Elgin YMCA working to get pool reopened after state shutdown Chicago Sun-Times
ELGIN — The swimming pool at the Taylor Family Branch YMCA in Elgin was closed down Monday as part of the state’s compliance with a 2007 federal law, but Rick Reigner, CEO of the Prairie Valley Family YMCA, said the repair work will be completed and the pool will be reopened.
All other programs at the YMCA, 50 N. McLean Blvd., remain open except those associated with the pool.
The closure came as the local Y worked to meet new state and federal regulations, Reigner said.
All public pools in Illinois must comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. That federal law was enacted after the 7-year-old granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker drowned when a faulty spa drain trapped the girl in 2002.
The law now mandates that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission enforce mandatory suction-entrapment regulations for all pools and spas. Beginning in 2008 and through June, the Illinois Department of Public Health began issuing notices to all licensed swimming facilities regarding those new suction-entrapment regulations, according to its website.

How to reseal and repair a fiberglass spa?
I received a fiberglass hottub spa that has some minor cracks in it and one larger crack in one of the seats. The motor, pumps and filters all work great and it still looks really good. Can someone recommend a good patch and sealer plus any other things that you can recommend that I do to make my first hottub awesome? Thanks!

If you desire to use a caulk then, believe it or not, ACE hardware's High Tech Sealant (0870AC) was tested (1-2 years) as one of the best sealants by a highly regarded boating magazine. It actually outperformed many specialty, expensive Marine specific caulks.
Hot tub/spa: the various nozzles and hydro-jets keep coming off during use, where can I learn how to repair?
these? This is a PDC spa that is only 2 1/2 years old. I manage to "reconnect" the pieces only to have them flying about with the next use. When they are reconnected, not all of them have adequate output now. I can't afford $70/visit for a different 2 or 3 apart and flying about for the repair person. (No warranty because I bought the house with the hot tub in place.) Help, it's a $7000 hot tub that just doesn't work well.
ScubaBob, I would have emailed you if you had provided a way to contact you through Yahoo answers. The company that installed the pool is in trouble with the state attorney general (not from me although I have no difficulty in understanding how and why this situation has happened.) The only other authorized repair place is very difficult to deal with since they did not install the pool and I don't think their repair person is that good. Any place to view these tools online?
Most spa jets require a special tool to get them properly seated, I'm afraid. You can take an example of your jet ( there are many types) into your local spa and pool shop and ask them for the right tool. It can cost from 10 bucks to 50 bucks, depending on the make of jet.
It's not uncommon for some of these jets, particularly the rotary kind, to eventually work themselves out, even if you did manage to T tape them. I tend to shy away from T taping, as you may inadvertantly cover up the air injection holes, making that jet only spit water and no air.
The reason the jets aren't all functioning as they ought to at the moment, is that with even just one jet missing, that particular return outlet is the easiest route for the water to go. It'll steal flow from the others.
Edit: In answer to your additional details. Many jets on commercially made tubs, come from a source such as Hayward or Jacuzzi, to name just two. Rarely are these jet fittings made by the actual tub manufacturer. The only one that comes to mind, being HotSprings for example. Unless you can ID the manufacturer of the fitting, it would be difficult to find an online resource to get a tool. Your best, cheap bet is still to take it into a spa shop and have them ID it and go from there.
Sorry about my Email not being posted, but I was cyber stalked by a nut case in the Canada travel section of this site and have no desire to have it happen again. Sorry, he ruined it for me as well.
Spa Repair question?
I have a Leisure Bay spa which is about 2 years old. We recently went to go in it and found that it was not working. We emptied it, checked the fuse box etc but it still won't work. Who do I call to check it out? I don't want to call the place where we bought it as they were really expensive to install it - do I call and electrician? Any advice please.
Check your circuit breaker in your main panel, then check the disconnect that is mounted outside near the spa (by Code, it must be at least 5' away), and then check to see if the GFCI breaker in the disconnect box has been tripped. Newer GFCIs will not reset if the trip and were not wired correctly, or if they have malfunctioned.
(There was a study completed about6 or 7 years ago that estimated around 80% of the GFCI receptacles installed since the late '70s no longer offer any protection. That is why Underwriter's Labs re-wrote the Standard for GFCIs to include the "no-reset" feature.)
If none of these actions work, call a qualified, licensed electrician. If he doesn't find a problem, call the manufacturer and ask if they have factory-trained technicians in your area.
Don't use it until you are CERTAIN that ALL of the electrical problems have been repaired.
Easy Caldera Spa Repair? Electrical?
Need Hot tub expert's advice and input!
We are looking into getting a free (basically we pick up) spa. Its a 2005 Caldera Spas Hot tub - Cumberland.
The original owner said that the problem with the hot tub is on one of the electrical boards that controls the heat. Our local Hot Springs dealer told them it would be around $1000 to fix. My husband is pretty handy and wouldn't mind taking on this repair. Do you think it would be an easy repair for someone? Do you know if Caldera Spas have the full foam insulation much like Hot Springs? Where is a good online retailer of parts and also have good support for DIY'ers? Any other tips for moving the spa home, the owner has kept water in it and the water moving so it doesn't freeze, they are just done with all the hassle and want it gone.
I'm not very impressed with our local dealership, so would not want to work with them anyway. :)
I looked for a manual on line for one of these tubs, but couldn't find one. I had a pool and spa business for 6 years, and could fix anything, provided I could get the parts.
You should try to contact Caldera, so you can get the part from them. But you need to know what is exactly wrong with it. So you're husband will need to trace back from the heater to determine the problem.
You might try these guys also.
cal spa repairs - why is my breaker tripping?
I have a 1997 cal spa that has power going to the spa just fine, but as soon as I put in the fuse into the circuit board, the breaker trips on the cut off. I got a new fuse, but that didn't work. Can anyone help me fix this bloody thing!
Has anyone tried to repair their spas?
I have an older Morgan spa, but it has not worked for a year. I am thinking of replacing the "spa pack" (moter, blower, heater). Has anyone had success in doing this themselves? If so, how difficult is it? Thanks!!!
Here is a few sites to help you. A little patience and you'll have no problems.

The lights on my Maxxus Sundance Spa stopped working. What can I do to try to fix it myself?
I have a Maxxus Sundance Spa that is just over one year old (the warranty is void b/c I bought it from the previous owner who owned the house I purchased). Recently, the lights inside the Spa quite working. I don't think the lights burned out b/c there is more than one light and none of them work. There are lights under the water and lights near the water fall, neither work now. They have been working fine since I've had the Spa (which is a year) but last week they wouldn't turn on when I pushed the main button.
The problem actually started two weeks ago. The spa has two points where you can turn the lights on. About two weeks ago the main button to turn on the light quit working, but the auxiliary button on the other side of the tub did work. Then, a few days later both both buttons worked again. Now, neither button works.
I've checked the owners manual and it doesn't say anything about troubleshooting the lights.
Is there anything I can do before I call a repair person?
circuit breaker or reset switch??
Any place that I can repair my hot tub in 60453?
I have an old vita spa from like 86-87, don't wanna get rid of it cause the room looks nice and dont wanna mess it up. The problem is that the water won't heat up and the jets are messed up (i think). Any estimates on how much it would cost to repair it would be very helpful as well.
