Beauty: Back to nature New Zealand Herald

Everyone wants shiny, naturally beautiful hair and increasingly people want natural ingredients to get it.

Until recently the options haven't seemed that varied.

If you're keen on finding a good botanically based shampoo, then from a performance point of view you're probably best to start with companies specialising in haircare, rather than those that add shampoos to their skincare ranges. But the latter can make perfectly nice cleansing products, if you hair is in good nick.

Over the past year or so big multi-nationals have been launching their own more natural ranges in response to consumer demand. Next month Matrix is bringing out a new Biolage range called Delicate Care that is free of sulphates, parabens and silicone. This follows on from the launch a year ago of Schwarzkopf's Essensity range followed by L'Oreal's Serie Nature. These ranges include styling products.

Purists may question how thoroughly natural some of these are, but they do draw on their companies' extensive haircare research and tend to address most customers' key concerns.

Natural Hair Products

products I use as a natural

What is the best, affordable all natural black hair care product?

I dont work for much but I love my hair and try my best to take care of it. I'm looking for something that is 100% natural and costs under $10.U.S. if possible.

save up and buy the more expensive stuff.
cheap products are full of cheap chemicals.
the more expensive products are so priced because it costs a little extra to do things right, with natural materials.

i would recommend ABBA for natural hair.
it's all natural, and very good for textured hair.
my sister, who has been wearing her hair naturally for more than 10 years now swears by it.

here are a few of their products:

you can get this line in any beauty supply store.

Try this website it is for and Developed by African American men or women.

Oops I misread your question the first time. Here is a very great a well priced product I use. I have the Island naturals and would love to try the honey suckle rose.

Aubrey Organics

Tress Relief
Treat Worn Out Locks to This Deep-Conditioning Treatment

1. To prep the hair for treatment, shampoo and gently massage the scalp with exhilarating Rosemary Mint Herbal Shampoo (detangling formula). Rinse and repeat if needed.
2. Deep condition with a Hair Smoothie (for normal hair try Tui Hair Smoothie; for dry hair try Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie) and apply to hair from roots to ends. Leave in 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the level of damage. Rinse thoroughly. If you've got fine hair, shampoo again.
3. To replace essential oils, pour a small amount of Khoret Amen or Tui Leave-in Conditioner into the palms of your hand and massage into hair and scalp. Do not rinse out.

What is the best hair care product (moisturizer) for Natural African American hair?

I went all natural meaning I havent but any chemaicals or a relaxer/perm in my hair in almost 2 years and I have yet to find something good for it. Please HELP!!!

just because you are black does not mean you are limited to the "ethnic" section of the hair aisle! This is a common misconception! tHERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "BLACK HAIR PRODUCTS" AND "WHITE HAIR PRODUCTS". I hate hearing ppl say that, but i used to think that too. Anyways, most African American hair products are BAD for you! The only ones i hear good reviews about are:
*Organics Root Stimulator
*Elasta QP
*Design Essentials
*Lekair Cholesterol
*And I think "African Pride Braid Spray"
*keracare(this is salon product though)
*Proclaim
*Aphogee
*fantasia IC

Avoid "Motions", profectiv, and that B&B stuff please! lol they suck. And do not use that crappy Pink lotion. If "mineral oil" or "petrolatum" is at the beginning of the ingredients list, do not purchase that product!

First of all, keeping your hair moisturized. This is as simple as wetting it in the shower, or wetting your hands and running them through your hair. DO NOT buy any moisturizer that has MINERAL OIL or PETROLATUM! care free curl gold and s-curl are popular moisturizers. Do NOT use that Pink lotion!
I also hear of some ppl using "sta-soft-fro" Also, I hear alot of them "cowash" meaning they wash their hair with just conditioner most of the time. I have also read that the line "Carol's Daughter" is perfect for naturals

I dont have african hair, but I have terrible thick course hair, and I found this stuff called 911 in the black hair care section of walmart. Its amazing Its a leave in conditioner,it really makes your hair soft and shiny,I loved it.

.....Our shampoos and conditioners are the finest available for the care of hair that is dry, damaged, chemically processed, colored and/or weather damaged. Many of these conditions are common to African Americans and people of various ethnicities. Our shampoos and conditioners help strengthen hair, smooth hair, provide moisture and stimulate growth.

We offer several product lines to choose from. We have salon grade products based on natural recipes but enhanced with the best ingredients science has to offer. These are loaded with the ingredients that are best for your hair in larger amounts than you will find in typical drug store products. We also have the best quality all-natural products you will find anywhere.

Use a leave in conditioner every time you wash your hair. It makes it soft! Use cooking oil (the kind you fry chicken with) for your scalp to prevent from drying out and it doesn't stink or gets sticky!

wildgrowth

I suggest checking our the Profectiv hair products. they have a few moisturizers to choose from. they help keep your hair moisturized and they are not greasy at all. another thing i use is garnier fructis 3-n-1 moisturizers. The comment about grease is somewhat true. You should use extra virgin olive oil to reatain moisture in your natural hair. Also products with jojoba oil and sunflower oil will work wonders on making your hair soft as well. When you do find a moisturizer that you want to try, look at the FIRST THREE INGREDIENTS on the jar. If they contain: MINERAL OIL, or PETROLEUM, do not use them. this does not moisturize your hair. it simply coats the hair to make it look healthy. when in reality it is blocking the hair from absorbing any real moisture. so your hair ends up extremely greasy and unhelathy.

You should look at the hair care forum at www.blackhairmedia.com also! Hope I helped!

Links for Dominican/natural hair care products (cheap)?

I have been purchasing Dominican hair care products for over half a year now, but with a new addition to the family arriving soon :o) I have to start cutting down on how much and what i spend money on :( has anyone found a good site that sells dominican hair products or natural hair care products at reasonable prices?

http://www.roundbrushhair.com/

You can always try ebay too! Its where I buy some of my natural products cheaper.

What is a good brand of natural hair care products?

Such as shampoo, conditioner, and gel.

(I know this is a food section but I need an organic opinion)

Thanks!

I use Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner(sugar beet and grapefruit). I switched to them because they don't use any laurel/lauryl sulfate(makes the shampoo have a thick lather) which irritates the heck out of my skin. I don't use gel or anything like that, though, so I can't help you with a personal preference, but here are some search results:

Also, the last link will be for using henna to dye hair(I've been thinking of using it because of my sensitive skin):)

aveda
only aveda
dont ever put anything else on your hair, go to only aveda salons, let only aveda stylists and colorists touch your hair

Try Vive Pro by Loreal. It works absolutely fine and controls frizz, makes hair shinier, cleaner, healthier, and better. You can get them anywhere except a dining place or a gas station!

Does anyone know of a place in Kansas City that sales natural hair care products?

I have dreadlocks and was wondering did anyone have a suggestion or know of a place that sales natural shampoos/conditioners etc, etc.

I don't know of any that sell "black" natural hair products but if there is a wholefood where you live than you should really try Aubrey Organics and Nature's Gate shampoos and conditioners. Aubrey Organics shampoos are said to be a little drying but they're conditinors are the best. Nature's Gate Aloe Vera Moisturizing conditioner and their Henna Shine Enhancing conditioner are THE ABSOLUTE BEST. $5 bucks will get you 18oz. They're conditioner is the truth.

Here are some online natural hair products that are popular. I've only used Oyin handmade but the other one is said to be good too.
http://www.oyinhandmade.com
http://www.blendedbeauty.com

In any drug store, you can buy products called Organix. Every ingredient is natural and safe for all hair types. Their products are extremely cheap, too.

Is there a Sephora near you? If so, you should try Carol's Daughter products, which are sold at Sephora. Or you may want to order them online...Carol's Daugher is EXCELLENT for natural hair.

Also, try Garnier Fructis' shampoos and conditioners, which are great as well...

Try the Artistic view salon.

what products are best for ethnic hair ,synthetic or all natural hair care products?

And the names of the products which worked for you .

when my hair was relaxed i used motions, it was great for my hair...with natural hair i use mainly natural products because synthetic products just sit on my hair

I have natural hair and I personally like natural products. I love oils and my hair loves them too. My favs. are castor(thickens hair), jojoba(mimicks hairs natural oil), avocado, coconut(great for shine), sweet almond, rosemary(stimulates hair growth), peppermint(stimulates hair growth) and lavender. The last three i mentioned are called essential oils and should be mixed w/ a carrier oil ( oils that i mentioned before the eo's) if u want to use them. There are so many to choose from. Try some of them out.

Note: u don't have to put all oils named at once in ur hair.

I also love butters like shea, avocado, mango butter for stylin my hair in braids, twist, w/e. Give them a try also. Makes my hair so soft and gives good hold(like gel).

For shampoos I use dr. bronners castile soap. Its all natural. Some people like to dilute it with water but i don't.

For conditoners I use v05 cuz its cheap and my hair is thick so i don't have that kind of money to waste. It works well. I mix some oils in them to make it work even better. You could also try suave as well.

However, everyone's hair isn't the same so what might work for one might not work for another. Only u can determine what ur hair likes. Heck, maybe synthetic products might work better for u. IDK, hope this helps.

What are good black hair care products for natural and transitioning hair?

I am currently transitioning and am 3 months in. I still have a ton of relaxed hair left. I have a dry scalp and I am looking to find ORGANIC hair products for natural and transitioning black hair.

You will need a moisturizing shampoo (without sodium laureth sulfate, commonly known as sls; it dries the hair out and strips it of it's natural oils and moisture) you may want to try aubrey organics products for this (can find them at whole foods stores); next you will need a protein deep conditioner: organics hair mayo (in a jar) or organics replenish packs. both of these work great for me (i've been transitioning for 7 months) and they help tame my natural hair. also, invest in a moisturizing leave-in conditioner and a protein leave-in conditioner. I use giovanni direct leave-in for my protein conditioner and i'm still on the lookout for a moisturizing leave-in (I'll probably invest in pure shea butter or aloe vera with glycerin). this is what works for me; there's so much information out there for properly caring for hair, especially when dealing with two textures. the key is to have patience and to learn and understand your hair and what it's telling you. if you would like more detailed information you can email me at my yahoo address.

what natural hair care products can be used for an African American with virgin hair.?

I am a 30 year old women that has gone totally natural. However, finding products to use on my hair has been an ordeal. Everything I use drys my hair out and or makes my hair dry, itchy and flaky. Since my hair is very, very course, it makes my hair very hard to manage. If anyone has any natural methods that would help. I would be very appreciative.

Natural Afro textured hair is curly hair... it's just that the spirals are smaller and the hairs intertwine, making the spirals and curls more difficult to see. That being said, it should be cared for and treated in the same manner that anyone with naturally curly hair would. Contrary to popular belief our hair (I'm a Black woman with natural hair, too) is extremely delicate and cannot tolerate a lot of yanking, tugging, pulling, etc. You are most likely using hair care products with a lot of "bad" alcohol. Not all alcohol is drying, but since you've complained of dry hair, I'm guessing that this is one of the reasons you have dryness. I go to a salon that specializes exclusively in the care and feeding of curly hair. Ouidad's salon in located at 37 West 57th Street in NYC. Here is the link to her website: http://www.ouidad.com. You should go to her website and read all about how you can take care of your beautiful, natural hair. She has her own line of products that have only the best ingredients that are, again specially for curly hair. The cornerstone of any hair care regimen is regular and DEEP conditioning. She sells the absolute best deep conditioner I have ever used. Her products aren’t cheap, but they are certainly not overpriced, either. They are rich and wonderful and a little goes a long way. You can fill out a "Curl Profile" on her website and you will find which products will be best suited for your hair.

In the meantime, you want to limit shampooing to about once a week. Use a gentle shampoo… not a baby shampoo, as those can be very drying to our hair. Paul Mitchell makes a good shampoo, if you don’t want to get into Ouidad’s line (but I REALLY hope you do!). If you workout and your hair gets sweaty, you can get away with a thorough rinsing every few days. This will get rid of the excess perspiration without stripping your hair of the oils it produces naturally. Because our hair is so tightly spiraled, the oil that our scalp produces has a difficult time working it’s way along the hair shaft. If you gently massage your scalp, you can help your hairs natural oil make this journey to the end of each strand of hair.

Try to use as little heat as possible as this will absolutely kill your hair. If you don't want to use Ouidad's products, Carol's Daughter sells hair care products that are 100% natural and geared specifically towards Black women, although anyone can use them. A friend of mine SWEARS by C.D. Tui Hair Smoothie, deep conditioning treatment. Healthy Hair Butter, Hair Milk and Tui leave in conditioner are also excellent and they are working wonders on her hair. These are all hair dressings that you can use daily or as needed. You can check out Carol's daughter's line on Sephora on line or @ most Sephora shops.

Before finding Ouidad, I read an excellent book called “Good Hair” by Lonnice Brittem-Bonner (sp?). Ouidad also has a book called “Curl Talk”. I highly recommend both books as must reads. In Good Hair, you will find a number of styling options that will help you expand your hair wardrobe beyond the ponytail. Ponytails, by the way, are not good for our delicate locks, as they place a lot of stress on the hair, especially at the hairline where it tends to be fragile.

In Ouidad’s book, you will learn things too numerous to mention; it’s not a book where she’s pushing her products… she gives you home made hair care treatments and an ingredients list re: what to look for in shampoos, conditioners and hair dressings.

I wish you luck and strongly encourage you to order both books AND read Ouidad’s website.

What would be good all natural hair products for African-American children?

I have a 2 year old daughter and I'd like to start using all natural hair care products on her hair. I'm considering Aubrey Organics (Honeysuckle shampoo) and Qhemet butter cream. Has anyone used either of these or have suggestions for other products?
I forgot to mention that she's allergic to dairy, wheat and nuts so the products shouldn't contain either of those.

STAY AWAY FROM MISS JESSIES BUTTERCREME! It contains Wheatgerm Oil.

READ THE LABELS!

1. Making your own products that way you know what you're getting. Visit EbonysBraidery.com for recipe ideas.
2. Qhemet Biologics
3. Curlie Q
4. Blended Beauty
5. Oyin Handmade
6. Who says you can't add what you want to any product? I cut many of my products with distilled water or shea butter to add more nutrients or to water down the "bad ingredients." Essential Oils are great additives as well. Visit www.EbonysBraidery.com for more info.

Natural Hair Care Products – Beginners Guide

The effectiveness of modern, natural hair care products is known to all, because they are very effective in reducing hair loss and enhancing hair beauty. They are also perceived as being free from side effects and may deliver additional health benefits.

Balanced diets rich in vitamins and minerals are a must for hair health. In this regard, natural products are receiving increased recognition after years of neglect. Natural hair care products have become popular for both external and internal use. Besides, they have less chance of causing over-treatment and they rarely over-dry or over-condition your hair.

Using the right hair care and beauty products is essential for the look and health of your hair. But, the problem with natural hair care products is that you may find it difficult to choose one that is appropriate for you and your hair. Most of the products available in the market today, bear a “Natural” label, whether genuine or fake making it harder to find a good natural hair care product.

Four types of products make a medley of hair care items. The four basic natural hair care products are: hair cleansing products, hair conditioners, hair remedies and hair nutrition products.

What Are Natural Hair Care Products?

Not all natural hair care products all natural. Products available in salons and over store counters are never 100% natural, because, for better results and preservation issues, they need to contain a certain amount of synthetic ingredients. The synthetic products can also provide better foaming, cleaning and emulsifying than 100% natural products. However, you can prepare some home made hair care products that are absolutely natural.

You might have come across some organic hair growth products and equaled that with natural hair growth products. However, they are different. Organic does not mean natural. You can prepare organic products synthetically and those products are not always safe, gentle and effective.
