Dexia Breakup Gathers Pace as Belgium to Buy Consumer Bank BusinessWeek
(Updates with closing share price in fifth paragraph.)
Oct. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Dexia SA is being broken up as Belgium agreed to buy the local consumer-lending unit, ending a 15-year cross-border experiment with France after Europe’s debt crisis deepened.
The Belgian federal government will pay 4 billion euros ($5.4 billion) for the division and guarantee 60 percent of a so-called bad bank to be set up for Dexia’s troubled assets, Finance Minister Didier Reynders said at a press conference in Brussels today after a weekend of talks. Dexia will sell assets, including its Luxembourg unit and its French municipal lending arm, to give the bad bank capital to absorb future losses.
The dismantling of Dexia, once the world’s leading lender to municipalities, became inevitable after concern over European sovereign debt holdings caused its short-term funding to evaporate. Dexia’s bailout, three months after it passed European Union regulators’ stress tests, brings the region’s banking crisis from the continent’s periphery to its center.

Where are best grand stand seat at Belgium Spa GP?
I went last year and sat in Silver 2. We had an excellent view of La Source and Eau Rouge and were very close to a big screen. And the F1 village with all the merchandise stalls, food & drink places and toilets were right behind our grandstand. If we go again we will definitely book seats in Silver 2 again.
but if you are wanting to go for the Formula 1
(the only thing really worth going to see)..
i heard they were cancelling the Spa GP..
could be wrong..
but its what i heard.
The Spa Race is still on...30th August...you lucky b*gger!
It'll cost 550GBP or lower, but I'd go for the full monty...there might be cheaper around, but most is covered below>>>

Derives the word "spa" (wellness therapy) from the Belgium city Spa, or from Latin "sanus per aquam"?
Some people say "sanus per aquam" is no correct Latin.
The word comes from the city.
'Sanus per aquam' is good Latin - It means 'Healthy by means of water'.
There is more than one on-line etymology to be found that will explain that.

Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium...?
Spa-Francorchamps race circuit in Belgium on the 31st of may and 1st of June...
whats the weather gonna be like? anyone gonna be in that area?
xxx
It is in the Ardennes region of Belgium which is a little bit cooler than the rest of the country.
I've been there in September 4 or 5 years ago and the weather was very nice back then. But of course, you're in Belgium, so always be ready for rainy weather.
Generally June is a nice month in Belgium, but to be on the safe side, carry with you a light vest and an umbrella.
Go also to Luik (Liège), a nice city on the border of the Maas (Meuse).
The weather forcast says that it will be nice and sunny.
Go for it !
What are some nice SPA's in Belgium?

I want to find work in Belgium but not sure how to go about it.?
I will be done with massage therapy school in April of 2009. I'd love to go to Europe (preferably Belgium because that is where my brother lives) and work there in a spa or somewhere doing massage therapy. Does anybody know of websites I can get on to find employment and what sort of qualifications you have to have? Thanks so much in advance!
When you come to Belgium you need to have put up your residency and Visa. (depending from what country you are)
It helps when you know someone before you come like your brother as then you can put his name as a sponsor on the paper work.
When you are registered in a city have a visa and a pre-workpermit you can go for job hunting.
Professional Massage parlours are not that big in Belgium, we have some smaller ones that are run by the owner without no staff.
So finding a job in that sector will not be easy however you might set it up for your self as an independent. this could mean your degree that you will get in 2009 is not going to be sufficient and you need to take extra courses in business management.
Good luck, Belgium is a nice place to stay and to start a business, it is not easy but it gives satisfaction...
The Belgian government has a special department to find jobs for Belgians, but I don´t know whether this works for foreigners. Try vdab in google. Good luck
you just have to apply well i advance. Two month i'd say.
I lived in Bruxelles for 2 years and knew a lot of AmeriKans who came there thinking they were going to get a job... and they were ALL caught for working illegally.
Even the Post Office spies on you. If you rent an apartment and start receiving mail and your name is not on the 'list', you WILL be reported and you can expect a visit by the guys in the black trenchcoats and a visit to the Palais du Justice.
Where best to sit at the Spa Grand Prix?
I have a general admission ticket to see the grand prix in belgium, any ideas of where best to sit and the GA area covers 70% of the track. Also what time is best to get there, any ideas from people you have been there?
I'm going to Spa too but I have tickets for the Silver 2 grandstand which is just before Eau Rouge. I really hope the seats are ok!
I'm actually more worried about getting to the circuit from Brussels!
Hi I am going to Belgium for a week on Monday, staying in Brussels, anyone know of good things to do there?
My husband is on a course all week here, so i am free in the days to do what I wish really, obviously I have a budget! Has anyone been here before? I am into spas, beauty stuff, clothes shopping, but really anything will be considered. Especially free stuff!! Thanks for looking!
Stella is a marvelous beer to drink! It is 1000 times worth a Bud, yuk!
There is not much to see in Brussels apart from the historic centre but you take a walk in the suburbs (St Gilles, Ixelles) to admire the beautiful Art Nouveau buildings. You may also consider a day trip to Brugge, Ghent or Antwerp.
For shopping, head towards Avenue Louise for Belgian and international fashion shops. Rue Dansaert downtown is full of shops held by Belgian createurs. Place du Sablon is famous for antiques.
There are of course daily flea markets (http://www.belgiumtheplaceto.be/flea_markets.php)
For restaurants, you have the choice: www.resto.be will help you. I advise you the "Comme chez soi", the best restaurant of Brussels (https://www.commechezsoi.be/flash.htm). This one is expensive though...
The weather? Hummm, it's raining for the time being and next week, the weather is so so but temperatures are raising up to 26 C° (http://fr.weather.com/weather/local/BEXX0005?par=yahoo&site=fr.yahoo.com&promo=yahoo)
Have fun!
For spas: Royal La Rasante Wellness Club (http://www.aspria.be/page.aspx?language=2&id=284)
Apart from that, there is not much else to see.
For spas you might want to go to Spa, which is around 1 h and a half drive from Brussels.
Another beautiful places is BRUGGES (bruges) or also knows as the Venice of the NOrth. Hereto very easy to access by train and most of the city is pedestrian only. Now try to take your husband along here as it is REALLY a very romantic place to wander around. Do not forget to take a little boatride on the canals and this way you will get some background of the place. It also can be done at night when all is lit up. Also the food is superb. do not forget to try the different kinds of Belgian beers (if you like sweet beer try the KRIEK or GUEUZE. If your taste is more towards bitter beer you should try a KONINCK or a DUVEL) Another nice city to visit not too far away from Brussels is GENT this is also a medieval place and just some 45 minutes away from Brussels. IF the weather is REALLY nice take the train to KNOKKE; now this place is at the coast and is THE mondain place of Belgium. You should take a peek as it is for sure different than what you are used to. Nice to stroll along the beach/have a belgian waffel or try the mussels
In other words the week will pass by like that
Bon Voyage and as they say in 'flemish'saluukes!
I know I´m from Belgium, and Stella Artois is a good beer.
We have more than 750 different beers in Belgium, so don´t
let you distract by people who dont know (shit) about beer!

Is "sanitas per aquas" correct Latin for "health through waters"?
There is an argument that the word spa is actually an acronym based on the Latin phrase "sanitas per aquas". I want to find out if this is correct Latin. Personally I believe the origin is the Belgium town Spa.
Yes, it came from the city Spa, couse only English and Noth Europeans use the name Spa...in fact in Latin and in the new-latin languages it is called "termae" ("terme" in Italian), so I think that the acronym is a later adaptation.
Literally "sanitas per aquas" means "health through waters", but the form Spa is not used in the Latin culture so it's quite improbable that it comes from Latin words....
