California Bans Tanning Beds for Minors ABC News (blog)

A new California law that prohibits anyone younger than 18 from using tanning beds drew praise from from health organizations when it was signed this weekend.

The law, signed on Sunday by Gov. Jerry Brown, takes effect Jan. 1.  Currently, California law permits teenagers who are between 14 and 17 to use the beds provided they have parental consent.

The bill’s author, State Sen. Ted Lieu, told the Associated Press that 30 other states have laws in place restricting tanning for minors.

The American Academy of Dermatology expressed support for the law in a statement, noting that previous research has shown that people who have used indoor tanning are at 75 percent higher risk for melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Indoor tanning also raises the risk of other types of skin cancer.

“The American Academy of Dermatology applauds the state of California for being the first in the nation to prohibit the use of indoor tanning devices for all children and adolescents under the age of 18 — the most restrictive law in the country,” Dr. Ronald L. Moy, president of the American Academy of Dermatology Association, said in the statement. “We commend Gov. Brown, Sen. Ted Lieu and the other members of the California legislature for their efforts to help reduce the future incidence of skin cancer by protecting youth from the dangers of indoor tanning.”

Tanning????

im planning to go to a tanning salon but don't know how all that stuff works. Do i just go in there and tan or do i need to put any lotion on or anything??? if so what kind of lotion should i put on and please share and info that i need to know about tanning. thank you.

The first time you go tanning go only for like 5 minutes. Return a couple of days later, or maybe even a week and go for 8 or 10 minutes. DEFINITELY use a tanning lotion. At the beginning I didn't use anything and I would start peeling everywhere like crazy! but now that I use a tanning lotion I don't peel at all :-)
Now , on with the "tanning is bad for you". It is. This is the 3rd topic I've posted this on, but I just feel like sharing my experience. I'm 24, I have been tanning (always outdoors) since I was born. I just started going to the tanning salon like 2 months ago and last week I went to the derm and he told me I have sun damage in my skin! what is sun damage? its what old ladies get! and i'm 24! Fortunately, because I'm young, the damage is reversible. Just be careful when tanning ok? Use spf of 30 or more if you can. It 'll take you more time to get tanned but it'll protect you more.

If you've never tanned I would try the misting type of tanning. It's instant and doesn't harm your skin the way the UV lights will.
With the instant tan you need to exfoliate with a salt or sugar scrub that does not contain any mineral oil prior to tanning. After tanning make sure to use a good lotion that does not contain mineral oil to make your tan last longer.

dont do it.

its skin cancer in a box.

tanning beds use UVA rays to tan you.
UVA rays can cause skin cancer!

Get some basic tanning lotion....
Dont tan but maybe 5 -8 minutes your first time...
After a few weeks of going, get Tingler lotion,
(it makes you alot darker, but it turns you really red rite after you use it, it tingles, alot, but your body will get use to it and it wont tingle anymore)
The first time i used it i told my sister it felt like i walked through a fire!! but after the third time i used it, i couldnt feel it!

it depends what kind of tanning you mean, if it's spray on tan than all you need is a bathing suit and a hair cap...if you mean the kind of artificial tan with the lamp, use tan lotion, use after sun with allow Vera after... Careful, artificial tanning is EXTREMELY bad for your skin, it makes you get wrinkles early!!!! if tanning natturally doesn't work well for you, it takes to long, or you don't attract the sun very well: here is a helpful trick that is not bad for your skin: spraid oil and lemon on your body (not anywhere near eyes), and tan for like fifteen minutes and you will have an attractive copper tone tan!!!!
good luck!!!! :D

tanning??>?

ok first off please dont tell me all about the wrinkles im gonna get and how its bad for your skin, thanks for your concern but i know what im doing

ok so if your not gonna try and criticize me here is my question, well i went today and started back up and just went on a reguluar bed, i went for 20 min, and i used banana boat tanning oil *yes i know its for outdoor but its all i had* and anyways i jsut layed on my back, and i know its only the first time but aside from bein a bit red i dont notice much

how fast will i see major results

what else can i do to speed up the process

i have 20 sessions, 20 min each right now, how often shoudl i go? and how tan will i be at the end of that time?

thanks

it ALL depends on your skin type. if, for expamle, you have pale skin, you skin wont hold the tan as long or as deep as it would if you have olive toned skin. i would go every other day if your skin is red right now. dont go when your skin is burned, it will only cause you to peel then you'll just lose your tan altogether. and one thing i noticed when i went to the tanning bed. it's best to turn over half way through. the skin on your back will end up darker than your front . because your back is closest to the light. you probably wont notice a difference until the 3rd or 4th time

melanoma explosion!

get some bronzer instead.

I suggest you go to the tanning salon only 2-3 times a week, but it's good that you're starting early because summer is on its way! Plus, for the purpose of looking more "natural", immediate results are probably what you don't want! You should see a little more color tomorrow, and when you go in a few days you will notice even more. But, trust me, you do NOT want to look like an orange; so immediate results are a no-no!

y do u have to tann???? IM SRRY BUT U RLLY SHOUDNT DO THAT!!! ITS RLLY RLLY BAD FOR U!

Depending on your skin, the tan *might* not show up until a week or two.

And it's not good for the tan to show up fast anyways.

Is this your first time tanning? You should NOT go for 20 minutes your first time! That is just begging to be burnt.

Don't use outdoor lotions outside. It ruins the acrilics, and actually can block out the uv rays from the bed.

I would say after 3 times you can tell a difference, but it wont be a strong difference. Go as often as you can without burning. If you can get away with once everyday, then do it. But don't overdo it or you'll burn and regret it.

go two or three times a week, and use a tanning lotion that has bronzers and that has an accelerator, you should see results in about a week or two depending on how well you tan.

well you shouldnt go tanning for 20 min your first time and if you arent burned now, you will be! give it a few more hours you are gonna be on FIRE! get some aloe now
you should also not use banana boat, i know you know this, but it wont help at all. its actually bad to wear that in the bed. you should get some real indoor tanning lotion, they have some at the salon but if you cant affors the 20 dollars a bottle wal mart has one for 7 bucks but make sure it says 'indoor salon use'

okay well i tan a good amount, so heres my advice...
definately use a tanning lotion that they sell in the salons. i use 14k gold by designer skin and its awesome. it smells like banana laffy taffy. haha some people like the smell some dont...it runs about $48 theyre expensive but they work. im fair skinned and i get pretty dark. another alternative is what they call a hot lotion, i use it on my legs. what it does is open the pores and helps your skin take in the uv rays. be careful tho cuz it WILL turn your skin red and make sure to rub it in EVERYWHERE cuz otherwise youll have white spots. i dont advise using it on like arms or your tummy and stuff just legs and hard to tan spots. i use addicted to love, which is a mild hot lotion and it does burn...so start with a mild and if you think you can try a more harsh one, be my guest...but take things slow.
also make sure to exfoliate because otherwise youre just tanning dead skin that will fall off soon anyway. and moisturize AS MUCH AS YOU CAN because dry dead skin wont tan and will replace its self, again youre just wasting tanning time you paid for...hope that helps!

How safe is sun tanning and tanning beds and what is a good time to try?

I have very pale skin, and I'd like to be a little tan for the spring and summer and shorts-skirts-bikini weather.

How safe are tanning beds and natural tanning, and what should you do to make it any safer?

And what is a good time to spend tanning to just get a light natural tan (in beds and outside)?

Thank you!

They are compeltely HORRID for your skin. they increase your chance of getting skin cancer upto 40%. Use a fake tanner. the best is SunSilk. It comes for lighter or medium skin tones. i saw a difference within 2 days of applying it. it's also a daily lotion. :)

pale is pretty. im pale too and i like it. tanning beads are not safe at all!

NOT AT ALL! DONT DO IT. If you do tann do a spray on tan!

Dangers from the sun....skin cancer, and 90% of your skin's aging happens from the damage of the sun.

Best option is self-tanner and bronzers. Then sun block out in the natural light.

The one I use is Leg Apeel on the body and Secret Agent Tri-Color Bronzed Beauti for my face from BeautiControl. There is a self-tanner in the product line for the face as well. I just don't use it...but it is rated on sunless.com.

I have pale skin too,and I like it. Tanning beds are not safe. Try sunless tanning.

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you want a sunkissed look then use jergens natural glow...apply it everyday and it works

nope, neither natural nor artificial uv rays are good for u, but then again lots of things we enjoy are bad for us!!!

Pls dont, is bad for you skin. ( Tanning beds )Better way to tan is do spray taning, or used tanning lotions. Always used spf.when out in the sun

Just like tanning outside, tanning indoors damages your skin. That's because indoor tanning devices emit ultraviolet rays. Tanning occurs when the skin produces additional pigment (coloring) to protect itself against burn from ultraviolet rays. Overexposure to these rays can cause eye injury, premature wrinkling of the skin, and light-induced skin rashes, and can increase your chances of developing skin cancer. So the decision is yours just read this website and I hope it helps you!

How much time to spend tanning in the sun?

I have light, almost fair skin with a tendency to tan, then burn if overexposed. I want to start tanning in the sun but am not sure how much time to start with and how often. I have plenty of experience with this in a tanning salon, but I know the sun is very different from a tanning bed. I will be using a level 1 tanning lotion, and of course I want the best results, and a deep dark tan. Any help is appreciated, no lectures on skin cancer please.

natural sun and even tanning bed gives vitamin D... we need atleast 15 - 20 mins a few times a week of natural sun without sunscreen..

if i were u i would tan for 20 mins everyday... that way for sure u are not getting too much... and u get a gradual tan..

then for those days where u want to hit the beach.. u can use your spf 8 - 15

Well, the tanning bed is the BEST option. Get a tan there first and then take to the sun. You need a controlled environment.

wow did they just say that tanning bed is the best option hahahahahahahaha... yeah if you want skin cancer!

go out for 1 hr- maybe 1 1/2 lay on each side for 30-45 min

you have to ease into your tan u dont want to burn and peal

Yeah if your really fair take it easy. I would throw on and spf of 8 and spend 30 minutes on front and back, then if your gonna be out in the sun longer throw some spf 45 on. Even with the sunblock you will still get color. No sense in getting a bad burn then peeling it all off. Like anything moderation is the key!

Good luck!

You stated you have fair skin that does tan, but burns easily is overexposed. Do you already have a base tan form indoor tanning? If not, why don't you get your base tan indoors and then use a lotion with an SPF when you are outside? Maybe you could do 5 sessions indoors and then ease into tanning outside with an SPF 15, then SPF 8?

Have you ever heard of skin cancer? Perhaps not... lemme tell you you can get it trying to tan! Why I remember when i was a kid, we used to think tanning till you were red was cool, but then 3 kids in my class died of skin cancer... TSK TSK!

Apply lotion at least 20 minutes before. Watch this informational video on u tube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q87Draan-Y

Well a tanning bed is 8 times more powerful than the sun so it is much more dangerous!!! You should only spend a maxim of 20 Min's per day in a tanning bed or the sun. Also the most effective way to get the darkest tan is never to allow your self to burn. If you burn your skin will shed that layer and grow new skin so you will lose the tan if you burn. Oh yes a tanning bed does not supply any vitamin D because a tanning bed uses UVA rays and Vitamin D is found in UVB rays which come from the sun.

What is good way to tan for light to medium skin tone without going to a tanning bed? Lotion? Spary tan?

I have a event this weekend and i want a sunkissed tan but i dont want to go to a tanning bed. Is there a way to appear somewhat tanner without going to a tanning bed? Does the lotions work better the the spray? Is there one product that works better than others?

you should try the myst on tan.. they have it at most salons.. and usually at all tanning salons they have some sort of spray tan.. whether it be by machine or by hand.. there are profressionals that are working at salons waiting to help you, i'd try a salon.. i used to work at one.. thats why i suggest this... goodluck either way!! i'm sure you'll look beautiful either way!!

try the lotions i hear they work really good

i prefer the lotion over the spray. exfoliate all over, or atleast the parts that you can see outside of the clothes you'll be wearing. you should apply a good lotion so your skin isn't dry.

then apply the lotion. there are different kinds you can get ones that you put on a few times to get a tan as dark as you want, or one that you only apply once, but i dont like this one so much.
i like to put it on right after i put on lotion again. because it doesn't get all smeary/orange.

Everyone has their opinion, so I'll share mine. I too have fair skin. Start gradually. I use Loreal Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer for Fair Skins in the tube. This is a tinted lotion so don't freak out if it looks dark in the bottle. Its like this so you see where your putting it. First you have to exfoliate your entire body. you don't need a separate moisturizer. Use gloves cause it stains your hands and nails. Put it on carefully thin layer one section at a time n please take your time I learned that the hard way :) having a large mirror helped me especially on the back. you'll need to put it on every day till you reach your desired color. If you get dark spots, use a moisturizer to even it out. I use it 2 times a day! morning and 2 hrs before bed. It leaves a beautiful shimmery glow! not orange. Ull get lots of compliments. I still do :)

How to get the darkest tan in a tanning booth tips ?

I have relle pale skin.I dont burn easy but i turn red. I tan easy under the real sun like an half an hour on each side gets me a good quality tan.I need to know how to get the darkest tan in a tanning booth. And how much deos a session cost usaully? How long deos it take.

cancer aside.. here is my advice:

I would join somewhere that gives a one month unlimited membership. They are usually about $35 a month for a basic bed. Also, try and find a UVA bed, instead of a UVB bed. This will make burning less likely too.

Start out with very low times.. with a very mild lotion. (Swedish Beauty makes a good one) be sure and use sunscreen on your face.

Gradually increase your times... because you don't want to burn, or you will have to start all over again!

[[[[[[[[[edit]]]]]]]]]
I see someone suggested tingle lotion. Don't use this on sensitive/pale skin! The science of a tingle lotion is that it stimulates blood flow, to all the areas it is applied to, and makes tanning even more intense... I would HIGHLY suggest not using it on your skin.

Shake your body

Why would you want to be fake?

**totally depends on where you go.

Use spray on tan b/c tanning booths increase the risk of skin cancer and is VERY unhealthy, especially for ppl with pale skin.

Stay in the tanning booth longer, and ignore the skin cancer.

one word..
skin cancer, think about that..

r u from hawaaii or something its winter weirdo

roll around

Use dark tanning lotion, keep your skin moisturized and tan for a 10 minutes. Drink lots of water. You'll be dark by the end of the week.

It costs too much. Just go into a swimming pool with a lot of the chlorine.

You know you can get cancer from that right? It's no fun...my grandpa has cancer due to radiation exposure (from the a-bomb exercises not tanning booths LOL) and has cancer all over his body...the kemo is hell for him...do your body best and stay away from the radiation :)

k

stay in there for like 1 hour!

you'll be like toatally like crispy and like that is like so like hawt!!

i love you

Buy lotions at the salon...they'll help you find one. Good brands are Swedish Beauty, Designer Skin, and there's others. There something called a "tingle lotion" which you can put on your body (not face!) that stimualtes the skin, and makes it more vulnerable to the sun...therefore...you get darker.

Sessions don't last over 20 minutes due to law...but you can get stronger beds to make those 20 minutes mean more. The basics beds are called base beds, and after you're done with those, you can move up to premium beds.

For me, it's been $3-7 for a regular bed. Definitely get a package deal.

How long does it take to die from skin cancer? Well, that depends...

A bit of sun is good for us and useful in the production of Vitamin D. But if you're only concern is getting as dark as you can, then someone needs to sit you down and explain what happens to you when you get skin cancer.

ok what you need to do is do all your shaving and waxing 24hrs before then the night before you are having your tan done exfoliate well and moisteurise well then the day you are having your tan done dont use any moistueriser deoderant perfum or any skin products go and have your tan done wait til the following morning to have a shower then you find your tan is too light most salons do a discount rate on a next day top up make sure to have a trial on your tan before a big occasion

don't go tanning. besides causing cancer you'll like like a dried up old raisin in a few years if you do. try a mystic tan instead. or get a tanning lotion, those work really well, and they're quicker than tanning beds. there are so many other options out there to tanning beds, why would you want to put your health at risk??

It really varies depending on your area as to the cost. It could be anywhere from 5 to 20 dollars a session or more. If you get red, that's called burning. You should start out going in for half the maximum time limit, every other day. and if you don't turn red, you can move up one minute each session. If you turn red, stop for a couple of days, and when you go back, move down a minute in time. Use tanning lotion; it can be expensive but it's kind of like taking a shower without soap if you don't use it. You're just not going to get your money's worth for the tan time. Some people have to do this for only a couple of weeks and they will get tan. Other people take longer. Don't rush it. When you get a tan it usually only takes one visit a week to maintain it. Also, don't feel like you need to go for the full time limit to get tan. Most people actually don't, and doing so will only cause unnecessary damage.

i like the orbits bed the best, usually after about 3 sessions i am nicely tanned...if an half hour on each side outdoors gives you color than you should have no problem seeing results soon. I do the full 12 minute session and i also use a lotion that they often sell at the salons..it helps get a deeper tan sooner..i recommend it or at least moisturize with a body lotion. gd luck

Get a accumulative natural tan from the sun with SPF15-30 lotion. It's most healthy and you can stop whenever you want.

I use sugar Shack tanning lotion but you really just some until you find which you really like ......start at 10 and work yourself up to 20 but you have to stay consistent good luck!!

How do I keep my tan without using tanning lotions?

I got a really nice tan this summer and I don't want to have to keep tanning every weekend to keep it. What can I do so that it dosent go away so fast?
And I dont want to hear that tanning is bad blah blah blah
And no gradual tanning lotions or creams or sprays.

Well if your wanting to keep your tan throughout fall and winter, then only way is the tanning bed. And yes .. too much is damaging! :)

other than regular tanning or tanning lotions there is no way to keep your tan, it will fade as your skin cycles through and layers fall off.

Get in the sun every chance u get

well, i'm really white so something i do when we're driving in the car is i stick my arm out the window. sure, you sometimes get a funny tanline for doing that, but at least it gets you tan.

How to tan fast without a tanning bed and lighten blonde hair without dye?

Ok so I want to get a good tan and lighter blonde hair without having to go to the tanning salon, I usually lay outside. I do not want to dye my hair, but I heard about lemon juice and sun-in, but will it change it a few spots dramatically, cause I want it all only a couple of shades lighter (I have dirty-blonde hair) any suggestions, how-to's?

ok- you need to buy the shampoo/conditioner enhancers, I love the Pantene Expressions, that'll definately give you hightlights. Also, get a good tanning oil and sit out in the sun for a few days...that's it...it worked for me in March and I live in Canada.

For indoor tanning, what kind of tanning lotion is good for beginners who do not tan easily?

I have tried a regular tanning lotion, and a chocolate bronzer, and neither of them left me with any difference in skin. I started at 6, then went to 8 minutes, and I am thinking about going right to 12, because i haven't seen any difference or reaction with skin color or burning.

Switch lotions and try a higher intensity tanning bed. Preferably a high pressure tanning bed. It's more expensive, but the results are will be awesome. Also, your salon...it's possible that their bulbs are old, and the tanning bed you are going in may be a lower quality bed.

Go in a high pressure bed for a few minutes, maybe more depending on your skin type. Do about 3 or 4 sessions. After you do the high pressure bed, in couple of days do a Mystic Tan at level 2 to compliment your tan.

What are the best tanning products to use while going to a tanning bed?

I have trouble getting a tan, so i was wondering if there are any products that make it easier to get a tan while going to a tanning bed?

i like maui babe tanning lotion and australlian and european gold. oh and supre hemp! happy tanning
