Swimming Pool?

I am wanting to purchase a swimming pool for my grandchildren.
Easy set-up 3-4ft. deep, here's the problem. Our house is located on a hill, the only flat place is on our deck. The deck is not really the idea place, worried with the weight. Is there an easy solution,or would the deck be ok? Any other suggestions would help, thanks

depending on the size of the pool on wether or not you deck can handle it - typically a pool 3-4 feet deep will be 10-12 in diameter minimum - I'd vote no on using the deck - initially it might handle the weight but over time things will start to settle and break. I once intalled a hot tub on my deck and it was ok at first but in two years I had major problems. I would have someone that builds look at your deck but I would advise against it. Now how out of level is your yard? - with a little planning such as a decretive retaining wall and some dirt infill you could build an area up level to handle the pool just fine. With some guidence or know how you could do most of it yourselves - contact me for details

get a jucuzzie instead

If the deck is built right, it can hold the weight. I did the same thing with my deck. However, I built my own deck, so I knew it could hold the weight. Generally, if there are 2x6 joists and 4x4 beams at least every 16" to 24" apart, you shouldn't have any problem.

1 Gallon of water = 8.35 pounds

multiply that by the number of gallons of the pool + the weight of the people who will be using it at one time. This will give you a rough estimate.

Why not build an add on to the deck, just a platform, for the pool. That way, you won't lose the functionality of the deck itself.

if there is no place to put it at then there is no point in purchasing a pool. why not just bring them to a REC center

get a juccuzi its the best!!

If you do not use the deck, which by the way is really not the ideal place, then you will have to get sand and level off a place to put the pool. A bit more work but a much better idea.

If the Pool has a large diameter I wouldn't trust the weight on a deck.

You should have an area of your lawn graded. NO pool on your deck !!! DANGER DANGER DANGER!!!

set it up on the slope if its not to steep, that way you ll have a shallow an deep end

have you thought of a wadding pool

Is there any way that you could level a piece of ground in your garden, or mabey dig a piece of the hill away?

instead of a pool why dont u try putting a jacuzzi on the deck? it would be lovely and add some class to the home.

If the deck will support you and several others, it should support the pool. Get a cheap plastic one and don't put a lot of water in it (just a couple of inches). The kids will just be happy splashing around anyway. It doesn't matter how much water is in it. Get blow up balls, water guns, or other water toys for the pool and they'll be happy. When the summer is over, you can then use the plastic pool as a sandbox (if you find some sort of lid) or I've even seen some people use them as planters.

Other solution, what about the driveway or the front of the house?

Deb baby,

pls is not need to purchase a swimming pool for your grand kids and how old are they.

pls first check their years and if any thing else get to know how best they come swimm ok.

suggestion

can u take them over for a swim and verify that they can really swim or not before u can go forward and do that for them ok

thanks Deb

the deck should be fine as the wieght can be reinforced underneath making it very stable

What does the front yard look like? Maybe you could put the pool there instead and build a small fence around it?

I recommend a flat surface (best to be a deck).
If your pool is so heavy that it would crack a wooden deck, use something stronger (such as cement). But if your pool is the average weight (or below), I would recommend a leveled wooden deck to put your pool on.

Don't put the thing on the deck. Level a spot in the yard if you must. But if you are going to all that trouble I sure wouldn't waste my money on one of those awful e z set pools. The thing will play out in very short order then you are stuck with a funny looking flat spot in the yard! Think about it.

How to ensure swimming pool has enough water for the pool filter to function optimally when on long holiday?

I am going on a 2-month overseas holiday and am concerned that my swimming pool water might fall below the optimal level (through evaporation) for the pool filter/pump to effectively clean the water.

Apart from spending money to get a pool cover to reduce the rate of water loss through evaporation, I am interested to find out any other practical ways to automatically top up the pool (without human intervention) when I am away.

Tough one......can't you have someone top it off once a week when they are checking the house?

Good Luck!

If you are handy you can set up a level switch to open a filler valve when the water drops below a specified level.

idea no.1
buy a programmable timer for your hose and program it to top up your pool say three times a week, you would need to do some sums to work out how long.

The best recomendation i can give you is to get a automatic pool filler. You can get them anywhere, they are very simple to hook up to the water hose. They just use a float in them when it gets to low it cuts the water on. Although not very expensive it will set you back about a hundred dollars.

How does a swimming pool salt ionizer work?

A friend of mine has a "saltwater" swimming pool, it does not require the addition of any chlorine. Does anyone know how the chemistry of the ionizer works, ie how does it convert simple NaCl to hypochlorite? Is the chlorine level in this type of pool lower than a chlorinated pool? Is the level of Chlorine gas lower?

To start off with, chlorine is a salt. All that a salt water generator does is convert salt, by a form of electrolysis via a cell in the plumbing, into a low constant dose of chlorine gas that dissolves in the pool water to become sodium hypochlorite. The cell looks like the plates in a lead acid car battery. Water flows between the plates and an electric current passes between the plates. Gas forms on the plates and dissolves into the pool water return. Generally, yes, the chlorine is a little lower than in a traditionally chlorinated pool because it is constant dose. It doesn't have the spikes in levels. Often there's no need to even put the units into their 100% output or "shock" setting.
By chlorine gas, I'm assuming you mean chloramines given off after chlorine has oxidized an organic. Well, there's no getting around that unless you go with a non chlorine sanitizer. That chlorine smell is actually chlorine after it's done it's job. The dirtier the pool organic wise, the greater the smell if chlorine is present.
Think about that next time you visit a public pool. :)

Salt water pools utilize a chlorine generator to make chlorine for sanitation. In order to adequately sanitize the water 1-3ppm of free chlorine needs to be present. This is the same amount required by a 100% chlorine pool. Many people think their salt water pools are devoid of chlorine, this is untrue. Some makers also companion salt systems with ozone (Delozone) and ionizer systems (Zodiac). The ozone companioned systems say to reduce the chlorine production to 1/2 normal, 1-3ppm. Some ionizer makers follow this recommendation.

100% ion systems are really flying in the face of conventional thinking since they say no chlorine is needed at all. Ion systems operate with copper, zinc and or silver electrodes that erode over time and place copper, silver and zinc into the water. Copper is an effective algaecide, silver functions similar to chlorine and zinc is there for some other purpose.

You're welcome!!

Can anyone make water spiral threw an automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes?

My question is can you make the water in your automatic swimming pool cleaner's pipes spiral. Speeding up water flow, greater suction power, faster automatic swimming pool cleaner, a turning force is created on the swimming pool pipes.
The automatic swimming pool cleaner will be able to turn itself out of tight spots.

Try a Hayward Navigator, it turns itself out of steps and ledges and spends more time cleaning the pool!

You're welcome!!

Yeah

some automatic cleaners have programs that automatically back up....also some robotic cleaners back up too: http://www.swimming-pool-information.com/robotic-swimming-pool-cleaners.html http://www.swimming-pool-information.com/automatic-swimming-pool-cleaners.html

How do I prevent plants from growing on a swimming pool?

The swimming pool is above the ground. The plants were mostly vines. The pool has also had plants lean towards the pool.

This makes it more difficult to swim and damages the metal of the pool.

I have nothing against plants.

Maybe trim the plants back a bit ... or maybe add canes and tie the plants up, so they grow up, rather than spreading out.

Or just get rid of the vines and change for a differnet plant which dosent spread out ...

you need to trim around the pool area weekly and make sure the chlorine levels are correct. Also getting a cover for the pool helps

I would suggest a non toxic weed killwe that home deopt or any other hardware store sells. =D

Post, " NO PLANTS " signs in conspicuous places all around the pool area...It"s kind of of a "no-brainer", don't ya think ???

Just dig them out. and keep everything around the pool neat and tidy, don't let them grow, get them out immediately. I hope this sounds reasonable.

Where should a swimming pool light be positioned?

I am having an in-ground swimming pool built. I wonder if the positioning of the light in the jaccuzzi part makes a difference. Does it look any different if facing away from the house (which is the view most will have of it) or toward the house? Will the water just refract the light in every direction anyway? I appreciate feedback from pool builders as well as pool owners.
The main pool light is facing away, but because of it's shape, it is not facing directly away. Should the two match?

Have any lights facing away from the house, the water will not disperse the light that much at all.

The lights do not have to match up with the pool to look even they will look good any way.

All lights would be best to face away from the house and a dimmer switch would be reccommended. 100 watt light for spa

How much maintenance does a swimming pool take?

I want to get a swimming pool. My husband says "absolutely NO" cause they are too much maintenance. How much maintenance does an above ground pool need? What about the big blow up ones?

My mom has one that I let my kids swim in all the time and about every week you should clean it out with one of those net things and always make sure that you put the clorine thing in or else the pool turns green but otherwise it dosn't seem that hard does it?

The maintenence would depend on the type of pool. An inground pool would take more maintenence because there are more things included with it. But with every pool you have to maintane the filter and liner and the cleanleness. The pool is expensive regulary and if there is something wrong with the filter and the liner it is costly to replace it. Then the most important is the cleaning. Cleaning requires a net and a little robot. The net you can get anywhere at a low price but the robot is what you need to worry about. The robot is around $100. It drives itself around the bottom of the pool and sucks up any crud at the bottom such as mold and slime. It works as a vacum. In my experience it is deffinetly wroth getting a pool if you live in a hot place like florida and can use it year round, but if not you might want to reconsider and purchase a lesser, blow-up pool.

Is there a swimming pool in Southern California that will allow my dog to swim?

I have three dogs that love to swim and I would like to find a swimming pool that we enjoy together.

Unless its your own its very unlikely you will find a public swimming pool that allowed dogs. Your best bet is a lake or the ocean.

I have a above ground swimming pool and the water has turned white. A fine film covers the bottom.filter 24/7?

Abopve ground swimming pool. Water is turned white. Filter running 24/7.m Cleaning filter all the time. Fine film of silt??? on floor of pool but i keep sweeping pool and raising it off floor but hardly any difference.
It is chlorine pool(granular)
Wondering how to clean. Pool vacumm not doing anything.

It sounds like your pool Pump is not working. How old is your pool? I have owned an above ground pool and an inground pool and one thing i have learned about them both is, if you are maintaining Chemicals correctly and its still not cleaning, your pump is gone..I have also found out that an Automatic Chlorinator is the best thing you can buy for your swimming pool. Once a week all you do is add the Chemicals, usually the tablets, and it will do the rest for you. I had to hardly do any cleaning after I had it installed.

How do I kill the algae in my swimming pool?

My pool is a 40000 gallon (20X40 feet) below ground swimming pool. It has poor circulation and it is very green. I just bought the house and I have been trying to kill the algae for about a month. The pump sucks from the skimmer, but not from the bottom drain. There are two water jets that feed water into the pool at opposite corners of the pool. Help!

What is your water chemistry? Take a sample of water (about a pint) down to the local pool store and have them run a full spectrum analysis on it. Make sure they test for
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Bring these results back and post them here or email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and we'll get you straightened back out. Don't purchase anything from the pool store when you have the water tested. Sometimes their recommendations aren't spot on for your exact pool.

Please include the material the pool is made of (vinyl or concrete/plaster), filtration system, chlorination system, chemicals used in the pool in the last two weeks, and any chemicals you have on hand at home now.
