Spa shuttered after prostitution arrest WIVB

CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) - State Police say something extra was going on behind closed doors at a suburban massage parlor. Troopers have arrested a woman on prostitution charges.

State Police and US Homeland Security have arrested 47-year-old HongPing Zhang for prostitution and unlicensed massage therapy at the Flourishing Spa, which only opened about six weeks ago on Sheridan near Main in Clarence.

The owner of Curves wasn't surprised by the arrest. Tricia Calabrese said, "It was very obvious that it was not a nail salon."

"Everybody had pretty convincing suspicions," added Danny Stephan, the owner of Extreme Drum and Guitar School.

The neighboring business owners say they were told this was supposed to be a nail salon, but they never saw any women come or go.

Calabrese said, "And there's been noting but male customers that come for half-hour to 45 minutes intervals and it's locked up."

On the door is now a notice of inspection violation. But only five minutes after we arrived with our camera, a man in a luxury car pulled up, and could be seen counting cash. As soon as he noticed our cameras, he began to drive away. He told News 4 he had never been inside, but that his wife told him to come and get a massage. He showed us their ad in Artvoice.

When subcontracting massage therapy to a spa are my client files mine when I leave or the spas?

Keep in mind I am not an employee, but a subcontractor.

I believe they are yours...just as a hairstylist keeps her own records for her clients when she "rents" space/ or booth rental.

What is the best way about starting up my own business in massage therapy?

I'm trying top go to school for it when I'm alright financially. The school probably won't be that hard, but I know that the business part will be. I just wanna know where can I go online or who can I call about this. Also I want to open up a massage therapy spa when I complete my schooling for everything.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Success Beyond Work: What Prosperous Massage Therapists Know--Minimum Work, Maximum Profits, and a Sellable Business by Colleen Holloway
* Marketing Massage: How to Build Your Dream Practice by Monica Roseberry
* The Educated Heart: Professional Guidelines for Massage Therapists, Bodyworkers and Movement Teachers by Nina McIntosh

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Generating sales is the most important part of any business. Prior to starting, you need to identify:

1) Who is most likely to purchase your services? For example, do you think doctors, lawyers, athletes, or professionals who work on their feet all day would be the best source of customers?

2) What they read; where they go, and what they do for fun? Do they read newspapers/magazines, browse the internet, or attend social organizations?

3) Develop methods of informing them of your services. Do you place an ad in a paper, hire a telemarketer, or purchase time on a radio station.

Call someone who is already in the business and ask them how they got started.

Before you spend any money into a new business, you should ask yourself how much you know about the business. If you know nothing about it, you should never start a business on your own. It does not matter how much schooling you have on the field. Even medical doctors have to practise several years before they can have their own office.

I suggest you find a job first after finishing school. Learn more about the business before you invest any money on it.

I want to open my own massage therapy/day spa...?

Im going to school to be a massage therapist. And when I graduate. I want to open my own day spa, offering massage therapy and other spa services. I know that you have to be licensed to be a massage therapist (obviously) but do you have to get any kind of license to offer spa services such as facials, body wraps, etc??

Yes, but it depends on the state. If you're in Texas, you have to license your establishment.
You should have formal training in Spa techniques, not just the hydrotherapy part of massage school. Hydro day gives just a sampling of what you can learn to do professionally.

I've been to massage school, and I'm an LMT here in Texas. The link is for Texas Dept of Health.

What are some was of building a massage therapy business? That is in a new salon and spa already established.?

I recently moved from a doctor's office and am now at a salon in spa! There are 12 hair stylist, 5 receptionist's and 3 other people. I have started giving everybody that works there one free massage so they can help promote my business! Does anyone have more friends.

it would be ideal to have a one to two page website advertising your business and you should have buisness cards made with your webpage on it. I can recommend a site that allows you to build your own for a small amount of money and it's worth if you want to do your own site the way you want it. Go to IB-Card.com to promote your business with a one page internet buisness card and you should also have a waiver for your clients to sign to release you of anything legal and you're informing them of the terms so they're clear of what you will be doing in during and after the session and what follows for future sessions as well.

Massage Therapy.?

Hi i would like some advice as i am stuck!! Can someone please help me ...i am in a medical billing class right now and i have an opportunity to switch over to Massage Therapy i am looking at the future long term...and i need help in my decision. Which is better long term if you want to own your own business and or with the selection of jobs available right now i am just learning math and Medical Terminology in the billing class and computer work so i have not actually started to learn the actual billing procedure that is why now will be a good time to switch over i would like a career where i can set my own hours and also know that long term i will always have a job what scared me is that i looked in the paper and saw also that people hiring for Medical Billers in my area want 2 - 5 years experience and there are only one or two postings in the paper where as with Massage therapy you can work in a spa, health club, resort, chiroprator office etc would appreciate any input or advice.

alright i am going to be honest with you here... Genearlly people in billing offices aren't happy...

billing is the clean one, but the thing is that if you are massage therapist you can be your own boss, like my friend. Schedules are flexible (you get to choose your hours whenever you want, you are in demand!) and you get pay decently by the hour plus you get many tips especially from business persons.

When you get some experience you can work in medical center (my friend worked 1/2 year and now got a job with full benefits and bonus at a local hospital). You can basically work anywhere in the U.S. if you are a massage therapist,
plus you get to work with people.

Now hospitals have growing trends of hiring massage therapist, they will soon be in the ranks of physical therapist, occupational therapist, etc; but of course since it's less education compare to those, you get pay a bit lesser.

All talk of experience, but when hiring they may just hire you and pay less.
But I think you have worked it out in your mind what would be better for you. Remember, Medical Billing is a vaster area for job opportunity than spas and health Clubs.
I would think that if you are equipped for Med. you would be equipped for Health and Spas. Not vice versa, so check that part out too.

Also your interest counts. What you will enjoy doing. And that part about starting your own sounds good too.
All the best.

I am a massage therapist and it is a good business and you get to help people. If you have your own practice you can make good money and it is really in demand. I have a lot of articles on my website about working in massage, www.alternativehealthbusiness.com/massage-marketing.html

Do you feel you would actually love to help people feel well, relaxed, rejuvinated, cared for? Are you comfortable with having to touch people? I am a Neuromuscular Massage Therapist, and I love it! I love taking care of people. If you feel this way, it is a great area for you to start your career in. I work part-time in a salon/spa and on my own the other. Since you have this opportunity, it would be wise to take it now. You can always go back to school for the other career, so you have a back up. Honey, you have a long life ahead of you...go for your dreams,,,don't worry,,,and make sure you take care of yourself in whatever you do! Good Luck!

what are the top 10 schools for massage therapy in southern california?

im looking for a great massage therapy program that also provides training for spa therapies such as aromatherapy, body wraps etc.

Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies - get a head start.

Your opinions on massage therapy?

I will be attending massage therapy school this month. This is for the basic program (required courses for TX MT). What are some of the options I have with the basic education? What are the best in your opinion? Should I go on to take the advanced curriculum, or stick with the "continued education" courses every couple of years (required)? I am aware of the general options (cruise ships, physical therapy, spa/salon, etc.), I'm just unsure of the level of certified education I need for each of them. Would you recommend a bachelor's in a related degree?
Also, if this is your field, how was the certification test?

I have a friend who is licensed and she works at a resort not even a mile from her house . She has appointments mon-fri and makes her own schedule . It's a good profession .

Where should I go for a massage in Honolulu?

Anyone been to Clinical and Spa Massage Therapy in the Ala Moana Hotel?

That state is well-known for talented massage therapists.

Recommended books Massage Therapy books?

Well I am going to go to the Florida school of natural health and healing for "Swedish" and "Spa Training" massage therapy classes and to get my licenses, I was wondering if there were any books that anybody here could recommend to me.

get the 'Clinical Massage Therapy' book, great book to refer to.

Also get 'Massage Therapists guide to Pathology' another great book to have handy.

I would also suggest to order a subscription to Massage Magazine, they have so many interesting articles!

Good luck in school!
