Teen spa supplies easily made at home Times and Transcript

What's summer without slumber parties and sleepovers?

And for pre-teen and teenage girls, what's a sleepover without makeovers?

From fingers to toes, nails can expect to get coloured with hues ranging anywhere from black to blue, from red to hot pink, and any shade in between. Not to mention the newest craze; stripes and polka dots!

But nails aren't the only spa activities that girls like to indulge in - hair, make-up and facemasks are usually on the list, too.

I recently stumbled upon an old book that my parents had bought me one year for Christmas, when I was a teenager.

The Sweet Dreams Make-up Workbook sure brings back a lot of memories!

It's a teenager's how-to guide for make-up and skin care, and I can't begin to count how many hours I spent reading that book, hidden away in my bedroom, safely experimenting with their tips, where there were no witnesses to my many make-up malfunctions.

Even back then, the section that intrigued me the most was with regard to beauty supplies that could easily be made with ingredients found around the house.

I'm opening a salon and spa supply store, I want to buy some better products in bulk. How/Where w/o license? ?

Where can I buy brand name beauty products in bulk without a cosmetology license?

You may have better luck getting the suppllies from Paul Mitchell and Pantene if you pay $10 at the Secretary of State's Office to buy a trade name. Once you have a registered trade name, i think the suppliers will ship to you in bulk..

Where can I buy quality and well priced SPA equipment & supplies in the TRI STATE area?

Where can I buy SPA supplies in the NY NJ CN PA area?

I want to open a spa, anyone know a great location for buying equipment and supplies in the NY NJ PA & CN area? Preferably NJ & NY

Sally Beauty Supplies has some items. It depends on what your looking for. You can probably find things cheaper on a wholesale website.

Looking for high volume faucet for spa tubs with 3/4" water supply; need 25-30 gpm flow. Any suggestions? Thx

This is new construction. Whole house plumbing is 3/4" with about 80gpm flow rate.
One tub needs a setup with a hand shower;
the other tub needs to be set up with a hand-held shower on a wall-mounted pole.

Thanks for your help!

I don't think you will ever get that kind of flow from a 3/4" supply line. If your pressure is good, you may be able to get it from 1" supply lines, but most water heaters are only 3/4" in and out, so you may need to go with commercial equipment. Most likely, if someone told you that you have an 80 gpm flow rate through 3/4" plumbing they were very mistaken. Try 8 gpm.

Where can I buy Gena Spa Microdermabrasion Crystal Creme?

Does anyone know where I can buy Gena Spa Microdermabrasion Crystal Creme? I use to get it at Sally's Beauty Supply but it's now discontinued. I do not want the whole system just the Crystal Creme. Thank you.

Any local beauty shop will be able to order this for you at no extra charge. You are right that they want to sell the whole system..

its at qvc.com, i love that line! good luck!!:)

Want to know how to open a spa/boutique/salon?

I am in the process of trying to write a business plan for my spa/salon/boutique, but I am having some trouble writing it. And also I need some help putting it all together as for as getting my supplies. I am going to have a full service salon with a boutique. Possibly a hair supply store so I need some help putting it together as well as where to purchase the items for my business (clothes, hair products, etc.) Is there grants available for minority/women business owners and how can I apply for them. Are there some place I can go that will help me with writing my business plan and get my credit on board. I live in GA.

You can read the article "How to Start a Hair and Salon Business" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol130/hairsalon.htm The article provides a solid introduction to the business, discussing points such as services you can offer, startup requirements, and success tips

For in-depth information, I suggest reading the following books (either borrow from your library or buy from your favorite bookstore)

- Start Your Own Hair Salon and Day Spa by Eileen Figure Sandlin
- 101 Media and Marketing Tips for Salon Owners... by Nanette Miner
- Creating an Excellent Salon: A Guide to Business Practice for NVQ Level 3 and Higher Qualifications
- Milady's Standard System of Salon Skills: Hairdressing
Beyond Beauty: Cosmetology Business Information and Resources
- Salonovations' Day Spa Operations
- Successful Salon Management

You can go to SCORE http://www.score.org for help in writing a business plan. They are typically retired businesspeople who are volunteering their time, so their service is free.

As for grants, it is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html...

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Go to the SBA website and try to locate an affiliate or office in your area. They can help you put your business plan together and give you advice in terms of structure (do you really want to have three businesses in one from the start), business plan, and financial advice.

As for your credit you might want to locate a consumer credit service.

Not to discourage you, but you have to fairly decent credit to get any loans. As for grants you will have to search very hard for those, especially considering the field you are getting into - high market saturation.

I would like to start my own massaging spa at home, how do I get started, and where do I buy supplies?

Are you certified? In most states I think you have to be, but try looking up massage items individually on the net, you will probably find a site that sells or can tell you where to buy all you need.

I am looking for a good winter business?

I own two businesses that thrive in spring and summer. A Day Spa and a day spa supply company on line. I am very experienced at building and selling from my own websites but I need to sell somting that does well in winter. It would be great to find somethig complimentary to what I am doing now.

How do you package and ship a gift basket?

I'd like to put together a gift basket filled with toiletries, spa supplies, and other things. How do I package the gift basket properly so that I don't have things falling out of the basket and moving around when it's shipped to its destination?

First of all, you don't want things in the basket shifting around while in shipment. To keep things in their place, use styrofoam or floral foam to act as spacers and you can even push the edges of some items into the foam so that it stays put better. To hide the foam, cover it with dried moss of whatever color you like, or even thin shreds of colored paper. Many products are available to use for that purpose. You can use staples to hold the moss or paper to the foam. Also, try to use baskets without handles since the handles can get in the way when you go to shrink wrap your basket. Ideally, you want the shrink wrap to go directly over the items in the basket rather than over a handle. It works better that way. Use as much of the shrink wrap as is necessary, heavy items may need more than light items. Finally, ship in a box that has plenty of room on all sides so that packing peanuts will completely surround the basket. After all, if you're going to work that hard on a nice gift basket, you want to make sure its well protected. Have fun making your baskets!
