What is the best O-ring material to use in a swimming pool/spa water environment?

A few years ago someone told me the best material to use for an O-ring seal in swimming pool and spa water was peroxide cured EPDM (ethylene propylene dimonomer). Is this still the case or is there a newer material which lasts longer in the chlorine water environment?

no epdm is the best

Chlorine can eat away (waste and shrink) rubber compounds and the best would likely depend on industry experience. You should consult a pool expert (like NONAME?) to determine what is preferred use today.

Lubricants like Magic Lube (Teflon based) or Jack's Lube are always great.Just stay away from any petroleum based products as they will breakdown the rubber and cause it to crack.

where can i get a Two Circuit Swimming Pool/Spa Time Switch in the UK.?

I need one that turns off the boiler before pump?
in the book that came with the boiler it says you can conect a timer with a firemans switch to switch of bioler before water pump.

Does the boiler not have a pump overrun thermostat fitted? then you just need a single circuit timer. Otherwise there are loads of two circuit programmers, ACL/Honeywell/Dafoss Randall etc etc.

Contact Sangamo, they make a timeswitch with an 'Early Off' contact which might be suitable.

i don't get the question. try argos or woolworths im sure they will have something

Sorry I'm in the USA, Good Luck finding it!

What is the "green" way to heat my swimming pool and spa with out using gas or electric?

outdoor ingroung pool 10M x 4.5M its 1.4M average depth
The spa or hot tub is a 4 seater approx 1500lt with cover

I have been looking for a "Green" solution to pool heating give these guys go, the web site is www.genersys.com.au
They can heat pools and spas and the panels has a 20year warranty.

A solar cover.

I'm pretty sure that they make solar covers or solar powered heaters or wind or water powered

Solor cover.

Powla has it! Used these guys to heat my pool and it all runs off the sun....no gas or electric needed. Bliss in a balmy pool sipping a cool drink.....the kids love it too. Give them a go.

Is going in the spa (swimming pool spa) bad for your skin?

do harsh chemicals flare up acne or dry your skin out. i havent been in since my acne has mostly cleared up and my skin is smoother, im just wondering if it will do more harm that good

it depends on where you go. I went to a community center hot tub, and there were kids swimming in it, it made me uncomfortable. That night after wading in the tub for like 30mins, my skin got so dry it itched, and the next morning I woke up with these huge discusting bumps all over were my suit covered my body, and my legs, face and arms. they pussed, and itched, it was the most uncomfortable thing ever! It turns out I had hotub foliculitis. when the skin gets warm the folicles open, and from all the kids swimming and peeing in that little tub all the bacteria was resting in the folicles, and when I got out, the cold contracted them shut, so i had all this bacteria resting in my skin.

hottubs arent bad, just make sure u know were your going!

You are definitely doing some damage to your skin. Your skin will react to the chemicals. If you only go in once and stay in for a couple of hours it might not be so bad, but if you go in repeatedly your skin won't be able to tolerate the effects and will react more harshly.

Does anyone know which swimming pool pump has the best value for the money for both pool and spa?

I had a pool built just 2 years ago. My spa is not generating any bubbles or jets as it was the first year. It has a Hayward pump to filter both pool and spa. This was highly recommended by the builder. But now, my pool cleaner guy cleans the filter every week so the spa can get some pressure. He says that he wouldn't have bought a Hayward pump. Also, said he would have another pump for the spa. I don't know anything about pools and want to learn, so I don't have to second guess everyone in the pool business. I don't have money to burn like some friends of mine that just keeps paying a pool guy to fix everything for them.
I would like to do it myself and save my money.
any comments or suggestions are welcomed.
thank you in advance.

If you have a single pump for pool and spa, and the pump is keeping your pool and spa clean, its not the pump. Hayward is an INDUSTRY STANDARD pump. 8-9 out of 10 pools have Hayward pumps on them most likely.

It sounds like a configuration problem with your plumbing, maybe its not set up properly, or your filter grids <which decrease your pressure> may need to be changed, they can become chemically blocked and inefficient. Check with your pool store to get some cleaning materials for it. That may help you rather than buy new filter grids.

Generally speaking a pool pump should circulate the entire water contents of a pool within 10 hours. A standard pool pump starts at about $55 online; while a heated pool pump with digital display can cost upwards of $3000.

If the filter needs to be cleaned, it sounds like the pump is doing it's job. Once a week cleaning sounds pretty darn good to me.

What to replace swimming pool /spa dam tile with?

I live in NJ and I have a gunnite Carlton pool installed in 2002. In 2004 the tile on the dam top surface between pool/spa peeled off and Carlton repaired in kind. Now tile on dam has completely fallen off. Carlton wants $1900 to replace tile in kind, but I'm not keen on tile because of past problem. Questions:
+ Can I replace the tile on the top surface of dam with slate? Any other suitable material?
+ is this a common problem on tiled dams - why does it occur?
Thanks

Ah, do you have a salt pool?

The tile should be easy to replace but may still be costly. Contact your state contractors license board and ask how long the pool is warranted for. I think they may tell you something other than Carlton is telling you.

Most often tiles fall off because of poor adhesion to the gunite and this is a warranty issue with your pool builder.

If you replace with slate considerations have to be given to supporting the increased weight. If you do not give consideration to this your entire dam wall may fail.

You're welcome!!

Do you have a swimming pool or a spa?

We have a pool and we want a spa is the up keep about the same as a pool? Thanks Sheila

The upkeep is about t he same. Fortunately since a Spa is normally kept closed to retain the heated water and reduce your water use and electrical use for the heat pump system, you really shouldnt have too much debris in your water. A Spa is normally only a few hundred gallons of water <size and amount of water varies from spa to spa.. but its probably no more than 600 gallons of water>

As for chemical upkeep, you can use the same pool chemicals, only in moderation. IF you need to shock your spa water, you might only need 1 or 2 tablespoons of granular chlorine shock.. IF you do not feel comfortable with using your pool chemicals <as some people do not feel comfortable because they are designed for larger bodies of water> you can purchase chemicals designed for the spa, But like everything else in the world, you are going to pay a premium for this. Its the same chemicals, they have just dummy proofed the directions on the container so that it measures for a spa of 500 or 1000 gallons. Or in some cases, will tell you XX amount per 100 gallons etc.

So Yes, it is still the same upkeep, just for a smaller body of water. Also keep in mind too that a warmer body of water may need to be changed more often. When i worked for a service company, and a customer had a spa that was connected to an in ground pool, we routinely changed the water, You can drain the spa, and add it to the pool water, the effect that 600 gallons of water has on a pool with nearly 25000 or 30000 is not even noticable. Then just set up the pool system to return your water back to the spa so as to fill it up.

Hope this helps

Chris

I don't have either but I want to get a spa

If you saw the weather here where I live , you would understand why I don`t need either, it is throwing it down and the wind is howling and it does`nt get much better in the summer.

No, dern it all we don't! LOL!

We used to have a spa borrowed from my girlfriends son in law whilst he was waiting to move into his new house. It measured about 8'x8' and was ideal just to sit in and unwind. Alas we had to give it back but on the occasions that we visit we are allowed to have a soak. Well recommended though!

No I dont have eiether. But I swim in a pool 3 days a week at The Dutchess County YMCA. If that helps.............

i have both. It is nice to have both because of it is nice outside, you go for a swim. Night comes along and you just want to relaxe. Thats where a spa comes in handy. It's also nice to come home and just melt away in a spa. Good for parents who can watch their kids swim in a pool and relax. I grew up with both i find that everybody should either all or none.

SPA SPECIALIST...whats the different between spa and swimming pool?

Both you immerse yourself in water. does soaking in swimming pool give the same affect as in spa? what is in the water for the spa that make us feel lighter and get rid of toxin?

I think by spa you meant the jacuzzi. It's got warmer water, jets to massage your back and feet, and you just sit in there, you don't swim.
Whether it gets rid of toxins or not depends on how much you believe in alternative therapy and medication. It is, however, soothing and relaxing, so you do come out feeling lighter and more refreshed.
If you are a guy, staying in the jacuzzi for too long will lower your sperm count because of the heat. Also, no one should sit in there for more than half an hour at a time without coming out because it can dehydrate you and you can get dizzy and faint.

Has anyone used an automatic pool cleaner on an endless pool swim spa?

Just wondering if anyone has tried connecting one of the aquabot type pool cleaners up on an "endless pool"?

This "endless pool" what we call a jet pool? You swim against the current, it's about 8 feet long? If so, nope, why would you? It's like getting out an industrial shop vac to pick up a grain of sand. There's not enough of the pool for one to vac. Likely as well, it wouldn't do a great job. Too tight a space for their turning radius.
This was a joke, right?

Iam considering buying an endless pool vs. a swim spa. Can anyone help me decide between the two?

I'd like to swim every day and I have an outdoor site in my backyard. However, my kids realy want a spa and I am wondering whether there is some good way of combining the two functionalities in one pool.

you can't swim in a spa because the temperature will cause you to have a heat stroke. get one or the other. best would be to go to a gym. get the spa
