How can I make my Men's Hair Salon different than others ?

I want to establish my own Men's Hair Salon (hairdressing), and I have already studied the 4 P's carefully.

However, I like to listen to other people's opinions and advice, and always welcome new and creative ideas to make my business different.

Offer things that appeal to men like old fashioned face shaves. Have tvs for each chair with local sports channels. Some men wouldnt mind having a beer while they get their haircut.

How does a guy know if a hair salon actually welcomes men?

If a salon does not say "MEN and women" welcome nor "unisex" anywhere in or outside the salon, I would be quick to assume one of 2 things:
1.) The salon is Politically Correct and finds it unnecessary and/or wrong to post any exceptions and instead welcome anyone with a heartbeat inside.
2.) The ownership of the salon deems it an assumed notion that salons could still be inherently feminine, even if they could theoretically feel it is 51% so, and if that is not the case, they could easily make it very feminine and not want men in it at all, hence only a place for women and children.

I ask b/c I am about to leave a salon for I feel that I really should not be there. The stylist that works on my hair is as nice as they come, she does a great job, is the co-owner, and is just a pal, but I NEVER see any men in the place.

Also for a guy, what do you think is the proper terminology for "the girl who cuts my hair?" Terms like "hairdresser" or "stylist" just doesn't fly. Thx all!

I have only ever worked in one salon that was not really 'man friendly', but that is really an oddity these days. Most salons are unisex, even if they don't advertise as such. The reason for this is that 'Barbering' and 'Hairstyling' have become one. It used to be that there were barbers just for doing mens hair, and hairstylists just for women, and they were even taught at different schools. These days, not only are they both taught at the same place, but they are both taught to every one who is in cosmetology school. After leaving cosmetology school, I had a diploma in both barbering, and hairstyling. At least that is the way it is here in Canada, but I think for the most part it has become that way in most of the world. And as for your last question, I really don't think there are any other options other than hairdresser, stylist, or 'the girl that cuts my hair' all of my male clients refer to me as one of these things, and I have never really thought that men would want to call it anything else, but if these terms make you uncomfortable, I am sure that there are many stylists like me that have a large amout of male clientele, that don't mind being refered to as a barber, while cutting mens hair, that is essentially what we are.

Your first mistake was going to a hair salon rather than a barber. Find yourself a good barbershop with a lot of regulars; you want a place where there's a lot of conversation, where people come in and ask for "Jimmy".

Really, a barber shop is the only place for a man to get a haircut. Going to a hair-salon for a guy's cut is like taking a Ford vehicle to a Honda mechanic. A good barber will give you a cut that's a lot more professional and mature than a hair-stylist will. As for your last question, "barber", always. Even if she's a woman.

Its called stylist if the haircut costs you more than $20 and a guy can go to ANY salon. The simple fact is that most men probably just go to a barber because it appears to be more "manly" but there is nothing at all wrong for a guy to go to a salon and it doesn't make you look fem either, it just mean (to me) that you know how to really take care of yourself in style. :)

what matters is not the sign on the door but how you feel when you come and go for your cuts. If you are uncomfortable from start to finish so is your barber. I can totally understand your feeling uncomfortable. I worked in barbershops and the guys love it, and i've worked in spas and i see the difference in the men. I find that as a professional in order to make my male clients feel wanted and comfortable its good to always know who they are first. Greet them even if your with another client, as a barber ans cosmetologist i will excuss from one client to go give "Adam" a good hand shake and hug. He now feels noticed and welcome and it shows everyone that he is MY client and he is ALWAYS welcome. Most of my clients refer to me by name, ever to friends and family. I'm proud to be a stylist and a barber so as long as you don't call me a bad name i'm happy. You stated you feel you really should not be there. To me this means your either not really excited about your cut when you get home, OR you don't feel "at home". The flowers and girlie mags are not your thing right? Anyone offer you a coffee when you walk in? These are things that we offer women but alot of times we forget the guys because we think, oh its a quick cut i can fit him betewwen others. Essentially making you feel less important, right? NO client should ever feel they don't belong in my salon or my chair. I think maybe you should take a look around your area and explore.

My friend works at a hair salon as a saturday girl and sometimes this man comes in with hair only around the side of his head and compeltely bald ontop and she never knows what to do with him. Does he want her to wash his bald head? Or just the hair?

He really doen't care what she does.....He's only going there because he has a crush on her and wants her to rub his head!

I've had the same stupid hair cut for 12 years now. I'm normally the type of guy who just goes to a supercuts, but I need someone who will be able to tell me what will look good and do something new. Any thoughts? San Francisco or East Bay would be best.

Jessica @ Joe Hamer Beyond Hair in Petaluma is a great stylist. She has lots of satisfied male clients! Joe Hamer also has a salon in SF, and I'm sure you could get a great cut there too.
