Startup Sauna Goes Hunting in Siberia BusinessWeek

Antti Ylimutka has just returned to his home in Helsinki after a trip to the far-flung reaches of Siberia. In particular, he was visiting the city of Novosibirsk. On the unforgiving plains of central Russia and closer to Mongolia than Moscow, the city, he admits, is not exactly a stop on the tourist trail, even if it is Russia’s third-largest metropolis and about the same size as Philadelphia or Vienna.

“Let’s just say at 2 a.m., when it’s cold and dark, you really feel like you are in Siberia,” he says. “Novosibirsk was voted the world’s ugliest city five times in a row.”

The visit wasn’t meant to be part of a commentary on the city’s architecture, however. It was about trying to find startups.

CRUCIAL BREEDING GROUND

Ylimutka acts as the “wingman” for Startup Sauna , a Northern European accelerator program that is starting to extend its reach deep into Russian territory in an effort to unearth talent. And even though Novosibirsk isn’t officially in Europe at all, Startup Sauna sees cities like it as a crucial breeding ground for future generations of world-changing startups.

Does a sauna add value to your home?

My boyfriend just bought a house that has a small sauna in the basement. He won't ever use the sauna, so he wants to take it out and make that space into a closet for his work clothes. I told him that the sauna may add value to his home and to dismantle it might be a bad idea. Am I right? Thank you!

I asked a realtor once about having a pool in the backyard, and that I thought it would add value to the house. She said it would not. That pools increase insurance and maintenance on the home/property and does not add value to the home. That is a close as I can help. I am not sure about the sauna.

A sauna is quite a niche item, so not all of the prospective buyers will class it as adding value. Do you have closets already, would changing it into a closet add value to the house? How large is the sauna? If it is large would another use of the room add more value? Does it join onto another room that could be extended?

You must also consider maintenance and servicing costs over time, as a prosepctive buyer will consider this. Although that said it may add perceived value to your home and be a great 'hook' which stands your home out from the others. Again depending on whether all of the houses in your street have saunas too.

What are the effects of entering a dry sauna before exercise?

I go to the gym regularly, and recently I started doing the dry sauna. At the gym I like to run, swim, or do the elliptical. Lately I have been swimming almost every day as part of my workout. I like to do the sauna before I swim. Is it better to enter the sauna before or after excercise, and why? What are the effects of entering the sauna before exercise?

Dehydration.

What materials are best for Sauna door that opens to steam shower?

We're doing a residential bathroom where a 4'x6' Sauna Room opens up into a Steam Shower. I've heard it's best to avoid wood in the Steam Shower, but what can we do when the Sauna interior is Cedar, and the Steam Shower must be all glass & ceramic tile? Will a Wood Framed Glass Door hold up over time? Appreciate any advice anyone might have!

I expect a glass door with a frame made from cedar, cypress ,redwood or black locust would all do the job. The other option would be aluminum and glass though it will cost you. Have some space in the grooves that hold the glass panels so that the wood can expand and contract, they even make things called space balls that keep the panel centered in this type of situation.
Best of luck,

What is the benefit of using a sauna room or sauna suit?

Does it make you lose weight. I read somewhere that a session in the sauna is like running for 30 minutes. Is this true. How long should you sit in a sauna?

1. temporary weight loss due to water loss

2. some level of muscle relaxation

3. stress relief

I think 20 minutes is the limit unless its not too hot.

im sorry that just sounds rediculous to me. maybe if your exercising while in a sauna, that sounds more realistic for burning cals. i heard it just removes water. its more like peeing than it is running. hear, drink a whole bunch of water till you have to be. sit in a sauna 4 30 mins and then see if u have to pee afterwardss. HEY! WHATa great science experiment!

What is the difference between a dry sauna and a wet sauna?

i moved to this cool place that has both a wet and dry sauna and i don't know what the difference is besides the heat. i mean like which is for what use? What is the difference of using them?

Dry sauna you don't throw water on the stove. Very lame, as there isn't much variety in the feeling. It feels like getting into a car that has been sitting in the sun for a few hours.

Wet sauna you throw water on the stove. You can throw more water or less water depending on how hot you want it.

Go for the wet sauna.

when I had a bronchial problem I was advised to sit in a wet (steam) sauna as this would help open up my lungs and help be breath better.
I don't know if that helps.

What good does a sauna or whrilpool hot tub offer after a workout?

I workout at a gym about three times a week, both on cycle and free-weight. After a workout, I spend some time in the whirlpool hot tub -- because it feels good. The gym also has a dry and wet sauna. Besides feeling good, do these offer any benefits?

You get rid of all the Lactic Acid faster than just having a shower or a rest. A sauna is also an excellent way to relax.

.

Recent research done in Japan performed a study in mice. The mice were placed on a wheel and set to exercise at a lab-controlled time and intensity. Half of them were left to recover normally, and the other half were placed in a warm sauna-like environment. The mice who were placed in the warm environment had an average size increase of 30% in their calf muscle over the mice that were not allowed to rest in the heat post-workout. The reason for this was the fact that the heat triggers the body to release specific proteins that are ideal for recovery and building muscle. Since the recovery is much improved, the tightness that is normally experience after a workout is relieved and people don't feel as sore the next day.

What are the benefits and negatives of a sauna?

I have recently started going for a swim and a sauna after work and am curious about this. Please tell me the pros and cons of sitting in the mega hot environment of a Sauna.

Besides the previous answers there is one negative and that is that saunas are dangerous for people with high blood pressure and/or heart problems.

Severe dehydration can also cause kidney stones so remember to drink plenty of water before and after a sauna.

What are the benefits of using a sauna and how often should one use it?

I used a sauna last night and loved it so I wonder how often I should use it and how much it too much?

Besides relaxation one key benefit of the sauna is a marked increase in your body's production of HGH.
Once a day for 20 minutes following your workouts is enough.
If you experience light headedness or stop sweating, stop immediately.
Making sure you stay hydrated is the important thing.
Enjoy!

How do I build a wood burning sauna?

I have sufficient dry wood and would like to enjoy a sauna. But I need to find out how to build the stove.

a wood burning stove would help. why don't you google it.
