring hair to its natural color. Haircolor Remover Kit by L'Oreal will strip hair of all dye and prepare it for re-tinting so that you may dye it another shade. Read the packages carefully and choose which is best for you.
