Chewing on a range of tasty ways to enjoy the nutrient-rich green. Monterey County Weekly

These days, it can be hard to get my head out of the dreamy tomato clouds long enough to think about the hardy crop staples we need to be planting for a winter-long harvest. But greens like kale, chard and collards have to be sown now so they have a chance to establish and root with the last of the fall sunlight, and continue growing and giving green goodness until next spring.

My favorite is kale, which is usually wasted as garnish around a salad bar, when it should be your main component.

Brassica family kale is a descendent of wild cabbage grown and eaten by peasants in Europe until the end of the Middle Ages, when the more desired head cabbage – with a longer shelf life and a more delicate flavor – was introduced.

The word kale originates from a word the Scots made up to describe rural life: “kailyard,” or kale yard, because in the country everyone had kale growing in their yard.

While several types of greens are on the top 10 of the ANDI score – aggregate nutrient density index, an analysis of the most nutrient rich types of produce created by nutritionist Dr. Joel Fuhrman – kale occupies the top position with collards and watercress. (Chard, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and arugula also make the list.)

Where do you get the outer seaweed wrap for sushi?

I think it's called makizushi or something... I can't find it anywhere!
I meant Nori not makizushi, sorry my bad. And I mean anywhere in a physical store, not online. Thanks
Ok good, we have a Whole Foods store nearby :)
Thanks!

Asian store, Trader Joe , whole foods.

asian food stores

You need an Asisn store like in China town.If there aint none where you live go on the internet and oerder online but check the phone book Im sure there is some place .Even a Japanese resturaunt may have it and will sale you just the sea weed yeah you got to deal with the asians baby

Whole food stores

Some supermarkets will carry it in the Asian food aisle, especially big markets that cater more to the "gourmet" than "budget" consumer. Whole foods carries it.

You can find nori at your local grocery store. I can find it at Albertson's or Von's. They usually have an Asian section and you can find it there as well as sushi rice and some other goodies.
Good Luck!

You can get it in any large supermarket in the asian food isle or in asian grocery stores. I found it at Ralphs, Vons, Trader Joe's, e.t.c.

chinese shop on bellaire blvd houaton .tx 77036 or call 7137727882 .on golden foods supermarket,

The wrap can be purchased at an International store, see
website for other uses of the seaweed.
http://blog.al.com/enjoy/2007/07/seaweed_can_do_more_than_wrap.html
Within the website, it mentions where to purchase it.

It is called "Nori" and you will find it in any Asian Market or in the International section of your larger grocery stores.

also look for asian food stores =)

Any of your bigger local grocey stores carry it in their asian aisle.

Can you do a seaweed wrap at home to help lose inches? I need to lose 2 inches for my upcoming wedding in May.

And if so where can I purchase this seaweed and serious reply's only!
I exercise 4 days a week I even stop eating fattening foods and I have lost 20lbs but I still need to lose two inches

yes..!
do it..!

Not unless you want to have the seaweed wrap wrapped around you for the rest of your life.

In addition to seaweed you need to exercise and eat sensibly. The exercise and diet is more likely to help lose inches than the seaweed - unless you eat it.

what's a seaweed wrap?

is that like sushi or something?

My sushi rice soaks my seaweed wrap SO MUCH that I can't cut the wrap because it's so wet. What am I doing?

...and the rice is fairly dry, so I'm not sure why the seaweed wrap is soaked? perhaps bad seaweed wrap....

When you lay down the nori (seaweed wrap), be sure that the cutting board and the rolling mat are dry. Then be sure the shiny side of the nori is facing down.

Your rice might seem fairly dry, but it must be too wet still. You're putting in too much su (or the rice vinegar mixture).

Roll the sushi tightly and let it sit for a little while before cutting.

These are my suggestions according to my experience making sushi, but maybe you'll get lucky and an actual sushi chef will respond to your question!

Good luck! :)

Are you cooling your rice completely? Using it while it's still warm will cause the remaining heat to give off steam, which in turn will make your nori soggy. And did the nori feel plenty dry before you started using it? They usually come with a silica gel pack in their package, to absorb excess moisture...maybe yours was missing it?

Leave the rice for at least one night before you do the sushi. It will help.

I also agree w/ the idea that you may be using too much rice vinegar mixture and that it may not be cooled off enough before use, but if that's not it, try toasting your nori(seaweed) in the oven on a low temp for a few minutes....I always do that before I start....good luck!!

You can also try to lightly toast the seaweed -- but make sure you don't burn it. Just dry it a little more. I've seen friends wave the seaweed sheet over the electric stove..

simply put the sushi roll into the fridge for half and hour then slice

good seaweed wrap,>>>>>>>bad cook

Sushi rice is not suppose to be served cold, it should still be slightly warm, so please dont chill your rice.

Are you properly steaming the rice off? It could be that you are not steaming the rice long enough or too long for that matter. The next step would be to adjust the amount of rice wine vinegar. If you have too much it may be making the rice soft.

And is your knife sharp? Make sure it is very sharp!

How do you wrap the body for a slimming seaweed body wrap?

I have some idea about the recipes and the other requirements, such as keeping the body and room warm to promote sweating...But can anyone explain the actual wrapping technique? What do you use for slimming wraps? Is there something better/wider than tensor bandages? Where do you start wrapping? At the ankles and work your way up? Your arms? Chest, neck, hips... And just how the heck are you supposed to wrap your butt cheeks anyway?? I've tried it, and I can't figure out how to get the bandages in complete contact with the one area that women most want cellulite/fat control: their a**.

Any tips??
If I wanted to go to a day spa, I would. But there are none in my immediate area that offer slimming wraps...just detoxifying seaweed, etc. Nah, I want the kind of wrap that they use compression bandages for. The closest one is 2 1/2 hours away! And it costs $230. Plus they recommend doing a series of wraps. I can't afford 3-6 wraps at $230 a pop! Especially not if I can get a friend to help me do them at home. I just want to know if anyone out there who has HAD one can give me some pointers about wrapping techniques??

I went to a Sybaritic Spa seminar and they recommended wrapping in cellophane. You can use saran wrap. Due to the width of the saran wrap, you can cut it in half to speed up the application.

Start at the ankles, wrapping around and working your way up. Overlap the wrap covering up the center of your previous wrap. Make sure the pressure of the wrap does not impede your circulation.

Check this link for more details on wrapping. I hope this helps.

Where can i buy seaweed from to use in a home made detox wrap??

I have been given a homemade recipe for a detox body wrap that uses seaweed but i can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have any idea where i can buy it from?
I live in South Wales but am happy to order it on line if there are no shops near that sell it
cheers joey x
Violetstar- you thick bitch just because a question is posted on the veggie section doesn't mean the asker is a veggie, Cheers everyone else for ur answers joey x

If you looking for sheet of seaweed using for Sushi then you can buy those at Tesco. It actually called 'Nori'. If there isn't any Tesco near yours, you might find in the health food shop or some Chinese(or Asian) shop in your town.
If you looking for dried seaweed ( it's really thick peace of dried seaweed and called 'Konbu'), I've seen at Sainsbury's and Hearth food shop.
If it's Japanese food and you know the name of it, you could order through the net from Japanese shop in London.
Sorry I might be talking about completely wrong thing for you, but anyway hope you'll find it somewhere in the end.
Good luck!

Oriental food shops, don't know if it works for the detox wrap, it certainly works to make sushi !

Try an Asian market???

maybe you should try MEAT you picky person!! and MAYBE you should try seeing a doctor for that seaweed addiction!! my brother and his girlfriend were vegan... IT WAS ANNOYING!!! so GET OVER IT!!! your not going to change the world by eating seaweed....

wat?

here's a link to them on ebay.

Body wraps really have nothing to do with food lifestyle. I suggest you ask this under Health and then under alternative medicine.

Try the seaweed shop

Alternitive to seaweed for sushi wrap?

Anyone know what to use in place of seaweed to wrap sushi? I saw it done on tv once but cant remember what they used and it wasn't egg crepe. Sorry if I spelled that wrong.

Rice paper?

It was probably soy wraps like this:
http://www.soywraps.com/

paper thin cucumber or daikon radish sheets, done by the katsuramuki technique. you need to be a sushi chef to perform the katsuramuki technique, however there is a hand cranked device that makes paper thin cucumber or daikon radish sheets. google jc-unitec, then go to the website called jc-unitec, then go to some site that has a device for vegetables, find a katsura in that site.

Rice paper, soy paper or romaine lettuce (for inside out rolls)

Curious about a seaweed wrap?

I'm intrested in going to the spa to get a seaweed wrap. I know that its a paste that they paint on. Will I have to be nude, and do they put it everywhere? Has anyone done this and had really good results? I'm just curious about what they will be doing.

i have done so.. yes you will be naked; maybe they will give you a disposable thong to put on. it goes from your feet to your neck. the person putting it on does not even look at you, though, because they have privacy and modesty rules. if you are a girl, you will definitely have a girl apply it. you get extremely good results, and it is totally worth it. just make sure the stuff is legit (most likely if you are paying alot, it is).
hope this helps! have fun! :)
