The Biggest Resort You Never Heard Of Forbes

Outside of Southern California, not a whole lot of people I know are familiar with Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort.

That’s a real shame.

I just got back from my first visit, and I keep wondering how this remains such a secret – considering that it is huge, with impressive amenities, and has been operated as a resort for nearly 70 years. Before that, it was working ranch for another 130 years.

Talk about your hidden gems: the ranch spans over 10,000-acres and is just off the main street in Solvang, a Scandinavian-themed and very popular tourist town in the northern part of Santa Barbara County. It is pretty easy to get to, just two and a half hours from LA, and about 45 from the Santa Barbara airport, in what Californians affectionately call the Central Valley, otherwise best known for its wines, especially pinot noirs. The wine country movie Sideways was set and filmed just 5 minutes down the road.

Alisal has been a ranch for almost two centuries, and once turned out some of the world’s finest thoroughbreds, including Kentucky Derby winner Flying Ebony. As soon as it opened to the public, it began to attract an A-List Hollywood crowd: Doris Day was a frequent guest and Clark Gable had his wedding here. But in recent years it has gotten little press, despite having facilities few resorts can match, including two 18-hole golf courses, the River and the Ranch, a full spa, state of the art fitness center (and yes, yoga classes), tennis center, and plenty of fishing: while many resorts have a stocked pond for anglers the lake at Alisal is over a mile long and they gladly provide boats to guests.

Where can I find a Romantic Resort in Florida?

My Fiance' and I are getting married in 4 months and we are looking for a romantic resort in Florida for our honeymoon. We would like to be in walking distance to the beach. Any suggestions?

Try this spot on Anna Maria Island.

Amelia Island Plantation! Definitely!

What is the most romantic hotel / resort in Puerto Vallarta?

Hi,

What is the most romantic hotel or resort in Puerto Vallarta? We're a young couple that would like to walk around the town during day and relax with the sunset at night.

Thanks for any tips!

If you want to stay north of Vallarta,
Westin Regina Hotel, in the Marina area.
If you want to stay south of Vallarta,
Hotel Dreams.

I like Hotel Dreams,
Go to Youtube and type Hotel Dreams Puerto Vallarta in order to see the rooms, spectacular beach and public areas.

Best luck.

Try going to www.jsgetaway.com there are many puerto vallarta vacation deals and they show pics of all of the hotels and what you get when you stay. There are also spa hotels that are very romantic too. Just click on the extras button and it will show you the mexico spas they are great. I am actually going to try out one of the spas the end of the month
Hope this helps
Good Luck

It would be difficult to beat the Westin Hotel & Spa:

I would also recommend dinner here:
(ask at your hotel for directions)

What is the most romantic (hopefully inexpensive) place to stay at Walt Disney World Resort?

I'm looking for a romantic disney resort (hopefully not too expensive) any suggestions?

We're going to EPCOT in November for our One Year anniversary and want to make something special out of it.

Are there any romantic restaurants at EPCOT or at any of the resorts?

If you're going to EPCOT, stay in EPCOT. The convenience is so worth it. The resorts there are within walking distance to the park. The Boardwalk and the Yacht and Beach Club are very nice resorts. You can also choose between the Swan or the Dolphin.
These are deluxe resorts, but I have heard the Beach Club does have a few efficiencies. That is worth asking about. As far as the Swan and Dolphin you can get some good online specials every once in a while.

personally i think that the french restaurant is very romantic in epcot and the coral reef restaurant is as well.
you don't have to stay in a particular hotel to go to eat at one of their restaurants so i suggest eating at the california grill in the contemporary.

the most romantic of the deluxe hotels in my opinion
the contemporary
the grand floridian
the Polynesian
their prices start at $225 per nigt

most romantic of the moderate hotels in my opinion
the port orleans french quarters
the caribbean beach hotel
their prices start at $149 per night.

i don't really think the value hotels are romantic they are more like being a kid again fun. they have arcades and they have kid and adult friendly themes to them.
i like pop century the best of the value resorts.
they start at $82 per night.

It's not on disney property but its near disney. It's called the gayloard palms hotel. In november they have their christmas shows, ice skating and great chrismas entertainment. Inside is really nice.

the french pavillion. also, you could stay at the swan or the dolphin. but i don't think they're inexpensive.

I would suggest The Grand Floridian or The Polynesian, but they are the most expensive Disney World hotels. They offer rooms with a Magic Kingdom view!

There are many good restaurants at Disney. Reservations could be made 180 days in advance, so my top pick might not be available, as it is so popular, especially for romantic dinners. My favorite restaurant for romance in Epcot is LeCellier in Canada followed by San Angel Inn at Mexico. You can see menus at:
http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm#epc

I love the Yacht and Beach Club, but they are expensive like the monorail resorts. I've stayed at the Contemporary and don't find it romantic at all, but the Grand Floridian or Polynesian would be. I also think Animal Kingdom Lodge ($225) or Wilderness Lodge ($225) are good choices, and they cost less than the deluxe resorts ($325+) but more than moderates. Next choice is the moderates like Port Orleans, Caribbean Beach, and Coronado Springs ($149). The value resorts are not romantic in the least, and you'd be better staying off Disney property than staying in one of those. Here's a photo gallery of the resorts: http://allears.net/acc/gallery.htm

Stop by Guest Relations and get free anniversary pins to wear.

Absolutely! EPCOT has some of the best food in all of Disney World Property. Coral Reef is a fantastic restaurant if you like seafood. The ambiance cannot be beat either! Meals can be pricey, so choose a dish you both love and split it! Order their seafood bisque or a salad to bulk up the meal. You'll have a romantic dinner for less money.

Another great option in EPCOT is Chefs De France! The restaurant glows at night with candles and nice lighting. The food is scrumptious - again a great place to share a plate to reduce cost. They offer plenty of food.

The Cantina De San Angel, located in Mexico's Pavilion is another wonderful choice for ambiance (a "night" sky by the river) and food! This is the least expensive option of the three I mentioned so feel free to order your own plates at this location and still stick to your budget! Their tacos and margaritas are fantastic!

There is, unfortunately, no romantic, inexpensive WDW resort close to Epcot. Of the Disney World resor close to Epcot, the Boardwalk is lovely small, and romantic, but quite expensive. The Yacht and Beach Clubs, because of their size, are not so romantic.

The most romantic resort at WDW that is not a deluxe resort is Port Orleans French Quarter. This is a "moderate" resort. Of the value resorts, the most romantic is All-Star Music. Neither is in walking distance of Epcot, but WDW buses will take you there!

To help you balance cost vs. what you get, see this page on what you get by WDW resort price class: http://yourfirstvisit.net/planning-your-first-family-trip/where-to-stay/next-best-resort-choices/walt-disney-world-resort-features-by-price-category/

Hope this helps and have a wonderful visit! Dave

any tips on what romantic resort me and my girlfriend should go this year?

looking for a decent priced resort to bring my girlfriend this year?we love eating out at good resteraunts and doing shopping with nice weather!
hey fly girl...would be beaches we would be after

Walt Disney World Resort in Vero Beach, Florida
I was just there the other day and it was very nice.
Not only do they have hotel rooms they have cottages. I'm not sure of the price but I would check it out if I were you. & very nice sunny weather to accompany it.

Depends on where you want to be .
Cities, Mountains or beaches ..... then look around where you like to go .

Beaches :

Florida southeast (Keys) or southwest (Naples).
Bahamas, Jamaica, Cancun, and Aruba.

All have wonderful resorts and fabulous white sandy beaches.

Sandals, Club Med, Disney village, are very well known resorts, but there are many resorts that offer different amenities for their guests. All depends on what you are looking for .

Wow...nice question...it depends on how far you can go...
I would say THAILAND - KOH SAMUI ISLAND - RENAISSANCE RESORT & SPA....very romantic...for example every night you will find roses on your bed...
Look for information on:
www.samui-hotels.com/renaissance
www.samui-holidays.com
www.kohsamui.com
www.kohsamui.net

Go to Virginia.
Their bumper stickers say "Virginia is for lovers".

Does anyone know where A romantic resort I can take my girlfriend to in Door County Wisconsin?

I want a suite with a whirlpool tub and a king size bed. The rates of the room is $400 and up.

I thought just being in Door County was romantic ;)

Check out this link: "Plan the Perfect Door County Romantic Getaway" - http://www.doorcountynavigator.com/html/getaway.html

Can't give personal stamp of approval, but it sounds like where you need to look!

I want to go into the mountains from San Francisco, where is the closest town for a romantic B&B or resort?

We are going to fly into San Francisco, and don't want to spend our entire week driving. We want to get to a romantic B&B, resort, or cabin in the mountains, something private and with beautiful views. We have no idea where to start, (we're from the midwest and this will be our first trip there). Anybody have suggestions for us?

Oh, man there are so many places you can go. First, it depends on which mountains you're talking about. There are mountains north, south, and east of the bay.

The coast ranges provide some of the most stunning views and driving along Hwy 1. Here is a gorgeous ocean-view place to stay 5 hrs south of SF. You can drive along the ocean-front highway most of the way:
http://www.treebonesresort.com/

North of SF, Mendocino has tons of B&Bs. Just Google it and you'll find tons. Before Mendocino is Stinson Beach, another great sleepy town. A drive around Tamales Bay and Point Reyes is one of my favorite things to do.

Napa county is pretty mountainous compared to the midwest, so do consider it. Calistoga and Sonoma are nice, more secluded towns near Napa. These are probably the best mix of close and awesome. (1 hr from SF)

In the east the Sierras offer tons of places. Grass Valley is a cute gold rush town with B&Bs. If you go far into the Sierras, though, you might hit snow this time of year.

You can just google all the places I've mentioned or look for B&Bs at their city sites. Have fun!

EDIT: I forgot to tell you about one of my favorite places in the world! A thatch-roof inn with a cozy restaurant, pub, and game room for guests downstairs, with elizabethan-style rooms, four-poster beds with tapestry curtains, balconies and full english breakfast delivered to your room. the beach is at the end of the lane and it's all surrounded by muir woods, the famous redwoods of CA. stay there!!! (1 hr from SF) http://www.pelicaninn.com/

EDIT: Oh yeah, here's another option for staying on the coast. You can get private rooms at this lighthouse hostel. I stayed there once in the communal part. It was nice. The private rooms might actually be in the lighthouse (?) you can call and ask. They have a little campfire by the lighthouse on the cliff and it's so amazing to sit at night getting cozy with the roar of the waves below. Check out the photo gallery. It's gorgeous (~25 mi south of sf) http://www.norcalhostels.org/montara/

Here is a resource for more lighthouses in case that one's full or anything: http://www.rudyalicelighthouse.net/CalLts/CalLts.htm

Here's a few in Pescadero (about an hour's drive south of SF).
http://www.ca-bnb-review.com/?n=pescadero&id=1051&t=city

About 90 minutes south of SF, this is a charming B&B in the Santa Cruz mountains. It's rooms in an inn (as opposed to separate cabins):
http://www.fairviewmanor.com/rooms.html

And about an hour north there are some lovely places in the Russian River area:
http://www.sonoma.com/lodging/russian_river.html

You might want to take a look at the Evergreen Bed and Breakfast, Pleasanton, California, 45 minutes from San Francisco. Bills itself as an ‘intimate hiding place’, a relaxing weekend retreat, an unforgettable honeymoon...next to the Augustin Bernal Park and Pleasanton Ridgeland, with hiking and biking trails criss-crossing the area, plenty of greenery and a natural landscape.

9104 Longview Drive, Pleasanton, CA 94588; (925) 426-0901.

you can go north into napa or sonoma,

or

you can go south into big sur. which is what i recommend.

Best romantic resort in Phoenix or Scottsdale?

Can anyone suggest a romantic (husband and wife) resort in either Scottsdale or Phoenix? Looking to dine, stay the night, and then do massage in the morning. Thanks

http://thescottsdaleresort.com/
This one is a really nice relaxing resort to stay at. It is kind of hidden away and they have a fine dining restaurant called the Palm Court and a wonderful relaxing spa. The have casitas that are gorgeous. Their regular rooms a beautiful also. I loved it there.
They actually have a package called the Romance package. Check it out and all their other packages too.
http://thescottsdaleresort.com/Accommodations/accomodations_packages.asp#romantic

My wife and I stayed at the the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort. It was wonderful. We stayed in one of the Casita Suites (~850 sq ft). The most relaxing weekend away from the kids. Again, it was wonderful. The have a spa and restaurant as well as golfing. Hope you enjoy yourselves.

Hyatt Gainey Ranch
7500 E. DoubleTree Ranch Road
Scottsdale, AZ 85258

This is a great resort with a lot of privacy for you and your wife. It has three romantic restaurants, and gondola rides around the lake each night. Spa Avania was just recently built, and is beautiful.

i went to the fairmont princess too, and it was very relaxing. i was in a casita as well. the only thing about the casitas is that i remeber there being 2 full beds and a pullout couch, not any king beds, so you may want to check that out if you get a casita.

The Pointe South Mountain

I think that the Marriot Desert Ridge is running a special in their Spa right now. It is a fancy place with great views of the McDowells.
The Scottsdale Valley Ho is newly renovated and is in a cool hip cat feel to it. The rooms and ambience are fun and playful the spa is new and there are saturday Bellydance classes available so the ladies can treat their guy like a Sultan that night.
The Royal Palms is a swanky resort with some celebrity history. Nice spa and a complete luxurious romance feel for the resort.

It looks like you've got a good assortment of hotel recommendations in Scottsdale, so I thought I'd steer you to a trip I found at the place where I work that keeps you in Phoenix for the weekend. It lists 3 romantic hotels (my favorite is the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort And Spa). Check it out for some things to do there (like listening to Jazz in a botanical garden) and has a couple of restaurants (one fancy, one casual) in the itinerary.

I'm looking for romantic amibiance and somewhere that's not to far from the touristy areas. What would be the best romantic hotel and why. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

La Valencia Hotel, nothing else. Hotel Del Coronado is closest alternative beyond La Jolla.
