War and hot tubs: Charlie Wilson's one regret Houston Chronicle

, Will be buried next week at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The babe-chasing Texan who covertly funneled hundreds of millions to the mujahedeen lived long enough to see both sides of his war.

Secret wars are no joke, but Wilson made us laugh. Some of his obituaries last week recounted the time this colorful rascal squired a former Miss World-USA to Pakistan, and the time he took another girlfriend to belly-dance for Egyptian officials. And then there was the “Beat the Rap” party he threw after authorities dropped an investigation into his presence in a certain Las Vegas hot tub — one where cocaine was allegedly snorted and a pair of showgirls wore nothing but high heels.

With Wilson, there was no talk of prayer or therapy or beating his addictions. No stoic, beleaguered wife standing behind him. And no regrets — or at least, none about his personal life.

What to do with outdoor hot tub in a northern winter?

I am looking to purchase a house with an outdoor unprotected hot tub in an area with severe winters. Do I change the water? Is it expensive to keep it heated?
What are pitfalls?

This house also has only one bathroom which contains a whirlpool bath and I like bath oil. Do I just make sure the jets are off when using bath oil? Or are my bath oil and bubble baths over?

Thanks.

just turn the temp down but winter is the best time to use it don't drain it you will crack the pvc pipe enjoy the hot tub if you use it it about a dollar aday to use it your cell phone cost more to use

what pump do you use to drain outdoor hot tub in deck ?

I have 400 gallon hot tub that needs to be drained and I would like a pump that can empty it within 15-20 minutes (i.e. ~1600 gpm). i plan to drain the hot tub every 3 months. FYI, i have seen some that have top handles to easily place the pump into the hot tub and it seems like a nice feature.

please provide specific make and model of the submersible pump you use to drain your outdoor hot tub. if you have a web link to a site which sells them, please list that also.

would like to spend less than $100 on a pump if possible.
i meant 1600 gph . my apology.

You can buy a cheap garden hose a Walmart for less than $10. Siphon!!! It`s a little slower, but it`s a lot cheaper and nothing mechanical to breakdown.

Check out the Little Giant brand of pumps. They have the handle on top and pump from the bottom so most the water will be gone. Sorry I don't have the model number of mine but it works really well and they are not expensive.

Does anyone know of a cabin with an outdoor hot tub available to rent within 4 hours of Chicago?

I'm trying to find a cabin to rent within a reasonable drive from a Chicago suburb. Amenities should include fireplace, outdoor hot tub, fire pit, privacy and view. Since we travel with Simon, our 5lb. Yorkie mix, the owner should be comfortable allowing a well behaved non-shedding dog in the cabin. A fall color getaway would be ideal. Any recommendations?

I would try the Dells or Lake Delton area. The rates are very low right now as the actual 'Lake' Delton was destroyed in flood. -Sounds weird but it was man made and the levy broke or something...
Anyhoo, the Dells is a very nice area with resorts and/or lakeside cabins. Some if not most are rather luxurious and would have outdoor hot tops. Try Wilderness or Kalahari or even a private family owned who has vacation properties.

The leaves and colors are wonderful in the fall and you may want to check out House on the Rock as well

Try the Galena area...Galena Territories / Eagle Ridge. It's around 2-3 hours away.

Here are a few sites that provide vacation home rentals, cabin rentals and cottage rentals from all over the United States. I advertise on these sites and find them to be very user friendly with lots of photos and area information:

can i fill up a outdoor hot tub/jacuzzi without hoooking it up to anything?

i recently rented a house and there is a hot tub on the deck, the landlord said it isnt hooked up to anything. what do you have to hook up to make it work?

also if i just put water in it and didnt turn it on, would it all drain out or be fine in there as long as i put chemicals in?

Probably would be fine but you'd eventually have the problem of needing to add chemicals to it to keep down the green.

You should be sure that it's not hooked to anything because you don't want an improperly wired hot tub filled with water. If it's not grounded properly, it could cause a dangerous shock.

If you're in the U.S., some are 120 but I believe most are 240. I've seen some have heat covers to put on when not in use, to keep the water from loosing the heat.

The only connection is an electric hookup to run the pump and heat the water. Most tubs have a valve to empty the water.

With no power to run the filtration the water will get mighty dirty!

How can I efficiently get rid of my outdoor hot tub?

I've decided to replace the above ground spa in my backyard with a garden. It's 15 years old, and it works, but we don't use it often enough to make the maintenance & cost worth it. How do I get rid of my hot tub in a cost-effective manner? Hire someone to take it away? Post it on Craigslist? If you've gotten rid of one before, how did you do it?

I operate a swimming pool and spa business. If you cannot give the spa away, hire a local handy man to cut up the spa and haul it away. My serious handy men can have the spa cut up and loaded in their truck in under three hours. Hope this helps.

I gave mine away, and the people came and hauled it off. It was by word of mouth. I think they planned on fixing it up and using it again, but I never heard. Craigs List sounds good, too.

you can put it on craigslist , my mom uses it all the time she says its great to get rid of things you dont want no more.

Put an ad in the paper

I had one at a house I bought that didn't work right. It was one of those wooden ones with the fiberglass insert. The house is on a hill with narrow steps leading up to it. So, it would have been impossible to remove without a crane or taking it apart.

It took a couple of days, but I took a saws-all to it and cut it into manageable pieces. I then called a hauling company to take it away. When I told my friends what I had done, they were appalled that I didn't let them know, so they could take it down to their vacation home in Mexico. But, when they realized how difficult it would have been to remove in one piece, they understood.

My point is, if you can get it out of there in one piece, there's someone out there who will come and get it for free. Try craigstlist in your area or your local paper, and advertise it as free to a good home.

DO i have to put my own water in my outdoor hot tub?

my dad and brother said you have to fill your hose water but shouldnt the hot tub have its own water?

There is another option: pay a plumber to run pipes to the hot tub. But, there will be extra expense, city permits, plumber, piping, supplies, inspection fees, etc. to have plumbing installed. Why go to that trouble (and expense) when a hose works just as well?

Fill it with the hose, add the chemicals, and start soaking.

Unless it rains a lot where you live, fill it up yourself.

You have water for a reason. It's to use it when you need it. Could you imagine how heavy and large the water container would be if it came with the hot tub? Dumb question

Since I have never heard of them including water when delivered, yes, you will need to fill it.

Yes you have to add your own water. The tub does come with a drain....no way to fill with water outside of useing a hose.

How do I turn the jets off on this outdoor hot tub?

I'm housesitting in Newport Coast and there is a built in, outdoor hot tub..
I turned it on ten hours ago by pressing a small white button in side the tub but I can't turn it off. I tried pressing the button several times earlier today but it is still on!

aghhh.

I rather not bother calling the house owner. Also, I would like to messing with the outlets or turn the tub completely off. (just the jets)

Your immediate solution is to flip the breaker to it off or take out the "quick disconnect". Since the tub is built in there will be no plug as one suggested.

A common problem for that white air switch button that turns the pump on and off is for the tube that is behind the button to have slipped off it's nipple. IF you can remove or look under the button it would be great to make sure the air hose is still attacked to the button. Otherwise the tech needs to look at where the hose is attached to the air switch on the pack and verify it is attached. If it is next you need to replace the inexpensive($15) air switch. All of this is very easy to do.

Unplug it and plug it back in.

Thats silly to just turn off the jets. It costs money to just let it run. Its bad on the motor too. If the motor burns out, you'll have a lot of explaining to do. A new motor costs big money.
A hot tub isnt design to just run non stop indefinitely.

Look for more buttons.
If you unplug it, it will get cold.

By law there is suppose to be a cut off or breaker panel near by. Just open it and flip the breaker off.

how should i clean an all wood outdoor hot tub without damaging the wood, but making it safe for people to use?

it looks like some kind of redwood, like a giant wine cask (remember lucy & ethel crushing the grapes on I LOVE LUCY?) it's hand made possibly from a kit,I noticed a silicone"caulk" type thing between the planks,it's been sitting for a few seasons gathering leaves and all kinds of bacteria& whatever else, that i need to clean up without affecting the wood. PLEASE HELP! I WANT TO USE MY HOT TUB!!!!
THANKS!!

Use a pressure washer. Most washers have a feature that allows you to inject chemicals into the output stream. There are a variety of treatments for wood products that will remove stains and disinfect at the same time. Try a major retailer such as Home Depot. If it is just a stain, the high pressure water may do the job without adding any chemical. Just be careful that you don't damage the wood by getting the nozzle too close.

Can you recommend an outdoor hot tub/spa for under 2k that is decent?

I noticed sam's club has a couple, one for around $1600, member's mark brand. Anyone have positive/negative experiences with any brand/model for 2K or under? I want one just to relax, I don't need 200 jets and a pop up TV...just something small and simple and cheap.

Hey there,

Great idea on getting a hot tub. I use ours almost everyday.

For under 2K you will probably be limited to a portable hot tub which many people like. These tubs are easy to put up and use right away. If you get a permanent hot tub then you will have to pay for the installation of electrical hook up which can run anywhere from $1000 - $2000. There is a good article for you to look at below and a good website that you will find useful to help you decide.

Just remember one thing. If you go too cheap, then you often get a pretty cheap tub in many ways including quality. I wanted to get one in the price range you were looking but in the end we bought a used tub which had been returned to the manufacturer and repaired. We got it for about half the retail price just because it was used for a few months. They fixed it and resold it to us and we are extremely happy with it. We spent around $4000 plus installation. Well worth the extra cost.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Do you use chemicals in your outdoor hot tub or just change the water periodically?

I used to have a lot of trouble maintaining the water with chemicals and just gave up one day. Now, the water seems to do well on it's own; stays clear, no bad smells, minimal growth on tub walls, ...

I let my parents do that stuff
