Eisenschmidt Pool reopens after completion of repair project St. Helens Chronicle

ST. HELENS - The Eisenschmidt Pool in St. Helens, reopened on Oct. 3 after undergoing a remodel to correct a failing section of the pool's concrete surface.

The larger of the two pools at the facility is now equipped with a tile surface. The smaller pool was converted to tile in 2010.

Anne Scholz Eisenschmidt general manager, said both of the concrete pools were painted in 2008, but the paint did not hold up and properly sustain the pools.

"We chose tile because concrete moves and cracks," Scholz said. "It's a permanent solution to the concrete problem we were having."

The project took approximately one month to complete.

Eisenschmidt pool offers swim lessons, aerobics classes, open swim and is where the St. Helens High School swim team works out.

The pool was built in 1939 during the Great Depression as part of the Work Project Administration, a relief program aimed at getting unemployed people back to work by having them work on a wide variety of projects. The Eisenschmidt pool is one of eight WPA pools left in the U.S., Scholz said.

what type of ownership should a swimming pool repair have and why? Sole proprietorship, corp,or partnership?

I need to know what type of ownership should a pool repair shop have? Should it be either Sole proprietorship, Partnership, or Corperation? Also I need to know the reason why?

SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP

Advantages

You're the boss.
It's easy to get started.
You keep all profits.
Income from business is taxed as personal income.
You can discontinue your business at will.

Disadvantages

You assume unlimited liability.
The amount of investment capital you can raise is limited.
You need to be a generalist. Retaining high-caliber employees is difficult.
The life of the business is dependent on the owner's.

PARTNERSHIP

Advantages

Two heads are better than one.
It's easy to get started.
More investment capital is available.
Partners pay only personal income tax.
High-caliber employees can be made partners.

Disadvantages

Partners have unlimited liability.
Partners must share all profits.
The partners may disagree.
The life of the business is limited.

CORPORATIONS

Advantages

Stockholders have limited liability.
Corporations can raise the most investment capital.
Corporations have unlimited life.
Ownership is easily transferable.
Corporations utilize specialists.

Disadvantages

Corporations are taxed twice.
Corporations must pay capital stock tax.
Starting a corporation is expensive.
Corporations are closely regulated by government agencies.

The legal structure of your business really depends on your current situation. Note though that you can easily change your legal structure as your circumstances change. For example, you can start as a sole proprietor now. But after you get several contracts, you can change its structure into a partnership or LLC or Corporation.

What is the best way to repair pool table slate.?

I have a 8' Fischer 1 piece slate pool table, the slate is cracked and chipped with some holes as large as 1" across. Is there any better product to use to repair other than auto body putty or bees wax.

We always use beeswax to fill slate seams and fine cracks over other substances. It’s fast, clean and it does the best job. Use the small torch to melt the wax on the seam. Hold it about 5 inches over the seam and let it drip onto the table seam. We recommend using a torch to melt the beeswax for the table joints because a lighter will not generate enough heat to spread the wax on the table. Use a paint scraper to scrape the wax off. When you finish there is virtually no wax left on the table except for the wax right in the seam. Wax will also move with the table which will keep your seam sealed longer. Also, Keep in mind that regular wax is not sufficient for sealing seams, I would suggest using a special wax that is designed for this billiard slate purpose. Billiard table wax is much harder and more durable than normal bees wax because it has resin in it. Use wax for small cracks, seams etc. but for major cracks use Slate Repair Glue to repair broken or cracked pieces of slate. This glue is a must have when it comes to cracked pieces of slate!! It has a thick consistency which is needed of gluing slate. Also, use Kerr-Vel Slate Patch for larger holes, chips etc. Extreme accuracy and hardness make Kerr Vel Mix ideal for filling deep chips and holes. Small seams and tiny chips can be filled with beeswax, but the bigger stuff needs something with a lasting harder substance. We like this filler because it doesn't shrink like plaster or putty does. Plus it has a strength of 12,000 pounds per square inch when dry; not a bad replacement for missing areas of slate.

All three of these products can be obtained online at:

Good Luck with your repairs!

buy a new one

yes, but you will have to work somewhat quickly: I like to use "Fixall"
this is the same stuff I use to fix concrete, especially on the smooth surface like a garage floor
but of course remember you will probably want to do the entire felt after you are done.

What could I estimate the average cost of a pool repair to be?

I was just wondering how to estimate, just a ballpark figure, how much it would take to completely replace a pool lining?

1200.00 for the liner, 1000.00 for labor and that includes some minor base touch up work not re-applying vermiculite.

You need to be more specific. It depends on the size of the pool and whether you are going to have it done or do it yourself.

No size given or preference in thickness or pattern vs. no pattern, so you're looking at 900 - 1600 dollars on the liner and minor parging on the bottom ought to be included. That's all in, including labour and not taxes. Those are the rates north of Toronto.

Does anyone know about pool repair? Anyone a contractor?

I am replastering the pool at my apartment building and the contractor wants to move the drain from the bottom of the pool to the side (about 2 feet under the water). Has anyone heard of this? Is it neccessary? Thanks so much!

Do you mean move it and leave it there??? What is his reasoning ??

The true sense of a drain is to allow water to run to the lowest point and exit. If he wants to move this "drain", it could be for other reasons. The water in a pool must circulate to be filtered. With the drain at the lowest point in the pool, debris could clog the opening and damage the pump unit. On above ground systems the "drain" and inlet are both at water level. You will have to vacuum the bottom more frequently with moving the drain, but debris will not clog the drain and cause damage to your pump unit.

You must be careful with this if raised to just below water level, it is often a problem and people with long hair can get it sucked into the drain and tangled around the grill and drowning.
I have never experienced a drain above the bottom of the pool floor and would question the need to move it and look at alternatives to not moving it.

Dave

Will my home insurance cover pool repair?

I live in Florida, and my pool is leaking. A friend looked at it and said it looks like a suction line leak, and would be pretty expensive to fix, since they would have to dig up my yard to fix it. I wonder if my home insurance will cover it?

The quickest way to know will be to contact you insurance agent. He/she will know what type of policy you bought and the coverage limits. My personal opinion is that type of repair is not covered. Almost all homeowners insurance offers indemnity against damage and injury claims and not maintenance issues. Having said that, how did your friend determine it appeared to be a suction line leak? Are you simply losing water from the pool? What kind of pool is it, gunite or fiberglas? Either could have developed a leak in the pool shell through which water is escaping. Check your local pool supply store for a leak test kit. Is there air in the system, visible through the sight glass on your pump reservoir? If so, open the system and check the seal under the sight glass. I've had to replace mine before. Check that there are no visible signs of leaks in any of the plumbing you can see. If none of that detects your problem, start looking around for any wet spots along the edge of the pool and between the pool and the equipment. If there is, you may have found your problem. I hope this helps. If not, you've done just about everything you can by yourself. After you've done all you can, try contacting a couple of pool service companies and compare charges to troubleshoot and fix your problem. Times are tough and many companies are willing to discount their rates or offer flat rates per job.

call your ins co

Probably not unless it was caused by a tree falling on it, or unless you bought special coverage.

Not likely. House insurance usually only covers damage from things like wind or storm damage. It is not a maintenance contract.

i own a pool company and your insurance policy may have what is called a rider clause( add on) i would check that first.a lot of people here have insurance on their pool just to cover that too check on that also

Here http://www.InsuranceFreeTip.info/insurance-for-free.htm ,You should find more useful suggetions and tips for your question.Good Luck for you.

I work for home warranty companies as a pool technician.....the companies I have worked with (4 different home warranty companies) cover only repairs located ABOVE ground level

I have a crack in my fiberglass pool steps. Is there an easy repair?

This is an in ground pool so, the repair would have to be from the top only, otherwise the cement would have t be torn up.

The obvious answer is a fiberglass patch. Roughen the surface around the crack, coat with resin mixed with hardener, apply the cloth, sand smooth and finish with a coat or two of resin/hardener. Normally you use woven glass cloth, but for this application, I would experiment with other synthetic fabrics first, to make sure the resin doesn't dissolve them. A glass fiber patch and bare feet, doesn't sound good to me. Properly applied, the cloth should be totally embedded in the resin, but I would feel safer, with soft cloth in case of a new break. Ideally a fiberglass patch would be repeated on the back side of the crack. multiple layers of cloth and resin my be applied.

Drain the pool water to a level below the area you need repaired. Go to your hardware store and ask for a fiberglass repair kit. The kit should contain: A specially weaved cloth designed for fiberglass repair, resin and hardener. Cut the cloth to overlap the crack by at least two inches all around. Next mix up the resin and hardener and apply to cloth making sure the cloth doesn't move from the effected area. Once the resin and hardener are mixed you have a limited time to apply this mixture before it starts to get hot. The chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener is what causes it to get hot and harden so it's important you have everything where you want it to be prior to your mixing these two agents.

Pool repair question, vinyl liner leaking, temporary fix?

I have a 4 foot above ground pool, and a very wet corner of my backyard, I believe I have located the slow leak. There's an area where the sidewall meets the bottom, where the sand seems to have been washed away or compressed, about the size of a softball. I put on my scuba gear for a longer/closer look and it looks like (because of the depression) the liner has been stretched very thin and is seeping. I'd like to make it thru the summer so then I can empty it and replace the liner in the off-season. What type/kind of patch can I use that can be applied under water and will stick well? I got some vinyl patches at my local pool store and they were crap, didn't work well. Any kind of underwater paste, glue, patches, etc?
windancerhil: Thanks, so I will look around for an underwater repair kit from a different place. After I round out the corners and peel off the paper backing, should the patch be very sticky? Or does the water "activate" the glue and I have to rub the patch for a few minutes to work out the air/water to get it to stick? Any particular brand of type of vinyl repair kit I should be looking for? Thanks again.

I have used underwater vinyl patch kits for years and never had any problems. Perhaps the ones you got were old. Try again with a different source. Unless the leak is in a seam the patch should work. Just be sure to cut the piece your attaching in either a circle or oval shape (no square corners.)

Is there a regulatory board that oversees pool repair companies?

oNot any pol board, but they probably need a general contractors license for any work done over around $500.
