Massage site deals with gift certificate fallout Columbia Daily Tribune

Some former customers of a massage studio that closed last month say they have been unable to redeem their gift certificates after being referred to a business that never agreed to honor them.

Del Sol Healing Arts, formerly located at 1505 Chapel Hill Road, sent an email to its customers Sept. 2 telling them it was closing. It referred anyone with unused gift certificates or massage packages to Moon Valley Massage Therapy.

But the partners in Moon Valley say they never reached an agreement with the former owner of Del Sol, Lezlie David. She contacted them asking if they would be willing to take over her unredeemed gift certificates in exchange for her client list, they say, and they said they would think about it. But then David sent out the email, and Street Talk reported it.

“Before we really had a chance to even discuss what was going on, we started getting phone calls and e-mails,” said Esther Bennett of Moon Valley. “She made the decision without us really saying for sure, ‘Yeah, we’re on board with this.’ ”

Suggestions for getting massage gift certificate?

I've been trying for over a month to get a massage gift certificate for a good friend from the IPSB massage center in San Diego:
http://www.ipsb.edu/About%20IPSB.html

Unfortunately, I live very far away, and IPSB doesn't mail out the certificate or take a credit card over the phone. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Phone: 858-490-1154
Call them.
Maybe they can just take a reservation over the phone for your friend.
Or get one from somewhere else. In SD, you can try the Aviara the spa at La Costa or a day at Glen Ivy Day spa.

Why not purchase US dollars and mail it to her in a moneyholder card - Inside the card, you can write down that you have made an appointment for her at the IPSB.

Otherwise, why does it have to be IPSB? There are plenty of spas that offer massage services - they will certainly send out a certificate and use your credit card info over the phone. A lot of times, when you buy a gift service from a spa, the price includes gratuity as well so your friend will not have to worry about anything. Just do a google search for a spa in her area.

I'll bet that if you call them and ask if you can mail them a postal money order along with a self-addressed stamped envelope, they would accomodate you by dropping the gift certificate in the envelope you provided them and mailing it.

Need a nice place to get a massage gift certificate for my boyfriend for Valentines day.?

We live in the Northern burbs of Chicago and I'd love to find a nice decent place that isn't geared for woman and is not pretentious. Preferable in the north burbs...Please give a few suggestions...Thanks!

PS - No Elizabeth Arden or Mario Tricoci please. Both, in my opinion are over priced, and too snobbish.

Honey, get the phone book out and look for places in your area that offer the services you need. Or use the internet, white pages, to find a decent place that fits your needs. depending on the sites, the places are rated and you can see for yourself the customer comments. Or buy your man some silk boxers and message oil and give him a "rub-down" and more he will never forget!

Buying a tantric massage gift certificate for my grandmother - how long of a session should I buy for?

I'd go for at least a few hours. She's a pretty spunky gal, right? Make sure you have my favorite masseuse Felipe do this for her. Here's a pic of him.. I guarantee she'll LOVE him!

Jil! Quit posting those hawt links when my kids are in the room!

It doesn't matter, just make sure you pay extra for the happy ending.

giving or receiving a massage gift certificate.. tip included ?

if i give a gift of a massage gift certificate is the person im giving it to supposed to give a tip ? i cant imagine getting a 100 dollar gift certificate for a massage and then be expectied to give a 10 or 15 dollar tip this no longer makes it a gift. especially for a person who would never afford such a luxory.

I disagree. You should tip your massage person at least 15%! How many one-hour professional massages do you know of that go for a mere $15.00?! It's still a GREAT gift, so don't be cheap and cough up the lousy tip!

Good question. I hadn't thought of that. My husband and I received a couples massage certificate at Christmas and I know it only covers the price of the actual massage at that particular salon.

I would expect to have to pay a tip in the USA - not all countries have this "tipping culture" though.

I suppose the answer would be to speak to the salon providing the gift certificate and ask their advice. You could offer to pay the tip along with the certificate but that does defeat the incentive to get a good service from the person providing the massage.

I agree though that it does make it awkward for the person receiving the gift if they then have to pay out money themselves.

If you can afford it how about getting a massage together and then at the end you just pay the tip for both of you and the other person will have had the pleasure of your company as well as the massage.
You seem to be a thoughtful person so I'm sure they would enjoy spending time with you. Make a day of it and have fun!!!

A tip is not included in the cost of a gift certificate. As a massage therapist, I appreciate a tip but never expect one. It isn't like it is at a restaurant, I'm not working for tips, I get paid pretty well regardless. If you've given the certificate as a gift, it's up to the receiver to decide if they want to tip or not. A good therapist won't be standing there with their hand out waiting for some cash.

The thought of a massage gift certificate is great! The spa or salon gives the certificate for the recipient to enjoy the service, but the gratuity is at the discretion of that recipient. How can you possibly know how enjoyable the service will be until it is done?

It isn't a way out of giving a tip, but tipping is always done after the service. So, if the person wants to give a larger tip than average, it is welcome. If the masseuse is having an off day, if is still at the discretion of the patron to measure that gratuity.

I worked for tips for over 20 years and wouldn't expect a tip unless it was earned and the person had enough to spare. Tips are not assumed, tips are gesture of appreciation for good or exceptional service. If I receive a $100 service gift certificate, I can certainly wait until I have enough money for a tip before I use the gift.

I have a problem with massage therapists being tipped anyway. They claim to be professionals and should not expect tips.

I used to have a manicurist and I tipped her when I went. I gave my sister and gift certificate one time for a gift and I tipped the manicurist ahead of time. The manicurist told me thank you and said that she would make sure that if a tip was offered she would turn it down and say it was taken care of.

I would just give your friend the gift certificate and tell him or her that everything was already taken care of. Or if you really think a tip is necessary, then tip the massage therapist and tell your friend it has been taken care of.

The money paid for the gift certificate goes to the business. It does not include a tip.
You can give your friend cash to pay for the tip, or let them pay the tip themseves... still a small price to pay for a $100 massage, even if you can't afford the luxury.

Massage gift certificate as a gift for a guy...?

My boyfriend has been out in Washington State for Army training for the past five weeks. I know he's going to be very sore and he has trouble with back pain to begin with, so I am considering getting him a gift certificate for a massage to a local spa. I've been to the spa a few times for massages and loved it. My concern is that, as any overly-sweet-yet-unsure boyfriend would say, he claims that I "give the best massages" and he doesn't want one from "another woman". I just know that I'm no professional here, and seeing one for his back pain would definitely alleviate some tension and stress. Go with the gift certif or no? Guys, would you go if your woman gave you one?

I've gone twice recently. Once by myself, and then i enjoyed it so i took my girlfriend as well. I was pretty sore, so i got over any wierdness about a guy going to get a message. He will enjoy it, and just to make it that much sweeter, you could go too. Either do a couples thing ( you could be next to each other in the same room) or just buy yourself one too. Why not treat yourself while you think of something nice for him.

Hope he does it.

It's just a massage. You're not sending him to a hooker. Relax.

I keep hinting, and never get it, go for it, he will definately appreciate it.

of course!

If by massage you mean the Hong Kong Spa that's open until 4 am...yes!

Sounds Good Girl !

Are there "Couples" massages available

I'd go if my woman gave me one, but a pro doesn't put the love into it like my woman would. That's all she is, a pro. My woman doing it would be a way to show she loves me.

Set up a spa day for TWO - that way, you can BOTH be pampered (by professionals) together :):)

Heck yeah but set one up for you two so you both can get it at the same time, he may feel more comfortable if you're with him..

My man LOVES me, loves my massages, and from time to time he does get a professional massage, for some neck/shoulder problems.

It's no more weird than going out to eat at some fancy restaurant when you can cook at home.

I'm not a guy, but I think that's a good gift idea. If you think he'll be standoffish about it...maybe you could get a 'couples massage' appointment and you can both go together. He may feel much more at ease if he thinks it's something for you as a couple.

It really depends on the guy.... I, personally would go!!!

go ask for one and ask if it is returnable if you buy it in advance and he refuses to go. nothing else get one along with him to make him feel more at ease and make it a romantic retreat after relaxing. i would go 4 it!

This is a GREAT idea for a gift to your boyfriend! Just because it's a professional massage, doesn't mean it's going to be some erotic experience, that will cause him to be unfaithful to you! You may give good back rubs after a long day... But, I'm willing to be you are not a licensed massage therapist! He will be most grateful!

if i enjoyed her's better than someone elses i wouldnt use it.but if he really needs it or complains about it you should reall consider giving it to him.or make a deal set up a nice table and some cadels set the mood give him a massage and then just tell him if i give you on you have to get a massage from a professional because your worried about him and his back.(a little suggestion)

I'd go. There's no sex involved anymore, especially in Washington State, where the whole industry has been cleaned up. The people who do give massages have been through an extensive training course, earned a certificate, and know exactly what they're doing.

He may like your massages, but you don't really give the best ones. I'd go with the gift certif, tell him you're flattered at his confidence in you, but you really want to make sure he gets a great one.

Yes..give him the certificate. Guys may say that their woman always give the best massage, but it also feels good to get it from a professional who is getting paid. If you give him it as a gift he will not decline it, trust me. Offer also to drive him their, drop him off and you can go shop at a nearby store, OR get one for yourself at the same time. and then try this...a few days later offer to give him a massage and ask him which was better, yours or the spa....it will make for some fun.

yeah...that would be nice. you two could go together. then you could give him one a few days later. you should have picked up some tips since you said you've been there before. good luck. but yeah...doing something like this together is hot. ;-)

Guys: Would you like it if someone gave you a gift certificate for a massage for an anniversary present?

Girls: Have you ever given a guy a certificate for a massage and did they like it?

Thinking of this as an anniversary present for my boyfriend who is stressed out with work. Thanks in advance for answering.

Just bought one tonight for my husband. He's scared to death, but . . . a little excited. We talked about it ahead of time, so it's not like it was a surprise.

It's a very personal gift, so . . . if you two are really close, then . . .

If he doesn't want it, I'll take it! Damn, I could go for a good massage!

I think it'd be a great gift!

I have a massage gift certificate and the therapist won't call me back to schedule an appt. I've been to her ?

2 other times before, b/c I had been given gift certificates. i emailed her twice and called her once, all about a month ago The woman who gave me the gift certificates is friends with her and told me she was meaning to put me on her schedule, but just hasn't had the chance to. I know she's not too busy b/c she has been spending time with the friend, going for walks, meeting up. What would you do about this? just throw out the gift certificate and forget about it?
I was going to give it as a gift to someone else, but it's written out to me.

Keep calling her. Just because she is going for walks etc with your friend doesn't mean anything. She has work and play hours too. If the woman who gave you the GC is friends with her maybe she isn't paying her for the GC so she isn't so inclined to do the work. Tell your friend who gave you the GC that she isn't responding again. You can give it to anyone you want most likely. She is just being flakey.

Give the gift certificate as a gift to someone else.

Keep calling and demand an appointment. The gift certificate means that the session has been paid for. She's obligated to deliver the service.

I would call and leave a message and tell her it's very unprofessional of her. If she doesn't call you back, then report her to the BBB.

Send her the gift certificate with a polite note that says if she doesn't want your business, you don't want to bother her. Indicate that you were looking for a good massage therapist, and that you're still looking.

You need to call Your State Attorney General office and turn her in. Do not send her the gift certificate. That is your proof.

What are the terms and policies for gift certificates with this practitioner? They should either be included with the gift certificate or listed on her website. This will help you determine whether: a) the gift certificate is still valid (not past the expiration date), b) you can transfer it to a friend, c) whether it is refundable or not.

Since massage therapy is a service industry the practitioner can reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. However, she cannot deny you requesting a refund to your friend or allowing you to transfer the gift certificate to someone else. If the gift certificate is expired you may be able to still use it with a small service charge fee. Check your state's laws on gift certificates too before seeking further action.

wife is 20 wks massage gift certificate a good idea?

As long as they are totally qualified and know what areas not to massage as there are a lot that can be dangerous to the baby,

If they do not have proper accreditation then do not go to them

Massage certificate as wedding Gift?

My friend is getting married soon. I'm considering giving the couple gift certificates for a massage at a spa. 30 minute massage for each. It would cost me about 100.00$ with taxes for the gift.

They have been a couple for 15 years and living together for many years so they don't need anything for their home.

Is that a good idea for a gift? Any other ideas?
Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. A massage it is. I bought the certificates. I think they will like it.

its a fantastic idea! especially if you give them the gift early. it can get really stressful coming upto the wedding and i'm sure they'd appreciate going for a massage together before hand.

I want to get my bf a massage gift certificate. Should I pick a man or woman massage therapist?

He might feel more awkward with a man therapist, or at least my husband would, but I would feel awkward with him having a woman therapist and since I'm selfish I guess, I'd give him the man. Ha! Unless it was an old woman or something. I'm jealous.
