How To Maintain a Hot Tub : Basic Hot Tub Wiring

Wire a hot tub in this free hot tub maintenance video. Expert: Bart Plante Contact: www.bullfrogspas.com Bio: Bart Plante is the Technical ...

Is planning permission required to construct an outhouse for a hot tub and can a mains water supply be used?

And do the new CDM Regs apply?

If the building is overlooking someone elses property you may have problems when you come to build for example neighbours may complain to the authority, but you shouldn't need planning for this if its not enclosed, as it may just be considered a shed.
Otherwise best to check with your local planning depart. they can usually tell you straight over the phone. But i doubt that you will do, especially if its not on any boundary, overlooking or obstructing anyones light or view you shouldn't have a problem. I dont think it comes into that percentage rule due to it not being attached to the house and its on your land.
Hope this helps!

You probably will need planning permission, unless the outhouse is like a garden shed.

Be careful with hot tubs. They can be a source of Legionnaires disease if not handled properly.

It all depends on where you live and the planing authority

It depends on a number of issues. 1. Permitted development. you are allowed to extend you rproperty(incl sheds/garages) by 25% of the total size. i think(some coucils may vary)
Is the structure to be temporary? if this is the case you may be ok(hence the amount of conservatories around the place)
The easiest way forward is to contact your local authority( all www.council.gov.uk)

I have a hot tub and a out house, i have not had to get planning. as you will need a seperate mains supply, that will have to be fitted by a qualified electrician. mains cold water is ok, but it will take an age to heat up, when i have re filled min i have used the hot water tap from the combi boiler, gas heater water is cheaper than the electric heater on the tub. Enjoy we do especially with a bottle of bubbly and a clear night looking at the stars

how do I clean an older hot tub ?

I have an old hot tub that I'm refurbing I guess. I was wondering what is the best way to remove the scale deposits ? I bought a cleaner from a pool supply store but it barely touched it. I lived with a surfer pool guy and we acquired an old spa and we wet sanded the interior to clean it up a bit and it seem to do a good job and the tub didn't have a glossy finish anyway. is this adviseable? anyone have a good suggestion?

Use "The Works" Calcium, lime, iron remover. I swear you will freak when u see the stains melt off the side of the tub. Works great and being you said it's not glossy..It shouldn't ruin the finish then. Try it on a small area if not sure. I guaranteed it will clean any kind of water deposit stain.
I get it from Menard's in the cleaning supply section. Good Luck

well use clorox to help it clean it!!!!!!!!!!!!

it is true, "the works" is a really incredible cleaner, just keep in mind that more than half of the back label is devoted to safety warnings. after using it be sure to thoroughly!!! rinse your hot tub. I think you can also get it at walmart.

Oven cleaners do a very good job, if you dont mind hurting the none existing glossy finish. It's probably hard to clean because the glossy finish is rubed off. And it's going to get dirty much faster, so you'l probably have to wash it often.

Are the chlorinating granules the same for a hot tub and a pool?

I have a hot tub and it seems you can not find the chlorinating suppiles as well as the other supplies needed in larger amounts so it seems I am always runng out,I was thinking if the supplies are the same I would just purchase lhe larger supplies provided for pool use to use in my HT.

As far as I know they are the same. Just make sure you use right amount. As long as they don't say NOT FOR SPA USE. I buy one inch chlorine tablets for my spa from the pool supply section of the store.
Pool chemicals are also a lot cheaper. The pH levelers and such may be different because of the water temp. Just check ingredients on anything you want to switch.
If the spa is under warranty, they may not cover repairs if you don't use specific chemicals. So you may want to check into that also.

Dismantling hot tub?

I bought a house that have an old fiberglass hot tub/or spa in the backyard .(30 +years old) .
I want to have an idea of how much will cost me to have someone to take it out, have electricity, gas and water supplies disconnected, the pump and the other stuff (heather, motor, etc) out and take everything to the dump, including the wood from the deck. (I already removed all the deck and wood frame)

We just had a in-ground fiberglass jacuzzi removed a few weeks ago. It was gas-heated. There was a brick surround which is a few inches above the concrete patio slab. The heater and pump was located approximately 15 feet from the jacuzzi.

Everything was removed and isolated. The hole was filled with gravel and dirt before being covered by concrete and matching bricks. It looks like a jacuzzi was never installed.

The cost to performa all of this work including dumping the removed equipment was about $800. This is a good price for southern california area given the quality of work. The contractor is a small 2-man operation.

Good Luck!

Can I use our hot tub while breastfeeding?

I had a baby 2 1/2 months ago. My back has been aching and I would like to use our hot tub. (I haven't used it since before I was pregnant). Can I use our hot tub while breastfeeding? Will this affect my milk or my supply?
whoops, my wording was a little off... I don't plan on breastfeeding the baby while in the hot tub. I simply wanted to know if I could use the hot tub without affecting my milk supply. Thanks for all the great answers!

if you use a hot tub while breastfeeding make sure you keep the baby's head above water. and also they really shouldn't go in the water until half an hour AFTER they eat

I always went in the spa while breastfeeding and never had any problems.

Shouldn't affect anything as long as you aren't in there too long.... Hope your back gets better!

I won't affect the milk, it might actually help your supply and will definitely relax you. I say go for it, but obviously don't bring the baby in there :)

The worst thing that will happen is you'll get milk in your water. Warm water sometimes causes the breasts to leak.

As long as you keep baby's face out of the water, it's fine!

Lest you think I'm just being silly, I really have nursed my baby in a hot tub. If baby's in with you, keep the temperature below 100, but if baby's not, then go with your comfort.

Do remember to keep especially well hydrated, though.

I know when my wife was breast feeding she had clots in her breast a few times and when she would take a hot bath it would help clear it out. (to help prevent infection) So my guess is if you go into a hot tub you will find your milk starting to flow from your breast.

Be sure that you wash your self before feeding. Spa have all kind of nasty in the water///

A hot tub doesn't affect your milk supply.

Gereld has a good point. Wash afterwards!

It should be ok while breastfeeding. Please dont take your baby in there.. it is to warm if it is going to do your aching back any good.....

60amp GFCI for Hot Tub?

Anyone know where I can find a 60 amp GFCI for my Hot tub. I have tried hardward store, Pool & Spa sotres and numerous electrical supply. The problem is that most are rated for 10hp, and my spa has 3-6hp motors (18hp). I have burned through 2 Conneticut electric spa gfci panels in the last 6 months. at $100.00 a pop, it is getting expensive. I keep getting the run around. Anyone have any ideas?
Have tried Lowes and Home Depot. Their electrical people were clueless. No separate plugs, just a separate direct 220 line. So far I keep getting the run around from electrical supply places that don't get back to me.
Out here Sundance Spas are sold by Paddock Pools. I tried them, they do not carry gfci's for spas.

Siemens has a 60 amp GFI that we use to sell when we were a Sundance Spa dealership. Go find your nearest Sundance Spa Dealership.

http://www.hydrospa.com/parts/gfci_breakers.html it's near the bottom of the page. Hydrospa is now owned by Infinity Spas. This is a very reliable GFI. I would like to know what tub you have. Model/brand. and what spa pack and motors are in it.

you mean a circuit breaker. try electrical warehouse

Looks like you are a whole lot lite on the amperage. Roughly 18 Hp would equal 13428 watts divided by 240V would equal 55.95 amps. You then have to add your the heaters of your Hot tub and any auxiliary electrical you would have. Your tub should have the correct size breaker listed somewhere. You might then find the correct size at Lowe's or Home Depot. Find someone knowledgeable in the store to look it up for you as they will probably have to order it...

break it up, does each motor have it's own plug? If you can run a separate line for each motor, and if you have a heater that has to be on it's own circut. You can use gfi recepts. with regular 20 amp breakers, one for each motor.

Based on the information you supplied, break each one of the motors down to a separate circuit. Many spa paks with 11 kw heaters come with 60 amp GFI but the motors are only about 1.5 to 2 hp tops.

Burning out a breaker that often is a shear sign an electrical danger is present and I would suggest a licensed electrician. Breakers are to protect the user and would be a good idea to heed the warning they giving you.

A drastic spike in amperage is inevitable at startup. Ten second delay switches would also be a solution during startup time. This would give the break relief. The LRA rating on the motor will give you a good idea if you are under sized. A properly sized breaker will handle a spike of 10% of the breakers rating at maximum. Anything higher and it will trip.

Burning out a GFI breaker is not a leak to ground causing it to trip but too much amperage being drawn through it. One other item you should look at is the wiring size to the motors from the main panel. Undersized wiring can cause an amperage increase.

How to repair a severed electrical cord for hot tub?

I was given a used hot tub, but the electrical cord was cut to remove it. So there is no "plug" at the end of the cord, just a cut end. I assume that the elecritc was wired directly to the hotub, and when they removed it, they just cut the electrical cord.

I would like to just see if the hot tub works (have spa-repair man come over), before I run all the electric to it. But I cant plug it in for the repair man to check it out. As a cheap temporary hookup, just so it can be checked to see if it works, can I splice a 220-plug (kind for a dryer) on the end of the cut-cord, and plug it into where my dryer is? ...Just to check the motor, make sure the jets work, before i spend the $ to insall all the permanent electric. Do hot tubs and dryers use the same type of elecrical outlet (220, or whatever?)?. Can I splice a temproary plug to the severed cord, and plug into dryer outlet.

(Let me say that I know nothing about electrical home improvements. So please supply as much info in you responses as you can.)

most hot tubs run on a 60 amp gfi protected circuit, thus meaning unless you have a way to access this much power,[the only thing in a residential setting that takes this much power is a heat pump, the next thing is an oven circuit} your dryer circuit will not be sufficiant enough for this application} it will be real hard to test, most electricians charge anywhere from 500 to 1000 dollars to hook up the hot tub, you might as welll have it hooked up , and then if it doesnt work then youll just have to get another one.

call a repairman its to dangerous.

If they cut it off, it was probably hard wired, so if you need to ask, you should either hire a pro or ask somone you trust to know how to check it out. Water, electricity and ?????? is a very dangerous combo. Good luck.

Explain the situation to the spa-repair man before he comes out and listen to his advice. If you are uncertain about electricity, it is better left to a professional.

Which is better to use in hot tubs: Chlorine or Bromine? why?

We've had our tub for about a year and have always used bromine because the store where we purchase supplies really pushes it over/instead of chlorine.

As Susan suggested, you can use ozone with an electrically powered ozonator. As for your question, Bromine is healthier than Chlorine. It is less reative chemically. It will take more Bromine to do the job of killing bacteria, but it is better for you. Healthier still, would be Iodine, followed by Antimony. It's all in the periodic table of elements.

If cordially invited to attend the "Yahoo Hot-tuba-palooza" party, would you accept?

It's a hot tub party for 250 people. There are no rules or regulations. We are all adults, but in the event you get into an uncomfortable situation, the safety word is: "Creamed Corn". When spoken, all immediate activity to brought to an end.

Clothing is optional, but you must bring a plate to pass and a beverage to share.

What are you bringing?

Me: Clams casino for 1000, and supplies for Jaeger-bombs

im bringing "CREAMED CORN"

....dang i just ended your party...sorry.....lol...jk

Shower Water Supply Plumbing?

I need to replace my mom's old shower water supply plumbing. She has a tub/shower combination, and I need to replace the one part that acts as
The hot/cold water faucets
The nozzle that fills the tub
The handle that changes to /from shower/tub
This is all one unit, the pipes are old metal pipes, and there is no shut offs. Note, the plumbing is old also and I want to go ahead and replace it with plastic pipe

I am looking for an easy to follow diagram of how the plumbing needs to look.

S
|
H---------V------------C
|
|------D

S is for shower head connected to elbow 1/2" slip X 1/2" FIP
H is for hot supply, facing valve, entering from the left. 1/2" slip X MIP.
C is for cold suply, facing valve, entering from right. 1/2" slip X MIP.
D is for diverter, outlet is at 6:00 position on valve. Drop 6" and 90 out, then trim with diverter spout.
V is for pressure compensated, single handle mixing valve. Lever operated is best, easy to clean and easy to operate.

Use CPVC pipe 1/2" only. Do not use glue - keep it simple with SharkBite push-on fittings that we plumbers just love for jobs like this. Make sure existing pipe is clean and clear of burrs, prepare with fine grit sand paper.

You will need a mini-tubing cutter to cut pipe clean and square for proper fit to fittings.

This looks simple, sounds simple, but it really is not if it is your first time. The potential to flood your home is high so when in doubt, hire a professional.

Yahoo is not diagram friendly, oh well.

Shower connection to shower elbow is 12:00
Hot is 9:00
Cold is 3:00
Diverter connection to spout elbow is 6:00
