On the parking beat Nelson Mail

Parking wardens get a bad rap, but it pays to look at the bigger picture: how would you get to park your car in town if those who were there first never budged?

My Mission is to find out what makes a meter maid tick. The first thing I learn is to never call them meter maids.

They are parking wardens or, better still, parking officers, Nelson City Council parking supervisor Karen Robinson corrects me.

Before heading out on the beat, I am armed with the tools of the trade, bulging from a large holster belt I struggle to attach. There is chalk in the front pocket, which also contains a camera, a notebook and a computer gadget, and a printer is in a pocket off to the side.

Once outside, I put on dark glasses and hope that the hat I have been issued with serves as a disguise. Council festival producer Sophie Kelly is the first person I pass. "Hi, Tracy," she says, quizzically.

Parking in the city is subject to enforcement from 8am to 6pm, and, minutes after leaving the council offices, Karen spies the first transgression of the day. The vehicle owner who parked carefully in Wakatu Square has, unfortunately, left his or her parking permit upside down on the dashboard, and is pinged $40 for failing to display a valid permit.

Spiral perms?????

I would like to get a spiral perm but am being told it wont look natural. Now I am kinda scared to do it. If I do go through with it how do you care for it? I don't like frizzy hair. I don't know what to do! I don't want to mess up my hair. Please help.

definately talk with your stylist. perms are not hard to care for. to avoid the tight, frizzy curls, talk to your stylist about using a larger size roller. have you considered a body wave? it won't give you super curly hair but with add a bit of "oomph" to your hair. keep in mind, curly hair is drier so you may need a thicker conditioner to help avoid frizzies. just avoid the totally 80's spiral perm and you should be fine! good luck!

just don't get a perm chicken.

I have very long hair (waist length). A few years ago I had a spiral perm; OMG! I felt like my head weighed 100 pounds and my neck hurt. My hair didn't turn out frizzy but I couldn't comb through it for several days - not until I could wash it and put a conditioner/tangle remover into it. After than it did look okay but I don't think I'd go through this agony again. If I were you, I'd get my long hair styled instead of getting a perm. Good luck!

I don't see why it won't look natural- talk to the experienced stylist for advice.

What do you think about spiral perms?

Hi!
I'm consdering getting a perm, i had a spiral perm a year ago, and I didnt like it, but I actually might like it now (hard to explain, lol), and am considering getting one again. What do you think about spiral perms, or just perms in general? Any advice?
Thanks!
My hair is about shoulder-length, dont know exactly how long.......

For you I would need to know details of what type of hair you have. If you have thick, long hair, I don't think that the perm would hold very good. Why didn't you like your last perm? I would advise that if you did not like the first one you probably won't like the second one either. I sometimes look at other women's hair styles and wish I had the same, but the truth is not all styles looks good and have the same affect on everyone. Not only that but perming your hair is hard on it and you have to get one about every 3 months for the upkeep. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

YES LOVE THEM especially if you have the long hair for them I think any perm is great it gives you the versatile- curl /straight

well, I do this all the time. I will do something to my hair -- hate it -- and then when it's been a few years and I've gotten over it -- I do it again. It's a vicious cycle and you should fight it!

On another note: I have curly hair -- I get curly hair by putting gel in it and drying it upside down with a diffuser -- then I follow up with tresemme curl care -- scrunching the curls for more volume. My hair is definitely curly -- but if I don't do this -- it's not so curly -- Try it. It may work for you!

i think it depends on the shape of face of each person

no

They can be beautiful if done right. They are best on hair longer then 8 inches. If your hair is shorter, you can get that look with a candlestick wrap. Make sure you hair is in good condition and that you go to someone who knows what they are doing so they can choice the best type for your hair. Perm can be fun, but if not done right, they can be terrible. Good Luck

It's a technique that allows long (6" or more) hair to be curled. The curl formation is the spiral perm is a twisty corkscrew; the longer the hair, the longer the corkscrew effect.

try looking for photos of you with your previous permed do.
stare at it for a day and make a decision afterwards. :)

Perms are great (I have natural curls), but it depends on the shape of your face. You've tried it before so maybe you can try the ordinary perm because you can have it spiral using a curling iron so that you can have more hair styles as often as you want. Just don't forget to take good care of your hair because the chemical used are harsh so maintain a hot oil or treatment to moisturize it once a week specially after a few couple of months after the perming. You have lot of style with your permed hair, you can put a clip, headband, pony tail, braid them but not all, make your own style and experiment a little.

They are okay.

As far as curls go, spiral perms could not be any worse as far as fashion goes, especially now. Maybe you shoul try bigger looser curls? They look great on shoulder length or longer hair, and SO much more natural.

Spiral perms are, well..........80's. Maybe try a bigger curl

I personally don't like the look of perms and think they are kind of old school. I would not recommend them to anyone.

i heard that spiral perms last longer than regular perms are they?

i dont know if that is true or not, but i can say that i got a spiral perm in april...my hair was super long, past my breasts, and pin straight...i mean it! the first 3 weeks it was super curly...then after the 3 weeks it relaxed a little, i liked it better actually, and now i still have curls in my hair, but obviously it is growing out. i would recommend a spiral. also, they can be very expensive, so i went to the local hairstyling school to get it done. they have a teacher watch the entire time, so you know they wont make a mistake, and the price is half as expensive as in a regular salon.

When are some good products for spiral hair perms? or special care procedures?

I'm getting my first spiral hair perm today and I just wanted to know if there are any specific products thats work really well. I purchased the Herbal Essence curl shampoo, conditioner, moose. is that ok? do you have any tips on how to keep the curls very curly and bouncy throughout the day? any little tips and such are very much appreciated!

Wet your hair
Apply moose on the palm of your hand
Spread it all on your hair
Scrunch
Set blow dryer to LOW & COOL
Blow dry for 1 minute

How much do spiral perms cost if I go to First Choice Haircutters?

$59.95

Are spiral perms making a comeback?

Are spiral perms outdated or are they making a come back. I want something different and easy to take care of and I remember back in the 90s I wore my hair that way.

No, woman wear curls in a much softer, less uniform style....a perm just can't achieve that.

yes

not that I've seen. I do like them, but if it isn't in style thats a bit of a drastic move!

go for it

Aww no!!....I hate perms....ppl who get it look like they have afros!!!

aww shit

no only wierd people have spiral clurs there disgusting

Probably not. I've old seen elderly ladies with perms

NO
DOn't do it...it is so harsh on your hair, it grows out like crap and it takes forever to get it done...use a curling iron or hot rollers if you want the big hair look again

no please don't do that to your hair. if you want something different and easy to take care of then get your hair cut into a bob. that's very in right now and short hair is always easy to manage.

also please take note that spiral perms (or perms of any kind) are never coming back. ever.

Anyone know of a good salon in the Phoenix area that specializes in spiral perms for long hair?

hopefully no where. spiral perms went out in the early '90s.

Do women still get spiral perms?

Are they in? I've been straightening my hair since the mid 90s - time for a change and I remember the big spiral perm hair of the late 80s - I still think its cute.

yes they are just now coming back for this year, and all you have to do is ask your hair dresser for the spiral or she may suggest a body wave. We are going back now in the 80's as if you notice all magazines are now showing short to midlegnth light curly hair. I loved that look and unfortunately I can not do it since I color my hair.

Spiral Perms? Has anyone used the laser or boomerang rods? Need help with rolling techniques?

I have always used the cork screw rods to perm hair but recently saw the laser rods. Has anyone used them? Do they work well? How do you keep them in the head?

No I used the plastic magnetic rollers with the smooth barrel and a bottle of setting lotion. My spiral curls came out perfect.

how long do spiral perms last?

i got a perm yesterday and i wanted a wave. they said my hair was too short & so they made spirals instead. im trying to fade it out with tons of conditioner and straigthening my hair. i think its actually working and i want to know how long my spirals would stay on for.

The History of My Hair

Alright, so the Darlene look wasn’t so hot. Throw in glasses and braces, and I was totally hideous. But all my friends had that same hair—so WHATEVER.

7th grade was my baptism into the religion of Spiral Perm. The chemicals, the rollers, the burning scalp, the $$$....followed by the spray bottles of water, picks, hairspray, and deep conditioning….then 5 inches of stick straight roots 6 months later. I worshiped at the Spiral Altar until 1997.

At 12, I didn’t take care of it. You think I was going to drag myself out of bed a 6 a.m. to wet it down and pick it out in the cold basement? (Pfft!) I rolled out of bed and walked to the bus stop with a matted, frizzy mess—while all the other girls had wet hair with ice crystals (and a hacking cough).

My Freshman year, I asked for BIGGER ROLLERS. Yeah, baby! Loose spiral curls rocked! I loved it. My mom? She hated it. She screamed and yelled that the perm “didn’t take” and “for all that money, I expect to see curls”. I also had straight bangs that I carefully rolled under with a curling iron each and every morning—pulling off the coveted “Tootsie Roll Forehead”.

Sophomore Year—Mom had her revenge. She put the fear of God into my stylist, witched her out for giving me a loose perm last year, and demanded “her money’s worth”. The result? A tight poodle perm with layers. It was absolutely disgusting—and to top it all off, spiral perms were out. I cried, but my mom was a heartless witch and told me to deal with it until it grew out.

My Junior Year, the nasty perm was still just as tight as ever, and everyone had straight hair. I begged my mom to let me chemically straighten my hair instead of going with the perm, but she wouldn’t pay for “nothing”. It was either the Spiral or 8 inches of roots—so I was stuck with yet another year of fugly hair. (And no social life.)

Finally, in 1997, Mom realized that...
