How to Maintain A Swimming Pool - Clean and Test Pool Water

Pool Maintenance?
I am moving into a new house with an in ground pool. It is 60,000 gallons. Is there a website where I can learn about general maintenance? (how much chlorine to use, how to clean the filter, etc.)
Thanks.
Best place to get help is your local Pool Supply Store. They will test your water for free and give suggestions for maintenance.
Get the part numbers and serial numbers on all your equipment then go on line to download owners manuals if they exist.
60,000 gallons of water will need 66.87oz of 12.5% sodium hypochlorite to attain 1ppm.
Typical Cl 1-3ppm with 5 max.
Good Luck!
You're welcome!!
What is the usual price of professional in-ground pool maintenance?
I'm looking for examples of what other people pay for weekly or bi-weekly maintenance of standard residential in-ground unheated swimming pool.
I received a proposal for bi-weekly pool maintenance - including opening and closing the pool and all chemicals over the 24 weeks the pool will be open - in the amount of $1800. Last year I paid $550 for opening and closing alone (and about another $500 for chemicals) and maintained the pool myself. That means 6 months of cleaning/maintenance at about $200 per month. Does that sound ok? Seems high.
i dont know if this will help you because i live in california where the pool stays open year round, but i was paying $70.00 a month for bi-weekly maintenance.after about 6 months of watching the pool guy do the chemicals and cleaning,i figured that i could do it.i know spend about $40.00 a month doing it myself.
Do I still need my pool maintenance during the autumn and winter months?
I have a chlorine pool and have a guy who maintenanced it throughout the summer. Do I still need him to maintenance it during the months we won't be using the pool? Should I drain the pool altogether?
Yes, you do. He should pay your pool less visits during the winter. Maybe once a month instead of every week.He will ensure the chemicals are correct and it stays clean.
You will need to super-chlorinate before covering. You will still need to run your filter for a couple hours a day and if it is going to freeze !
Or, you can drain it about half way...blow out your lines ,drain the filter and shut down your timer....next year you can drain it and fill with fresh water and a start up kit.
How much does it cost to have a pool maintenance guy clean your pool?
On average how much do they charge to clean an average size inground pool? Also how often should they clean it? Im asking out of curiosity because my uncles thinking about purchasing a house with a pool and would rather have someone do it professionally and know the facts before purchasing one.
It is a monthly process, and usually runs in the $75.00 per mth range.
How much should someone charge a customer for simple pool maintenance?
How much should I charge someone for simple pool cleaning?
(Scooping out bugs and stuff with a net, scrubbing the sides of the pool with a sponge)?
How much should I charge if I'm working with another person? (If I do pool cleaning with a friend??)
I pay my pool guy 150 a month (he shows up every friday). But he also takes care of my hot tub, all my chemicals, and the pump/filter mechanisms. For just skimming and scrubbing, you'd be lucky to get 20 bucks a pool, probably more like 10 - 15.
Can I do my own home pool maintenance?
I'm a soon to be first time home owner with an in ground pool. I'm no slouch, I can soak up information and dedicate a good amount of time to this...if it's worth it. So is this something an average person can do? Or is this best left to a pro?
It can be an easy task. Find a pool supply store and take the measurements to them. They want your business and most are more than happy to give you all the info you need to successfully do your own maintenance. They will also test your water free and tell you what chemicals you need.
I recommend for a home pool you use baquacel, instead of chlorine based pool chemicals. Works better and no chlorine smell--talk to the pool supply people, we had algae probs with chlorine products, and shocking all the time with high levels of chlorine was a pain-plus you could not swim. Once we switched to the baquacel, never had any algae, and the water was always crystal clear.
What do I need for pool maintenance?
I'm moving into a home that comes with one of those pools connected to a hot tub and I haven't any idea what I need to buy chemical wise.
How do you maintain a pool?
Should I buy a cover for seasons it isn't in use?
Note: The whole point is so that I don't have to hire a pool cleaner for something I can do myself.
Definitely the easiest thing is hiring a cleaner and a lot of times it ends up being cheaper, especially the way chlorine prices have been climbing. But if you're intent on doing yourself you will need:
-Chlorine (tablets are the easiest way to do it)
-Floater for the chlorine
-Test strips to measure chemical levels
-Stabilizer (for stabilizing chlorine)
-Muriatic acid and soda ash to adjust pH
Those are the very basics, but you might need other things like a shock of some kind (there are several different kinds depending on types of algae being treated), algaecides, phosphate removers, etc.
I always found that a good self cleaner (Hayward Pool Vac was my favorite) was a lot more useful than a cover. What normally happens with a cover is that it sits on the pool for an extended period of time and gets covered in leaves and dirt and things and as soon as you want to use the pool you remove the cover and dump all of that in. Then you have to spend a good deal of time fishing it all out and waiting for it to be filtered. Also, this would almost require an immediate filter cleaning on a cartridge filter, depending on the amount of dirt and dust on the cover.
What's a good website for all of my pool maintenance questions?
I want a site that shows photos or graphics of the different pool systems out there (the filter, pump, etc.) and how to operate them.
Try this one:

i need help on above ground pool maintenance?
3 days ago we bought an above ground pool (about 3 ft. deep) and i let the filter run and put a chlorine tablet in a floating disc, but is there anything else that i need to do or buy to make sure that the pool stays clean and clear?? the manuals weren't very informative. i appreciate any help.
buy some pool shock and shock it about once a week, instructions on shock container. Back wash pool filter when pressure gets 2 or 3 lbs. above normal which is about 14 to 17 lbs. You'll need to vacuum or at least sweep the bottom and side when silt settles down there. Be carefull what tablets you put in floater had one blow the lid 30 ft. in the air when it built up pressure. It will boil out the bottom when it's the wrong one read instuctions carefully
Professional pool maintenance - what to expect?
I recently bought my first home with a built-in pool. I have a weekly pool guy coming to maintain it on Mondays. By Thursday, the pool has a greenish color and clarity is reduced. On Monday, he spends about 10 minutes adding chems, a little brushing and netting, and leaves. By Tuesday the water quality is better, Wednesday pretty good, then it goes downhill from through weekend.
Shouldn't the pool be nice and clear for more than a couple of days? I don't have leaves or debris, my filter pump operates daily from noon til 8pm and the robot cleaner works for 2 hours each day.
Even without a nice blue hat  you should be getting better service than this.
If the pool doesn't stay crystal clear between visits then he isn't doing his job.
My suggestion is to get rid of him, take a sample of water to your local pool store and have them test it for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates
Don't purchase anything from the store right now, just bring the results back and post them here or email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and I'll be more than happy to help you get your pool cleared up and on a maintenance schedule that takes less than 20 mintues a day to maintain a crystal clear and health pool all by yourself.
Please include the gallon size of the pool, chemicals you have on hand (ingredients are best but name brands will work too), filtration system type (sand, cartridge, DE), chlorination system (pucks in the skimmer, floating chlorinator, or automatic feeder), and the above readings.
The chemicals you may or may not need are as follows:
Calcium chloride
Chlorine (calcium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite.. which I'll explain the difference between)
Baking soda
20 Mule Team Borax
Muriatic acid
Cyanuric acid (Stabilizer)
and polyquat (Algaecide 60 no matter what name brand).
Chemicals alone will cost you less than $200 for the entire season, so you'll start saving money immediately depending on how much your pool guy is charging per month now.
BTW, I don't charge for services or help.... just in case you were wondering. I'm just happy to be of help to anyone with pool problems.
