Styling: the Charter School Look CounterPunch
. Sure, it’s about hedge fund managers supporting New York City’s charter schools. But if we are to believe the breezy slant of the piece (Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, “Scholarly Investments”), these young turks pick out charters the way their fathers shopped for the latest fedora. Cause it’s fashionable. Cause it reflects their inner selves. Cause it makes them feel good. The author, Nancy Hass, admits that thirty-something multimillionaires embracing public education “may seem odd.” Their kids, after all, are far more likely to go to Greenwich Country Day. But the explanation is simple enough if you know what she calls “the sociology of Wall Street.” These guys from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have a certain level of “nerdiness,” and charter schools appeal to their “maverick instincts.”
According to this benign scenario, the same analysts who spend all day in cut-throat financial competition toss away their Blackberries come dusk and do the right thing by joining the boards of charter schools. Privately run and often non-union, charters are seen by their advocates as the free market alternative to traditional public schools. Or, as the article puts it, “an entrepreneurial answer to the nation’s education woes.”

What are good styling products to create curls in really heavy thick hair?
I use styling products but they make my hair look wirey. The product never lasts all day it sort of starts weighing down.
Do you know of any products or tips that will help my hair stay soft and curly without having to use too much? I'm in australia so i mightn't have the same exact products here. But if you could tell me the type that it is.
Should I get a curling wand?
I have alot of family in the hair biz
the best methods in my experience and their expertise have been the following Caruso Molecular hair setter I haven't seen it in stores anymore but plenty of online dealers I had one for years and it worked great especially for thick hard to curl/hard to hold curl type hair and stayed in almost 2 days without any other hair products I wish I would not of let my friend borrow it she broke it hair held up even in the most humid weather if you find one it's worth the price they were like hot rollers but the rollers were foam and you placed them on a steaming apparatus but they were not hot rollers filled with steam and curled in like 2 min I just loved the product
also beauty supply stores have these foamy flexible perm rods I buy the orange and purple (the largest) they are about 8 inches and I spiral wrap damp hair around them and fold the ends of the rods together and sleep in them they are not uncomfortable at all in the morning I just unwind them throw my head forward and shake and finger style soft curl lasts for about 2 days too
Work's like a charm. ♥
What to do about the burn smell that heat styling appliances leave in your hair?
Hello all. For anyone who's ever used heat styling appliances such as curling irons, wave irons or flat irons, you know that there is often times a smell these appliances leave in your hair. Like a burn smell. Anyway, I was wondering what I could use to eliminate this smell from my hair once I'm done styling it. I'd prefer something natural, but all suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
All of you are saying, "heat protective spray"...any suggestions?
My wife use some kind of lotion stuff before the heat. I smell good and no burn on hair.
How much styling product should I be using?
I just got a new hair cut, and I am not sure how to style it, or how much pomade to use. It comes down to my shoulders, is thick, and has awesome layers. It's really cute, but I am definitly using too much styling product, because my hair is greasy after using it lately. Please help!
When using a pomade you really don't want to use much. Go with a dime size or less and add more if you need it.
How much does a professional hair styling kit on an average cost?
I was wondering how much a professional hair styling kit costs on average and what particular brand is the most recomended. Also, if you could give me a website to certain companies who produce those, that would be great.
I order professional hairstyling kits for my students. the ones that i order are $600 and can only be purchased by lisenced professionals. if you are a lisenced professional, then try www.theindustrysource.com
What are the best tips for styling curly hair in humid weather?
No matter what I use on my hair it still looks messy and frizzy, even when I straighten it. Are there any tecniqes for styling my curly hair or are there any products I can use?
I'm afraid that if I use to much product that my hair will look unatrual and it would be hard as a rock. I use this product from CHI but the results are very unpredictable.
Hi. Straightening hair in hot weather is like keeping clothes from being wrinkled. That just wont work. So thats not a viable option. I used to do that, but I let my hair stay curly. The products on the market dont do much for moisture. Frizzy hair is a sign of dryness, which is lacking moisture. They have lots of harsh chemicals that just dont do anything for hair. You should go for more natural products that have less chems/no chems/100% natural. Here are some websites for curly hair you can take a look at:
www.curls.biz - I currently use this.
www.honeyfig.com
www.janecartersolution.com
www.curlicious.com
www.johnmasters.com
www.aubreyorganics.com
www.longlovelylocks.com
www.jessicurl.com
www.blendedbeauty.com
www.kinky-curly.com
Take a look at them. Also look at their faqs and tips. You will get great info too. Only shampoo your hair 1x/week on your scalp, not all over hair or it will dry it out! If hair is dirty, use conditioner instead to wash it out. This will moisturize hair and clean it at the same time. To tame down frizzies while washing, put hair into some big loose braids, apply shampoo to scalp, gently rub, wash out, then loosen each braid. Apply conditioner to braid, smooth out tangles and fingercomb, then braid back. Do to all other braids and then wash out. DONT MANIPULATE YOUR HAIR ALL OVER, YOU WILL TANGLE IT AND CAUSE FRIZZIES! Just run the water through your hair and squeeze braids until shampoo/conditioner washes out. Tip: If you want, you could leave a little conditioner in your hair to keep that soft feeling. This video is on www.growafrohairlong.com. Its called the shampoo method, there is a video, its good for anyone. This tames my hair before I style it.
DONT USE A TOWEL TO DRY YOUR HAIR OR FRIZZIES WILL COME! Squeeze out some water, but not all of it. Apply a moisturizing custard cream to your hair ( I use the whipped cream from curls.biz) and spritz some leave-in conditioner to your hair. Depending on your hairstyle, you can leave it out, braid it back and then loosen it later, or whatever you want. Dont blowdry your hair. Air dry. Its safer and will set your hair better. You should also get something for when your hair is dry that will moisturize your hair and give it shine, since you could only use the custard cream when hair is dripping wet. You dont want to wet your hair all the time, do you?
I hope this helps you. Maybe a good deep conditioning treatment 2x/month will do your hair good. Oh and since your hair is curly, you shouldnt comb or brush it often. That will also cause static to frizz your hair up. Use a wide tooth comb if you do. I fingercomb only, no combs. God bless.
You could also use olive oil which is what my sister uses, and it's really good for your hair. The only thing is you really have to know how much to use because if you use to much it's gonna be really greasy and smelly.
Is hair styling a good talent for a Beauty Pageant?
I'm planning to participate in a beauty pageant this summer. I don't have much talent, i sing whenever I cant, and I love to go shopping, but that's not really a talent. The only thing left that I would love to do hair styling, but is this a good enough talent?
Well congragulations for being in a pageant but if they are having a talent competition then you might want to try something different because I don't know if they will give u a long enough time to do someones hair up on the stage but possibly it might work but when you sign up and get your number than you might want to make sure that it would be okay to have that as your talent IF they have a talent comepetition .If they are just going to SAY your talents then that would be fine to have that.
What are the best products to use for treating and styling a body wave?
What are great shampoo and conditioner?
Styling products to get the curls from getting frizzy and crazy looking?
And Professional brand only please. No drug store of grocery store stuff. Thank you.
The best shampoo and conditioner and definitely Kerastase Bain Oleo-Curl Definition Shampoo and Conditioner for Dry, Curly Hair. I've used this product for ages because it prevents frizz and tightens and defines the curl. Many hair stylists cite Kerastase as THE leading hair care brand so you know that it's worth the money. The shampoo and conditioner will set you back $32 each.
If you have thick curly hair I'd follow that will the Curl Definition Cream for Thick Curly Hair ($34) or if you have thin curly hair, the Curl Definition Oil Mist for Fine Curly Hair ($34) when you're about to style it (while your hair is still wet).
These products are available online at www.kerastase.com or at leading hairdressers.
But... If you happen to not like that product try the Redken Fresh Curls range. They also work great and they're less expensive.
What is a good product for styling mens hair?
I normally used got2b glued...I've been told its not a healthy choice if i want to keep my hair 15 years from now. So i was wondering what type of styling product i could use thats both good for styling and healthy ?
I use spikers I cant remember the maker but it's in a blue tube similar to got2b. There is no really unhealthy product except maybe ironing your hair. I would also look to American Crew they are gender specific for men in their products and they have a great pomade and a fantastic glue for your hair and they tend to be what I go with the majority of the time.......Other than that washing your hair regularlly and taking it out of your hair and at time not putting it in your hair help too balance out the stress you put on it from time to time.
Is their a styling product that can make thick wavy hair curly without sacrificing the thickness?
I have thick somewhat wavy hair that is short but Im planning to grow it a little longer and I was wondering if their is a way I can make my hair curly wihout sacrifcing thickness and without a perm or anything that changes my hair, Im looking for something thats temporary so I can do it now and then for fun, my hair doesnt work good with garnier styling products just so you know.. Really look foward to insight, thanx :-)

Does anyone know of any completely organic shampoo's and styling products that are available?
I am interested in getting some shampoo which is completely organic, and totally chemical free! It cannot contain parabens or phlates, and has to contain natural ingredients like plant extracts etc. I've seen some I like by The Organic Pharmacy but it is £20, and that is a bit expensive for me, can anyone suggest another organic brand that is good but retails at a reasonable price? It would also be helpful if they had styling products in the same range, like serum and straightening balm if possible. Many thanks!
Aveda products are available from salons or on their website. Their products are very good.
