Hot Home Products: Steamed heat smart way to clean yourhome.ca
Steam is a hot topic in home cleaning and fabric care these days, pushed as a green alternative to chemical cleaners, and a prudent choice for those sensitive to airborne contaminants.
It’s certainly easier on fabrics than direct heat from a dry iron, and using steam can refresh clothes and reduce the number of trips to the dry cleaner — one way to lessen your household’s chemical dependency.
Steam irons come at every price point, but Rowenta ( www.rowenta.ca ), a luxury European brand beloved by stylists, has launched the Pro Precision Steam Generator, a steam iron that sits atop of, and is connected to, a water tank. As with most steam appliances, tap water can be used unless your water has more than 12 parts per gallon of minerals or “hardness.” Check with your provider on this. In Toronto, it’s about 8.4 parts.
Steam can be controlled from, and dispensed in, either a horizontal or vertical direction, which makes it useful for refreshing draperies in place, furniture fabrics or hung garments. The very fussy will delight in running it over a freshly made bed for a hotel de luxe look.

Can I use generic hot tub chemicals in a softub?
I just bought a softub and can not wait to get in it. Ordering the special softchlor and softshock on line will take a while and be fairly expensive. Local stores carry hot-tub chemicals- can I use them?
Some of the regular hottub chemicals are too harsh for the soft tub and will dry and crack it.
What kind of chemical treatment should I use for a hot tub?
I recently bought a house that came with an outdoor hot tub. I've heard there are lots of different chemical treatments, but don't know what would be best. I wont use it a whole lot, and I don't really want the chemical vapors to be too overpowering. I'd also like it to be easily maintainable.
Hot tubs do require a bit of maintenance. It is suggested that you go to your nearest pool supply store where they will: test your water (usually free), recommend chemicals and give you a regimen of maintenance. What you need can be found at this website as well: http://www.hottubs2buy.co.uk/how_to_maintain.html
If the hot tub doesn't have a cover, I would highly recommend one. In periods of little or no use, the cover can reduce the amount of chemicals you require as well as helping to keep it clean. When we put a cover on our hot tub, the amount of chemicals we used dropped by about 1/3.
Good luck.
I use chlorine shock. Once a week, use a capful of the crystalline shock. When in use, shock after each use. Drain it every 3 months. Clean or replace the filter cartridge every 4 weeks. If you don't use more than a capful of the shock once a week, and wait until after you use it to shock it again there should be no overpowering vapors.

Can i put hot tub water on my lawn?
I will be draining my hot tub soon to clean it out and fill it up with fresh water. We haven't received much rain lately so I'd like to empty the hot tub onto my lawn but I don't know if the hot tub chemicals will harm the grass. Any thoughts?
Actually make sure your ph is as neutral as possible 7.4. Let the chlorine or bromine level drop. to less then 1.
If you are using Baquaspa or something similar then don't do it.
Next make sure you also use a shop vac to clear/blow out the 10 gallons of water still in your tub. Just in case the temp drops we do not want to hear about any crcked pumps or lines.
Hot tub chemicals - which do we really need?
Just got a new tub, it seems the dealer wants to sell a lot of chemicals (chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, ph+-) but the tub has an "ozonator" for disinfection so we are unsure which of the treatments we really need -- help!
Just got a new tub, it seems the dealer wants to sell a lot of chemicals (chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, ph+-) but the tub has an "ozonator" for disinfection so we are unsure which of the treatments we really need -- help!
We want minimal chemical treatments, which is why we bought the model with the "ozonator" box - supposedly a new disinfectant technology -- is anyone familiar with this?
I too just got a hot tub about two weeks ago and have an ozonator. My sales person has me using a mineral sanitizer from Zodiac that I just lay across my filter tray. With only a few of us using the hot tub all appears to be well. He did suggest that if I am going to have a lot of people to add a little chlorine, but said that the ozonator alone is not sufficient.
I have not used any chlorine and all appears to be well. I do use half a cap of a shock twice a week and have had to add some alkaline builder once.
Have fun with it....
Test chlorine levels to see if they fall between 3-5 mg/l (ppm) and dose according to the attached instructions on the Hot Tub Chorine container.
Test Hot tub PH levels to see if they fall between 7.2 and 7.6. If not within these parameters use Hot Tub pH Plus or Minis according to instructions.
If water is foaming use Hot Tub Anti Foam. (TIP - Dilute no foam according to instructions into spray bottle and spray onto surface of water [do not use bottle for any other purposes])
Weekly: Time: 10 minute.
Shock Hot tub with suitable oxidising agent such as Non chlorine shock or Calcium Hypochlorite.
Clean Filter using Hot Tub Filter Cleaner and swap with spare. (you should always have a spare filter as filters have to be allowed to dry first so that the fibres can bind together after cleaning).
Monthly: Time: 5 minutes.
If you live in an area with hard water (high Calcium) add Hot Tub Scale Remover.
Periodically (Once every 2 months): Time: 90 minutes.
Clean hot tub cover with week solution of chlorine (3-5mg/litre)
Replace hot tub filters (6 months - 1 year)
Change water
It is important to maintain the correct water balance to create the perfect conditions for you to relax in. We recommend that you follow the guide below in order to achieve this.
Calcium Hardness
It is important to achieve the correct level of calcium in your water, the levels of which will vary depending on where you live and where your water supply comes from. Soft water tends to be low in calcium and hard water tends to be higher. Every time you top up or refill your hot tub with fresh water you need to check levels of calcium.
The ideal calcium hardness level for a hot tub is between 100 -200mg/lIf the level in your hot tub is below this it could lead to corrosion damage. If you do find the level is low, then use Hot Tubs Hardness Plus to bring it up to the correct level. If the level in your hot tub is above this it can lead to the water appearing cloudy. As a result, calcium can be deposited on the tub shell, heater element, filter cartridge element and the pipe work within. To reduce this use Hot Tub No Scale to correct the level.
Total Alkalinity
This also depends on your water source and should be checked every time fresh water is added. The ideal Total Alkalinity for your hot tub is between 125 – 150mg/l If it stays between this it will prevent the pH of the water fluctuating. If the level falls below the recommend amount the water can become corrosive causing damage to the hot tub equipment. This being the case, we suggest using Hot Tub pH Plus to raise levels.
If the level is too high, the water can become poor in clarity and scale will form. To reduce this use Hot Tubs pH Minus.
pH Levels
It is essential you regularly check the pH of your hot tub water using Hot Tub Test Strips. The ideal pH range is between 7.4 -7.6, this is slightly alkaline which protects the hot tub and equipment. It also provides the most comfortable condition for hot tub users and has a good sanitising efficiency. If the pH level is below 7.4 use Hot Tub pH Plus to raise the level and if the pH level is above 7.6 use Hot Tubs pH Minus to reduce the level.
Sanitising
Sanitising of your hot tubs water is vital to kill bacteria and prevent algae growth. Levels should be checked regularly using Hot Tub Test Strips. You can use either Chlorine or Bromine to adjust the levels. Most people use Chlorine, preferring the smell to Bromine.
Bromine
Using Hot Tubs Bromine is a very effective hot tub sanitizer. It comes in tablet forms making it easy to apply to the water.
The ideal Bromine level is between 3 – 6mg/l
Chlorine
Using Hot Tubs Chlorine is another effective hot tub sanitizer. It comes in granule forms which dissolve very quickly in the hot tubs.
The ideal Chlorine level is between 3 – 5mg/l
Oxidising
We recommend that you oxidise your hot tubs monthly using Hot Tub Non Chlorine Shock. This destroys odours and other undesirable additions such as perspiration, cosmetics and body oils.
By doing this monthly it improves the comfort and hygiene for hot tubs users.
Hot Tub Speciality Products
Other products also help keep your hot tub clean, clear and enhance your bathing pleasure.
Control of Foam - Due to the circulation and aeration of hot tub water, foam can appear on the water surface which looks unsightly; this is caused by oils and lotions within the water. To reduce the foam use Hot Tub No Foam regularly to prevent and control foaming. If the problem of foam continues after using Hot Tub No Foam we recommend that you drain and refill with fresh water.
Cleaning your Hot Tub - At the waterline, grease and rubbish can build up that creates a line around the tub which provides an ideal ground for bacteria and algae to breed. To remove these lines easily and prevent them appearing use Hot Tub Water Line Cleaning Paste daily.
Hot Tub Water Line Cleaning Paste should also be used every time prior to refilling.
Cleaning the Filter Cartridge - You will be able to tell when the filter needs cleaning as the circulation within the hot tub will be reduced and the water cleanliness will change. To avoid the inconvenience of the filter not working we recommend that it should be cleaned at monthly intervals or more if you use your hot tub heavily. Hot Tub Cartridge Cleaner helps clean and restores filters to their full efficiency.
Fragrances
It always a nice touch to add a fragrance to your hot tub water but never use bath fragrance as this will create foam which is not good for your tub. Only ever use Hot Tub Fragrances that have been designed for use in Hot Tubs. Our Online shop sells a wide range of fragrance.

Another thing, eventually your tub's pipes can build up icky stuff that the chemicals can't get to. Every year or so put in a cleaner...I'm thinking it's Swirl Away for jetted tubs and hottubs, run it for about 15 minutes thru the pipes and then drain and clean the tub.
How can I raise the Ph in my hot tub without commercial chemicals?
I have a hot tub and everytime I test the water the Ph if very low. The chemical to bring the Ph up is very expensive. Does anyone know of a product I can use to raise the Ph- perhaps something commonly found in the home that would be safe to put in a hot tub. Please - serious answers only.
Invite a bunch of kids into your hottub, they should raise the PH level! jk
"sodium bicarbonate or baking soda raises the kH and pH as mentioned by Goldy. As mentioned, at low pH, the good bugs do not thrive well and the filtration suffers. A pH level between 7.0 to 8.0 would be good. pH should not be raised suddenly to prevent pH shock. Therefore baking soda should be added little by little over a few days. A dosage of 25-50g per 1000L per day until the desired pH is achieved should be OK. As it is easily soluble in water, dissolve it in a pail of water and distribute evenly over the pond. It may need to be replenished after sometime depending on the stocking level as it is being used up by the filter. A more permanent solution of maintaining alkaline pH is to use shells (oyster, cockle) as pH buffers. They act by releasing carbonates slowly.
If the ammonia level in the pond is very low, there shouldn't be much danger in raising the pH slightly. As for the location of the UV, I would prefer to place it at the last stage of filtration, that is after the biomedia, and in a separate chamber."
So, raising the Ph is more acid or more base?
Add acidic things, maybe lemon juice or vinegar
or Add base things like soap, dish cleaner
Add a little, test the Ph, the adjust as needed, but test often and always be sure the Ph is right BEFORE you go in.
The problem with the non-commercial stuff is sometimes it takes a lot to get the job done and it may cost more in the long run.
wait, this is a hot tub? Drain it and re fill!
Oven cleaners that are primarily NaOH
Antacid tablets (mostly CaCO2)
These are all "basic" compounds which will raise the pH of water. I wouldn't use the oven cleaner because of possibly affecting you or your tub, but the baking soda should be safe.
You could also go to a garden store and get big bags of lime. Again, I don't know if that is approved for your hot-tup filter, pump, etc but it is pretty benign and will definately raise the pH.
My limited knowldege of this comes from keeping freshwater aquariums. If you try the baking soda, test it out in small quanties first. It might just make your water really hard and not that much higher in ph. But it might be worth a shot.
Acids have low PH's, like 1-6, water is neutral (7), and bases have high PH's, like 8-14. The PH scale ranges from 1-14. The poster wants to make it higher, meaning the water is too acidic. You could add things like baking soda or lye.
Hot Tub Chemicals?
I have been having problems with my hot tub for a while now. The water seems to stay cloudy and now it has a green tint to it. Also it gets a almost tan colored foam on it when we use it. What would be the best chemical to use in it? We have been using the BaquaSpa stuff with nothing but problems. Would it be better to use Bromine or Chlorine? Also we have a ozonator on the tub but all that it seems to be is a bubble pump. I can not tell a difference when it is on or off. Should it be used and does it really do anything?

Above are three of my favorite Hot Tub advice sites. I've used them and also my local dealer is very helpful when I've taken a water sample in.
I use Chlorine and I've been happy with the results. Occasionally, I add Clarifyer, Foam Reducer, and Scale Eliminator. Twice I've had to adjust the PH and alkalinity. Simple test strips is all I need to monitor the tub's needs.
I now have "city" water, which makes managing the tub much easier. Previously, my well water required much more monitoring, and I found myself doing a complete water change more often than recommended, which is typically 3 months, depending on use. Also, make sure you are cleaning your filters regularly. There is an acid solution you can soak them in which makes them like new.
P.S. the foam is caused by YOUR body oils and skin products like shampoos, lotions, deodorants, etc. It is not the water causing it. That is where the Defoamer works. Only takes a few drops.
Let me know if I've helped.
Don't you just love the spa?
It sounds like you have green and brown algae in the hot tub.
What brand of chemical do you use in your hot tub?
The brand I use gets more expensive every time I buy it, and can only be found in a specialty store, please help.
I get mine at Leslie's swimming pool supply, it's their house brand.
If there's no swimming pool supply in your area, look on line, there are many companies selling chemicals.
If you are using a specific type, not the usual bromine/chlorine, then yes, you might be having trouble with supply.
fish tank and hot tub chemicals?
i was wondering if you can use hot tub chemicals in a fish tank. it was my grandpa's idea and i told him he was crazy. i have to prove you can't. he wants to use ph increaser, alkalinity increaser, and hardness decreaser. i don't know if all these chemicals exist for hot tubs though. please help me with ways to keep the tank stable. thnx
None of the chemicals you mentioned are really of use for a fish tank anyway. Those are things fish adapt to quite easily. More important is a test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Do people realize that they sit in chemical soup while sitting in a hot tub or spa?
I am looking for products that are safe for my health and environment. I purchased a hot tub...without doing homework first. I recently checked out the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for the chemicals used. I sit in chemical soup. The chemicals used can cause lung cancer, etc.... I have fibromyalgia and found that I had no pain while sitting in my hot tub. No longer...I am too uncomfortable thinking that I am sitting in chemical soup. Can anyone help me find safe products?
If you weren't sitting in a chemical soup, you would be sitting in a biological soup. Take your pick.
What chemical(s) or cleaning agent(s) work best when cleaning the tub portion of a hot tub?
I figure there isn't much I can't or shouldn't use seeing as the thing is routinely filled with chlorinated water.
Just curious if anyone has recommendations for better-than-the-other cleaners ..
Thanks.
The tub color is white and not especially dirty to begin with. The tub has not been used for 2-3 years but was covered most of that time.
Hay, If you have not tried a soap scum remover for bathtubs, you may want to try that! The works is pretty good, or check with Lowe's or Home Depot for one! Also the Dollar General Store sell Awesome, and it is Awesome! Hope this helps for You!
