Fact Finders Segment on dangers or laser hair removal and what to look out for when selecting an establishment to perform the procedure.

I would like laser hair removal on my face. Does anyone know about this?

I'm 43, and I've had a bad problem with lip and chin hair for about 8 years now.........and I'm noticing the hair along my cheeks seems a thicker peach fuzz blonde than it used to be.......although the hair on my lip and chin is definitely dark brown.

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting my whole face hair laser removal.....lip, chin, cheeks

I've called a few places, and most say that they would have no problem using the laser on my lip and chin......but they might have problems with the blonde peach fuzz hair on my cheeks and sideburn area.

Also, most places are quoting around $750 for lip and chin, and way over $1000 for all of it.

What do you all think? Also, are there any risks with laser removal?

My wife's aunt is a dermatologist and had this done for free. She never would have had paid for it if it wasnt' for her aunt. But knowing what she knows now, my wife would have paid for it in a SECOND! The results were outstanding and permanent (3 years so far)

It works…it REALLY works. Keep in mind it will take AT LEAST two treatments, maybe even three or four depending on your hair, the area, and thickness.

Also, find a reputable dermatologist. There are very minimal risks involved, but lot of fly by night companies are doing these procedures. The risks are amplified if you go with someone that doesn’t know what they are doing. You can end up with scars and burns if you go with an amateur . You shouldn’t worry about this with a true MD. If it is an MD find out how long they have been doing it.

I don’t know how it works, but the laser only “zaps” dark colors. Non-caucasians (Latinas, blacks, or other dark skinned people) may have to go through more treatments. The laser will have to be turned down as to not burn the darker skin. Some very dark skinned individuals may not be able to have the procedure done.

The $750 - $1000 sounds inline with what you should pay for TOTAL removal…ie multiple sessions. That sounds pretty high for a single session.

You should expect lots of red splotches and some light to moderate swelling in the treated areas for a few days. So if you have your upper lip done people at work will know you had something done the next day. It look kind of like a fresh waxing times two or three. I don’t think it is anything to be ashamed of. But if you are self-conscious about this you may want to have the procedure done on a Thurs or Friday and take a day or two off of work.

It can be a little painful in some places. Not severe, but you will feel a little something.

Hope that helps!

YES do it...its fantastic.... had legs done..awesome!! eyebrows too.... if it bothers you that much, do it! your face is your beauty, you want to always look beautiful! good luck!!!

It's amazing. I would suggest going to your dermatologist and seeing if your insurance will cover it. I've had friends that have had it covered... It works well, after each time, the hair gros back slower, and thinner, until eventually it doesn't grow back. No known risks, except a wee bit of pain...like a rubber band snapping.

What are the best home laser hair removal products on the market?

I'm currently looking into buying a Rio Salon Laser LAHR hair removal set which retails for approx ~ $120 online - this only removes one hair at a time but appears to be effective for most people. Are there any other similar *laser* products in this price range that offer multiple-hair removal capabilities? If you speak from personal experience, it's all the better! Thanks!

Okay, if i were you i wouldn't even think of LaserHairRemoval! As I watched on TV on Tyra, This girl had a laser hair removal on her stomach and it just burned . And then this other girl was just going to remove her facial hair, it burned her skin too! Now they are left with scars for the rest of their lives!

Try waxing, or deplitory.

I would do research first before you write that check or give your credit number. Be careful of scams

The Rio laser is the only approved laser hair removal kit available to my knowledge. It is manufactured by a long standing U.K company and has passed all safety tests.

The Rio laser uses a safe 808nm diverging diode laser system. It is not as powerful as a salon laser and requires more treatments, but then again it is a fraction of the cost!

There are many horror stories out there, most of which are based on very old laser systems that are no longer used.

What to do before laser hair removal appointment?

Ok, I have an appointment Friday for some laser hair removal. Am I supposed to shave my legs like normal, or am I supposed to leave some stubble so the laser has something to zap at. I don't want to show up unprepared either way. Thanks for the help!

I am getting it done also for the first time next Tuesday - and they told me to shave. They even said if I don't - that's fine, they'll shave it for me!!

Sounds gross - but I guess that means that it should be smooth. It isn't the actual hair that the lazer zaps - its the pigment of the hair that it detects.

Anyway - hope it works for you!

Has anyone ever had laser hair removal? Does it hurt at all?

I hate shaving and was thinking of laser removal. Are there any really good ways to remove hair forever without pain? Does laser really work? I have dark dark hair.

Laser hair removal has actually been surpassed by IPL hair removal (in Australia - that is). As a Laser Aesthetician I have used and experienced both. I have dark hair and olive skin. I did have some hypopigmentation from the Ruby Laser but it resolved. I have had no side effects from the IPL and all my hair has gone.... legs, underarms, bikini. It's wonderful, not having to worry about it anymore. Both laser and IPL are attracted to the melanin in the hair and only goes as deep as the hair root.It is not invasive at all and feels like a slight rubber band flicking the skin. It doesn't cause cancer !!!! Either way it will take several treatments to be hair free.

I haven't had laser hair removal, but I was considering it as well...haven't made my decision yet. However, while I was doing research, I found out that there are several types of lasers and each of these affects you differently. Some of them can actually cause darkening of the skin if you have darker skin, etc. So make sure you do your research first before deciding. Also, find out which type of laser the place you're thinking of uses and read up on it. Maybe consult a dermatologist too...

well its a bad idea because it can cause cancer!! i got my upper hair liped removed from burning process it put a needle in y our numb sking and burns the hair of wen u do it 2 times u dont get hair as much anymore!!

It hurts. Little worse than getting a tattoo.

There aren't any needles involved in laser hair removal. That's called electrolysis (spelling?), that was the old way of permanently removing hair.

How short does your hair need to be for laser hair removal to be effective?

I want to get laser hair removal done on my sideburns. They're longer than I like. The top half is made up of thick hairs, but the bottom half is made up of short, thin hairs. Before I get the laser done, do I have to shave off the short, thin hairs? I'm afraid that they will grow back thick and noticable.

when i went to get laser hair removal on my underarms, they told me that i had to have shaven the area within twenty four hours of the procedure. where ever you're getting it done you should ask if they think the laser hair removal will work on the short thin hairs you have under your sideburns because i heard it doesn't work on hair that's almost like peach fuzz.

The technician doing the procedure should trim the hair if it's needed.

you have to shave. Here is a great article that gives a first hand account of and completely describes the laser hair removal process. I think this will help to answer your question. ENJOY!

I think your best bet is to contact a doctor or clinic that does laser hair removal and ask them.

How does one become a licensed laser hair removal specialist?

I am in Washington state - not sure if that makes a difference. I can find all kinds of beauty schools offering training for the removal of hair via waxing, however, I cannot find anything offering training for laser hair removal.

Go to the attached site. Some of the providers listed offer training schools. Just call the number, 888.517.4187, ask for Doug and ask him to get you a list of which providers offer certification.

Good luck.

What type of laser hair removal machines have better results?

When shopping for laser clinics such as Dermacare, what are the types of laser machine should I look for? I am not sure what are the differences between LightSheer XC and Gentle Lase or any other laser machines used. Does anyone know what should I be looking for when shopping for laser hair removal clinics in terms of equipment used?

Thanks

Alexandrite - GentleLase, LighSheer - Diode, are very similar machines and will work well if you have light skin and dark hair. There are some knew systems out there if you have darker skin or light hair that you are trying to treat. The attached site has information on different types of equipment.

There are also do-it-yourself laser hair removal kits available. The Rio uses a safe 808nm diverging diode laser and can target up to 20 hairs at a time. There is also a cheaper version that can target single hairs only.

Home laser machines are not as powerful as salon lasers so they will take longer to kill hair follicles, but they definitely do work. Furthermore, the cost saving is huge...

The Rio is manufactured by a U.K company and it has carried out extensive clinical trials to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the system.

How soon after having laser ipl hair removal is it safe to have microdermabrasion done on my face?

I have had ipl laser hair removal done on my face. However, I am also keen to have some microdermabrasion done to reduce my acne scars. I am wondering what gap to leave inbetween having these two treatments?

should be 24 hours, but check with the spa first. so find the spa first and then ask them, it depends on how particular the person is, but no more than 72 hours tops

How much does a brazilian laser hair removal cost?

I was thinking about laser hair removal- brazilian. ANybody have any idea how much it will cost in the eastern states? Or anywhere. I just need a range. And is it per treatment?

Probably around $200-300 per Tx and you will need 4-6 treatments. Make sure you go to someone qualifed. The site http://www.HairRemovalForum.com has a directory of certified providers. You can also call 888.517.4187 for pricing from multiple providers on the East coast.

What is the average cost of laser hair removal?

Specifically laser hair removal on the upper lip and chin area for women? What is the average cost for multiple treatments that will give guaranteed results, and how effective and reliable is laser hair removal?

I received laser hair removal on my bikini area at American Laser Centers which guarantees "no hair" after 6 treatments spread over about a year. I am very pleased with my results (i have had 5 out of the 6 treatments). I recently got a quote for my upper lip and they quoted me $450 total which includes the 2 yr guarantee. I know that particular place offers different promotions each month so the cost may vary. I definitely think that it's worth it.
