Eye experts: Check swimming pool chemicals Albany Herald On-line

Specifically, improper chemical levels can result in more bacteria exposed to the eye if the levels are too low, or tissue loss from chemical burns if it is too high.

“With tissue loss, the eye is not protected as it was. This leaves them open to infection,” Prchal said. “The biggest problem is chemical burns and the associated conditions with that.”

Experiencing burning or itchy eyes after spending time in the water is a common problem experienced by those who swim in chlorinated pools. Caused by irritants such as chlorine, air pollution or chemical exposure, chemical conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin layer of transparent tissue that covers the white of the eye.

When the symptoms include blurriness or haloes around lights due to swelling, the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — may be involved. Corneal irritation from the irritants in pool water would be classified as chemical keratitis.

Experts with the Georgia Optometric Association say that people who experience chemical conjunctivitis or chemical keratitis from swimming are likely to display symptoms in both eyes. These symptoms can be manifested as a combination of gritty sensation, itching, burning and excessive tearing of the eyes.

Orb pool chemical system - how does it work?

The sales person was telling me that it releases copper into the water & keeps the pool cleaner than just adding regular chlorine. We already have metals in our water (city water) & I am concerned about the liner turning orange. The guy said if you have a gunite pool it will turn it blue. What are ingredients of the chemical used in the orb. Does the Orb release copper or does it just hold the chemical &the chemical releases copper? Is the Orb system on cleaning your pool, better than just adding regular chlorine to a floaty thing? Are there any complaints about the Orb system?
What product do you suggest to use, so as not to fade or color the liner?
Thank you so much in advance for taking the time out to read & answer my questions.

I am not familiar with the Orb pool chemical system in particular but, If you know your source water has metals in it stay away form any chemicals that contain copper. You will eventually have staining of the pool liner and discolored water. Copper usually shows up as a blue/green stain. It is recommended not to use a floater in a vinyl liner pool. There is a chance that it could sink and bleach the liner. It is a small chance admittedly, but a chance not worth taking and needing to replace your liner. I highly suggest installing an automatic chlorinator like one of these http://www.everything4pools.com/products/42/default.html .
and use regular chlorine tablets in the chlorinator. This is safe for your liner, will reduce the frequency to refill the chlorinator and can be adjusted to maintain a steady level of chlorine by turning a control knob on the chlorinator. Have your pool water tested for metals, you may need to add a stain preventative to help remove the copper already in the fill water. Be diligent in keeping you water chemistry in the proper ranges and you will have no adverse effects from the copper in your fill water.

I accidentally used the pool chemical GLS Strike out as treatment and didn't dilute it as the directions state?

I'm hoping that I didn't do any damage. Is there something that I should do now that the chemical is distributed in the pool water?

I would drain some of the water out and put fresh in to dilute it within the pool itself.

Aqua Chem Pool Chemical Queston?

well about an hour ago i just sanitized my pool with Aqua Chem's Small Pool Sanitizer (it controlls algea and kills bacteria) it provided clorine to my pool and now my pool is at the correct clorine level

my question is can i shock my pool right now after i have just sanitized it with that stuff. (the Shock is a 4 in one pool shock that came with my Small Pool Sanitizer)?

will it hurt my vinyl pool?

will it cause a chemical reaction?

The shock won't hurt the pool and will not cause a chemical reaction if added to the added soon after the sanitizer is used. However, you should wait a couple of hours before testing the water to give the sanitizer time to dissolve. If the free available chlorine residual is below 1.0 ppm, you will need to treat your pool with Shock according to label directions otherwise you don't need to shock it yet unless you have an algae problem. If the chlorine level is over 3 ppm then you will need to wait until it drops before using the pool.

Is there a website or something where I can find my local chemical pool store?

Is pool chemical, Pristine Blue the same as HTH Clarifier?

I want to know cause Pristine Blue is so expensive and HTH Clarifier is not. I wnat to use it to keep my pool clean. My pool is white cloudy and will not come un-cloudy.

prestine blue is a much better chemical in the fact that it has more chemical in it. The HTH is less expensive because there is less product, so you have to buy more to make it equal to the Prestine.

My advice? Use the better brand, you will come out worlds ahead, in less time.

Not the same

no where near being the same...

switch to a chemical free pool?

what are the benefits of a chemical free pool? does it cost more? will it stay as clean?

i also switched and i absolutly LOVE it....its easier on my skin, hair, and eyes, its less matenince, it costs just about the same and it stays fairly clean.......why do people use chemicals to start with...just make sure you have an awesome filter or you will get gunky water in less then 3 days

if you swallow the water at least there will be no chemicals ( but a bunch of germs) maybe it will cost more i am not sure maybe not that clean

chemical free?? do you mean salt water pool?? if so yes it is cheaper, alot cheaper and easy to maintain.....

Where can I find printable sheets for recording daily swimming pool chemical readings?

This is for an apartment community and test results must be kept for the board of health

You don't need all this fancy stuff.... just keep the chlorine and PH at their proper levels.... For the PH, use Baking soda (Arm and Hammer) to raise it, and muratic acid (bought at hardware store) to lower it. That's pretty much all you need to keep your pool nice and sparkly. Just test your water atleast once weekly, and keep the chlorine and ph balanced and you'll be ok....

Shock is more for if you are really low on chlorine or the thing is super green. It's a highly concentrated chlorine treatment. It wont hurt the pool, and it wont cause a reaction. It WILL cause it to get cloudy for a few days more than likely tho. Unless your pool is green or totally bottomed out on chlorine, you dont need it.

Enjoy

Chemical Free Pool Systems?

I am sick of having chemicals in my pool. I am ready to go chemical free. I am sick of smelling like chlorine, in both my hair and skin. I have also heard that having a chemical pool has major health risks, like cancer and asthma. I want my family and I to be safe, so I have decided to switch to a chemical free pool.

I need to know about chemical free pool systems. What pool system is the best one? I have heard a lot from different chemical free pool companies. From ozone, to salt water pools, to other treatment types.

I need to know which chemical free pool system and company you prefer. I just have no idea which one to get, and which chemical free pool system is the safest, most effective pool system.

I also need the web address of the company, so i can check them out for myself. So if you have had any experiences with chemical free pool systems, and/or companies, please share.

Thanks.

Hello,

This is my story. I first owned a chemical free salt water pool, about 7 years ago. It was good, accept for this. It ruined my pool and pool equipment. Which i did not know it would do. I guess, there are now studies that show that salt water generators degrade your pool liner and equipment. So you could guess that after I found that out, I found a new chemical free pool system immediatly.

The chemical free pool system that I currently have, I 100% reccommend and has worked for me for years. It is called an Ecosmarte chemical free pool system.

I bought it about 5 years ago and could not be happier. It is both safe to use, and environmentally friendly (which is a huge plus for me). I dont need chemicals, it is good for my skin, and I am happy :)

If you need information, their website is http://www.ecosmartepool.com

What is the best way to shut off an in-ground, chemical, fiberglass swimming pool?

I can't afford to maintain my pool. Some of my neighbours have had to do this, but they have other kinds of pools. I was told I cannot empty the pool because empty fiberglass pools "pop" up from the ground, which will be extremely costly to repair. Can I just switch it off and stop adding the increasingly costly chemicals? This wouldn't be permanent, just for a few months during a bad economic period.

Thanks!

If you stop running the pool (min. 6 hrs. a day),
you will have a health hazard in the yard.
It will become a mosquito breeding ground.
Even if you put a solid "winter" type cover over it, things can & will get into the pool & cause decay.
The winter style cover is still your best solution.
ALL types of inground pools can "pop up" if drained completly, not just fiberglass.
Your neighbors may be in for a shock when
theirs pops out!
